"The Best Things" as written by and Richard Michael Patrick....
Got green light, got green light yeah
But I'm going no where
Got green light, got red light yeah
No cop, no stop I don't care

Everyone of you could be the same
Everyone of you could be play the game
Got green light, got green light yeah
But you're going no where

You know the best things in life aren't for me
You know the best things in life aren't for free

Got a new life, got a plight yeah
And it's going no where
Got a mountain top, like a pin drop yeah
No god, no food
I don't care

Everyone of you could be the same
Everyone of you can't play this game
Got a new life, got a plight yeah
And it's going no where

You know the best things in life aren't for me
You know the best things in life aren't for free

Got a new fun, got a new crime yeah
And it's going no where
Like a global pad, like car crash
And no cop, no stop he don't care

Everyone of you are just the same
Everyone of you will play this game
Got a new fun, got a new crime yeah
And it's going, no where

You know the best things in life aren't for me
You know the best things in life aren't for free
You know the best things in life aren't for me
You know the best things in life aren't for free

You know the best things in life aren't for me
You know the best things in life aren't for free

You know the best things in life aren't for me
You know the best things in life aren't for free

General CommentThe theme of stoplights seems to be a metaphor for going nowhere in life, and never achieving your goals. The best things in life seem to be way down the road, and your car is stalled.

General CommentGreat song with a trippy chorus chord progression. One of my faves.

I think its about a self-esteem or motivation-free instinct slave becoming aware of himself (yet doing nothing...). I say this from experience, being that I once had no motivation or self esteem (ah, middle and high school).

The instinct slave comes from the metaphor for breaking the law - "No cop, no stop, I don't care" - that comes from a lack of self value, as well as the "...no thought, I don't care" line. The law breaking could be in the metaphor of running a red light, or more than that, IE drug use, indiscriminate drinking, adrenaline thrills, etc. He's also Godless.

Possibly he's aware that he'll never change?

General Commenti think he realizes that nothing in the world REALLY REALLY matters... except what is free.... i.e. what god has given you - those are the best things in life - no material shit or no fake things - just natural happiness and beauty. . . no "coolness" factor involved.... no living up to anyones expectations (but his owns).... his ultimate goal is happiness and he realizes that happiness comes from within - hence "best things in life are for free". . . . its all about how he used to look for satisfaction in material assests and/or achievements but the TRUE & REAL happiness can ONLY come from no other place but himself!!!!! it applys to everyone. PEOPLE be happy with what god gave you and stop to smell the roses. youll find that true beauty lies within yourself

General CommentI can't believe no-one has commented on this song. Its a great song, one of my favourites. I think its about someone that has taken the wrong turn in life and is travelling down the wrong path. Hes saying it happens to the best of us and people learn from their mistakes.
