"More Than Words" as written by Nuno Bettencourt and Gary F. Cherone....
Saying I love you
Is not the words I want to hear from you
It's not that I want you
Not to say, but if you only knew
How easy it would be to show me how you feel
More than words is all you have to do to make it real
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
'Cause I'd already know
What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying I love you

More than words

Now that I've tried to talk to you and make you understand
All you have to do is close your eyes
And just reach out your hands and touch me
Hold me close don't ever let me go
More than words is all I ever needed you to show
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
'Cause I'd already know

What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying I love you

More than words

Song MeaningMany people claim that this song is about asking for sex. I guess that could be half right. The song is saying how the phrase "I love you" is overused to the point it no longer means anything, yet people still use it and think it will fix things or make their significant other feel loved. What the song is saying is "you say you love me, but you never show it". That doesn't necessarily mean sex. It could mean going out of your way to help or be there for them, a kiss on the cheek, a surprise visit at work, cuddling up on the couch, putting them before yourself. That's what they are trying to get at. Now could this also mean sex, but that's not the only thing that shows a guy/girl that you care.

MemoryEvery time I hear this song I think of a long-lost love of mine from 17 years ago! We had been dating for around five months or so and despite my strong feelings for him, I was worried that he didn't feel the same way (long story). I was trying so hard not to be all the things that I was that were detrimental in my former relationship: jealous, paranoid, possessive etc. that I was literally scared to death to tell this man that I love(d) him--yet I did. So, this song comes up on his TV one evening as we were sitting in his LR. He didn't turn the station and so this uncertain part of myself took this to mean that there was this possibility that he felt the same way about me too, that in his past as in mine, he'd heard the words too much but needed the actions that go along with them. Something happened over the next couple of months after that night and we ended up not seeing each other again. It was very painful for me. I didn't want to 'beg' so to speak. I wrote him a letter asking him to explain why he dropped off the face of the earth and never called me again but I never heard back. Needless to say, I can still get myself going about this even now when I'm in certain frames of mine. So, when I hear this song, I will always think of this person and how I didn't show him nearly enough how much he meant to me, that I loved him. Those reading this, don't let fear rule you. Do as the song says--act out the words and then say them when you are both ready and able to hear them.

Song MeaningThe song was described by Bettencourt as a song warning that the phrase "I love you" was becoming meaningless: "People use it so easily and so lightly that they think you can say that and fix everything, or you can say that and everything's OK. Sometimes you have to do more and you have to show it - there's other ways to say 'I love you.'"

General CommentI love this song very much, but I think we should stop and think about it for a moment. It is an incredible song, but what about the concept? I believe the idea of "more than words" is far greater. Do you know that feeling? Sometimes when you look into her [or his] eyes, both of you just know. That is much more of a commitment.

General Commenti think that it means you cant just say I love you and everything will be alright, you have to prove your love to someone and words can't do that by themselves. It's grabbing their hand when you can tell their nervous and telling them everythings all right, or just looking into their eyes without saying a word, letting your eyes do the talking,... but yeah I'm starting to get all cheesy so I'll stop now, but yeah great song.

General CommentSince the writers of More Than Words are purportedly "Christians", I doubt the song was written about a sexual conquest - although, that interpretation is certainly justifiable :)

To me, the Lover is simply telling the Beloved, "Actions Speak Louder Than Words!!!"

In my personal experience (I'm almost 40), if the relationship has gotten to the point where there is THAT much doubt, it's time to MOVE ON and not cross your fingers and hope the object of your affection will suddenly turn into a good catch.

So, although I LOVE the music and even learned how to play in on the guitar when it came out, the words (and unfortunately this is the case for most Extreme songs AND love songs in general) are whiney and pathetic crys from people who are afraid to end relationships for fear of being alone.

General CommentYou know, I just find this so sad that some people (won't mention names) are so horribly bitter that they connotate that even beautiful songs like this mean nothing more than "lie down and spread 'em." I mean, not everything in the world is about sex - the song is about actual 'LOVE,' which is something that goes beyond those couple hours that sex lasts - I think the meaning is that if you really love someone, you don't have to say it becuase your actions should speak for themselves, a kiss, a look in the eyes, mearly holding hands can be infinite times more fulfilling than having sex with someone IF you are really in love. Maybe some of the cynical persons that have commented on this should stop finding men who simply want sex and instead seek those that want love (and there are actually a lot of us like that) - your choice in partner eventually determines how the relationship will end. But enough from my soapbox - I just want to say that I think it is a beautiful song and wish some persons the best with their future, hoping they can overcome whatever emotional turmiol they may have or may face.

My OpinionIs this the only song people know them for? They have way better songs than this!

General Commentthat's exactly what he's saying... instead of just saying "i love you", he wants his partner (for lack of a better term) to not just say it but to show him how she feels.
