"Sleep to Dream Her" as written by David John Matthews and Glen Ballard....
I know I'll miss her later
Wish I could bend my love to hate her
Wish I could be her creator
To twist her arms now

She stares up at the stars when
The stars fell from her hair then
I bent down to collect them
And then she was gone

Oh, I sleep just to dream her
I beg the night just to see her
That my only love should be her
Just to lie in her arms

Oh, I came there to find out
Find out she'd made up her mind, oh
My arms are all tied up
To me she was blind

This space between us
Where wingless dreams fall earless
Will you not bear me witness
With your back to me now

It seemed so unnerving
Still somehow deserving
That she could hold my heart so tightly
And still not see me here, oh

Oh, I sleep just to dream her
Beg the night just to see her
That my only love should be her
Just to lie in her arms

I know I'll miss her later
Wish I could bend my love to hate her
Wish I could be her creator
To be the light in her eyes

General Commentaww, wow...I always wish someone would write pretty songs like this for/about me!! He just misses her so terribly, and knows he should get over her...but he can't. Familiar story :)

General CommentIt think that this song is this guy who is completly in love with this girl and she doesn't even apprieciate his love for her..."That she could hold my heart so tightly
And still not see me here, oh" This line explains it..that has to hurt...love someone so much, completely adore them and have them just see right through you...Dave's Lyrics are almost always so compelling...like the line Wish i couls bend my love to hate her...He says so much through his words.

General Commentafter a family member's suicide, which left us all completely bereft and without any foreseeable closure (no note, no indication as to why she did it), i see this song in a whole new light, though not taking away from the validity and soundness of others' interpretations.

i see the protagonist of the song alternating between anger, despair and sadness at the loss of this person...sleep just to dream someone who is not alive anymore...in dreams you can see her, catch a glimpse of what she was like when within reach, when alive.

also, "wish i could be her creator, to twist her arms now" sounds a lot like the thought of a loved one left behind by someone who took her life by her own hand and the protagonist wishes that she had the power to prevent/control the person to alter the outcome of events...

"the stars fell from her hair then, i bent down to collect them, and then she was gone"...this is a haunting line for me. i think this is symbolic of the actual death of the person...and also references the heavens (i.e., the stars), a look towards the sky, and the actual looking forward to the time she will kill herself and become a part of the cosmos in a different form. others around her are completely oblivious to what she is thinking as evidenced by the line "i came to find out, find out she made up her mind, oh" -- a complete surprise when she is discovered and realization hits that she killed herself and all the angst and misery that must've preceded that.

by the time the dust settles, the suicide is completed, the person who happens upon her just sees a lifeless form, no longer a person who exists, as symbolized by the "stars fell from her hair then."

any feedback on this interpretation would be great. i don't know if my life experience is making me over-analyze, but it really hit me how this song's lyrics seem to fit this interpretation, at least for me.

one last thing: dave's painfully wistful tone as he sings indicates a loss of a sort that cuts him to the core. unrequited love and death of a love one, especially by a suicide, make sense in light of that tone...

General CommentHOLLY CRAP EVITA! Your words are exactly like the situation Im in. The love of my life dumped me for no good reason, even though she knew I would die for her. This was months ago and I still cant get over it. Id go into a lil more detail but Id be here for hours telling you all my story.

    General CommentEvita-
I think your absolutely right. The words to this song are just so powerful. I was drawn to it when I was in a similar situation, and it just helped me express what I thought.

General CommentThis song is a song I think most people can relate to. At least I can:) Most people have felt like this at some point. Not to long ago this guy I had a thing with just rejected me, and this song kinda explains the same feelings I had/have... Anyway, I think this is one of the easier DMB songs to understand.

General CommentI think this song is just amazing. I mean, "sleep just to dream her" even that little line says soooo much. I think that is such an amazing lyric. The song is beautiful and I love it.

General CommentHe received love from this woman, who still torments him. But, I don't think she returned it in the degree he gave it to her, possibly an un-matchable extent. It is possible that she underestimated his feelings, obviously endless, as she 'held his heart so tightly', yet still 'did not know that he was there' , i take it as she didn't see just what he felt. And, 'I beg the night just to see her......just to lie in her arms'. He just wants to be with her, in her arms. I know exactly how he feels. :(
