"Upside Down From Here" as written by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers....
From Antartica to the polar caps
Try to fit a big orb on a little flat map
I'm not going to drive this time
I love Greenland when it's Africa's size

North is not up
And east is not right
Except for Milwaukee Wisconsin that night

I know what it feels like to be upside down from here
Here is my arm and it waves like a flag that reminds me than I have two arms and a map.

From Antartica to the polar caps
Try to fit a big orb on a little flat map
I'm not going to drive this time
I love Greenland when it's Africa's size

North is not up
And east is not right
Except for Milwaukee Wisconsin that night
(so get a map and learn where you live at, learn where you live at, learn where you live at)

I know what it feels like to be upside down from here
I know what it feels like to be upside down from here

And if we met halfway in the middle of the planet, we'd just sit there and spin
Would that happen? can it!?

Here is my arm and it waves like a flag that reminds me that I have two arms and a map
I know what it feels like to be upside down from here
I know what it feels like to be upside down from here

General Commentim pretty sure this song is about being lost and how overwhelming the size of the planet can be when traveling. the whole arm and flag and map thing is the realization that he can just look at a map himself and atom also says to learn where you live at.

anyway. this is just a fun song.

i know what it feels like to upside down from here.

General Commentthis song isnt about stupid people who think north is up like yourself its about being lost and having to put a compass on top of the map which would be the big orb to figure out which direction you were going and figuring out which was you need to go

General CommentActually, it's based on a true story from when Atom was turing in Miluakee. This girl from the place he was tying to get to told him to go north, Asking which turn that was, she replied "duh, north is always up" I saw him live the summer of '01 and he told the stories behind lots of his songs, it was really interesting

General CommentI know this is an old song, but...

Whether or not there is a literal event behind the song, it is obviously about the overwhelming nature of distance and direction.

When I listen, as corny as it is, I feel like I'm tumbling around in space, completely without a sense of bearing or horizon. That is what it feels like when one travels a great deal-- a complete loss of one's bearing, horizon and home.

The metaphor is how different the size of the earth is on a map. In a trice you can trace your journey, but the distance is enormous and humbling.

General CommentHe's said that the song is specifically about people who think north is up, and how they are all going to hell. You can actually see that in the line "And if we met halfway in the middle of the planet" - I think this is a reference to them going to hell.
In addition to that its about stupid people who don't know how to read maps - that is, people who don't understand that a mercator projection distorts the size of the earth towards the poles.
