"A Face In The Crowd" as written by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne....
Before all of this ever went down
In another place, another town
You were just a face in the crowd
You were just a face in the crowd
Out in the street walking around
A face in the crowd

Out of a dream, out of the sky
Into my heart, into my life

And you were just a face in the crowd
You were just a face in the crowd
Out in the street, thinking out loud
A face in the crowd

Out of a dream, out of the sky
Into my heart, into my life

And you were just a face in the crowd
You were just a face in the crowd
Out in the street, walking around
A face in the crowd
Face in the crowd
A face in the crowd
A face in the crowd

My InterpretationThis is one of my favourite love songs ever and to me it means exactly what it says - he fell in love with someone who once was just a face in a crowd, perhaps someone who came to watch them play.

'A Face in the crowd' was released in 1989, Full Moon Fever... And it makes me wonder if he had already fallen in love with Dana by then or whether he accidentally predicted his future.

    This, from Wikipedia:
"His first marriage, to Jane Benyo, lasted 22 years. He spent most of those years working, on the road or in the studio. They have two daughters. Adria is a film director and AnnaKim Violette an artist. Since 2001 he has been married to Dana York, whom he first met years earlier when she came to one of his concerts. They have a son named Dylan."

General CommentI take it to be about how random people can meet up. I guess it might be an unrequited kind of thing, based on the sound of the song. Maybe the guy saw somebody somewhere who really stodd out to him, and then he couldn't get her out of his mind, even though he never saw her again or never talked to her. I don't know, just a guess.

General CommentI love the way Petty paints love in this song. If you think about it everyone is just another face in the crowd, until we put a name, or a life to it. After that we'll always find that face unconciously. It is quite astounding that any of us ever find one another ... yet we're always bumping into one another at the same time.

General CommentIt's kind of an anti-love song, a successor to You Got Lucky and Don't Come Around Here No More. He's berating this chick, saying 'you were nothing without me and you'll be nothing when I'm gone.' Not very charitable, but still a great song.

General CommentIsn't it just as simple as how someone whom you might very well have passed in the street hundred of times can suddenly become a person with an identity when you start to fall in love with them?

General CommentBeautiful song, just about brings a tear to my eye every time.

Whenever I hear it I think of my girlfriend, and how before we met I could've seen her on the street a million times and never though anything of it because she was "just a face in the crowd", and now she's the most important thing in my life and the best thing that's ever happened to me.
