Sometimes I can't think of anything to say
So I thought I'd write this song
It doesn't say hardly anything at all
So if you want to you can sing along
I won't get pissed, just for one song
We'll call it a truce, just for this song
So do us a favor and get up and dance
And we'll set the world right on Saturday night

Sometimes it's cartoon time anyway
If the worlds gonna end, it's gonna have to wait
There ain't nothin wrong that you can't get right
If you dance until you fall down on the living room floor

We all know we're on the edge of madness
So I thought I'd write this song
But right now we'd all rather have some fun
So ignore me while I sing this song
Indulge me as I sing how nothing matters but you
And next week I'll sing you a political song
But right now we'd all rather have some fun
So dance with me now and I'll set you on fire

Sometimes it's cartoon time anyway
If the worlds gonna end, it's gonna have to wait
There ain't nothin wrong that you can't get right
If you dance until you fall down on the living room floor

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
