I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
I walk the maze of moments
But everywhere I turn to
Begins a new beginning
But never finds a finish
I walk to the horizon
And there I find another
It all seems so surprising
And then I find that I know
You go there, you're gone forever
I go there, I'll lose my way
If we stay here, we're not together
Anywhere is
The moon upon the ocean
Is swept around in motion
But without ever knowing
The reason for it's flowing
In motion on the ocean
The moon still keeps on moving
The waves still keep on waving
And I still keep on going
You go there, you're gone forever
I go there, I'll lose my way
If we stay here, we're not together
Anywhere is
I wonder if the stars sign
The life that is to be mine
And would they let their light shine
Enough for me to follow?
I look up to the heavens
But night has clouded over
No spark of constellation
No Vela no Orion
The shells upon the warm sands
Have taken from their own lands
The echo of their story
But all I hear are low sounds
As pillow words are weaving
And willow waves are leaving
But should I be believing
That I am only dreaming?
You go there, you're gone forever
I go there, I'll lose my way
If we stay here, we're not together
Anywhere is
To leave the tread of all time
And let it make a dark line
In hopes that I can still find
The way back to the moment
I took the turn and turned to
Begin a new beginning
Still looking for the answer
I cannot find the finish
It's either this or that way
It's one way or the other
It should be one direction
It could be on reflection
The turn I have just taken
The turn that I was making
I might be just beginning
I might be near the end
But everywhere I turn to
Begins a new beginning
But never finds a finish
I walk to the horizon
And there I find another
It all seems so surprising
And then I find that I know
You go there, you're gone forever
I go there, I'll lose my way
If we stay here, we're not together
Anywhere is
The moon upon the ocean

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
I was such a huge, huge, HUGE Enya fan back in my hippie days. This was the first Enya song I heard after like, Orinoco Flow, I saw it on Rosie O'Donnell and was MESMERIZED! I still have every Enya CD made up until about '99 in a drawer. Now I'm feeling inspired to get them out and listen. I would venture to say that Enya has made me a better person. I think going through my "Enya-phase" definitely made me more easy-going, more understaning of people, less quick to judge or to throw a tantrum. The music just emits serenity. Plus, the multilingual, multitalented, funkily-dressing Enya is a good role model for a young girl to have. I sound like a teeny-bopper professing her love for Britney Spears, but I'm serious. Deep in the soul of this current Rock and Roller lies the deep impact of ENYA.
I think the chorus describes her dilemma:
"You go there you're gone forever I go there I'll lose my way if we stay here we're not together Anywhere is"
Assuming that there are 2 people at a current place, and if "you" go there, the outcome is undesirable (to be gone forever), if "i" go there, the outcome is also undesirable (losing her way). But yet, they cannot both stay as well, because they have to move on with life, as sung "I still keep on going".
Anywhere is the same, always faced with such a dilemma.
Right on! I can seriously say Enya has changed my life. She is so amazing!
This was the very first song I heard from Enya - my stepsister was playing it. I went out and bought the cd the next day and have loved Enya ever since. Like BtownMeggy said, she's an incredible artist and the kind of woman that young girls ought to look up to. The makers of the Lord of the Rings movies even enlisted her!
i cant nod in a message so i'n not gonna try :)
Enya is amazing! She brings me to a spiritual place. her voice is so harmonious and full of grace. I feel enlightment when I listen to her music!
Her tones are so hard to match! This is one of her best songs in my opinion. She has some of the most beautiful lyrics i have ever heard!
I think this song is about being stuck in a moment and wondering what you're leaving behind, sacrificing, by moving on. But the conclusion drawn is that the moment this person is in is meaningless, it's just about remembering, not making new memories. And in that moment, that person is alone, and without the things they remember loving so much. They know that by leaving the past behind they can never get it back, but any moment is better than the one that person is in, because they don't have anything. But that also means they don't have anything or lose.
Yay I'm still in my enya-worshipping phase ^_^ Along with Capercaillie, I think I have heard Enya from even before birth so she makes me feel safe.
As for meaning boomlily seems to have got it ^_^
A very spiritual song
