In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Johnny, take a walk
With your sister the moon
Let her pale light in
To fill up your room
You've been living underground
Eating from a can
You've been running away
From what you don't understand
Love
She's slippy
You're sliding down
She'll be there when you hit the ground
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways, oh
Johnny, take a dive
With your sister in the rain
Let her talk about the things
You can't explain
To touch is to heal
To hurt is to steal
If you wanna kiss the sky
Better learn how to kneel (on your knees boy)
She's the wave
She turns the tide
She sees the man inside the child, yeah
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways, oh
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It's alright, it's alright, alright
Lift my days, light up my nights, oh
One day you'll look back and you'll see
Where you were held now by this love
While you could stand there
You could move on this moment
Follow this feeling
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
She moves in mysterious ways, oh
Move you, spirits move
Yeah, move
Lets you move you
Does it move you?
She moves with it
Lift my days, light up my nights, oh
With your sister the moon
Let her pale light in
To fill up your room
You've been living underground
Eating from a can
You've been running away
From what you don't understand
Love
She's slippy
You're sliding down
She'll be there when you hit the ground
It's alright, it's alright, it's alright

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
Plastic Bag

Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
I think its about the "Moon Goddess" and her son "The God of the Harvest" Its only my opinion based on some research I have done on different religons. Hold on to your bibles folks......
The moon Goddess (Diana) and her son, who was also her lover, The Horned God of the Harvest (Pan)
Johnny take a walk with your sister the moon Let her pale light in to light up your room you've been living underground, eating from a can, running away from what you don't understand, love
(Diana must enlighten Pan and make him understand what his purpose is on earth, to bring forth the harvest)
Shes slippey, your sliding down, she'll be there when you hit the ground. Its alright, Its alright, Its alright. She moves in mysterious ways.
(Diana gives birth to pan and guides him on the earth.)
Johnny take a dive with your sister in the rain let her talk about things you can't explain To touch is to heal To hurt is to steal If you want to kiss the sky you better learn how to kneel On your knees boy.
(Diana explains to Pan what is expected of him on earth, she touches him to heal his lonely heart, in return he is expected to obey by brining forth the harvest on earth, to disobey her would be like stealing from her the purpose of her giving birth to him. To please her and not hurt her he must obey her and follow his destany)
Shes the wave She turns the tide She sees the man inside the child
(The motions of the moon affect the ocean waves and tides here on earth, She shows him her power. She knows his purpose on earth)
Lift my days, light up my nights
(She guides him to fulfill his purpose. To bring forth the harvest.)
One day you will look back.... yada, yada
(Pan will come to realize why he was put on the earth and understand Dianas power)
we move through miracle days. spirit moves in mysterious ways
(Life is her gift and a miracle, someday we will also realize our purpose here on earth)

What a wonderful interpretation! I love it, my first thought was also a reference to the Goddess. I think the song is maybe a little more metaphorical than that, where the Goddess is a woman, or woman is a metaphor for the Divine Feminine - indicated most blatantly by the line "she moves in mysterious ways" (a play on the old Christian phrase "The Lord works in mysterious ways", which is a reference that a much wider modern audience might understand); I don't think it needs to be about a specific mythology, but I definitely think that a man's love for a woman is being compared to a man's worship of the Goddess. Great call!

And don't worry so much about what Christians think, if they have a problem with it, that's THEIR problem; there is no crime in finding beauty in Pagan imagery ~ in fact, some would say its only natural. ;) Music transcends religion, it has a sanctity all its own; if people let their dogma get in the way of that, then they are the ones missing the point! =)
you do know that Diana - goddess of the moon and the hunt was a virginal goddess, right?
