Choking on feelings I wish I could kill
And use your tears to fill
Holes inside me, bleeding again
As you walk away with an empty heart
I feel my world falling apart
When I think about you
Silent smile, but I know
That I'm still standing alone
With no hand to hold
I know that you have changed
But why do I feel the same?

(chorus)
I tried to see what you've become
You sent me home
I tried to be the one you loved
You left me cold...
(end chorus)

Scratching the tears I wish I couldn't cry
Depressed, I've already swallowed my pride
Sometime along the line I grew alone
But I know that there is a hand to hold
Still I stand alone
Waking up to my own screams
Suffocating on my own dreams
I know I cannot change
I still feel the same

(chorus)

(bridge)
I can't live with myself in the mirror
I wonder what it was like to be me
Crying bloody tears
Only living fears
I can't feel myself anymore
(end bridge)

(chorus 2x)

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
