@[myriadicity:22198] @[johnny3070:22199] Yeah, I only don't care too much for Up and Around the Sun myself. But I like everything up to Automatic for the People the most. I mean I am a fan of all their stuff mostly but their biggest hit is my second favorite song Losing My Religion. Fall On Me is my favroite. And XTC is in my top 3-4 fav bands as well and "No Language in Our Lungs" is in my top 5 fav songs which has a very similar subject to Losing My Religion. For XTC I like most their stuff as well, I am not extremely into Nonsuch or the side project Dukes of Stratosphere but I even like White Music and Go2. And much like REM they explore more than one genre. From the more 70s pop rock/alternative sound of Drums and Wires to the more Beatle-ish Mummer I like it all much like I like Don't Go Back to Rockville and Whats the Frequency Kenneth? which are nothing a like in sound pretty much. |

I love this song. I believe this was written from a women's point of view, stuck inside looking after the kids while the husband is away with the boys. Then it seems to shift towards the male point of view. There are two characters in this song, both constrained by their dull lives but freed by their imaginations. Brilliant. |

I think this song is about a breakup. The first verse is about a women the narrator loves breaking up with him on a ferris wheel: "Not tonight, not tonight" and the feeling of being on fire from the heartache and feeling out of body where he can only sense the weight of the wires and hear the cracking electricity. This verse ends thinking back to before there were problems in the relationship. Whatever the problems were, they were even once "fine about it." Clearly that's not the case anymore. Regardless of his feelings of pain, the ferris wheel keeps spinning: time moves on even when we are in pain. The verse about them not coming through is about the hopes and expectations he had for the relationship. He doesn't want to be like other lovers that gave up and didn't work out their problems. "Broken heroes" is a nod to the line in Born to Run but these broken heroes are now drinking to their past rather than being on a last chance power drive. They are doing nothing. The narrator doesn't want to give up. This verse also ends noting that the ferris wheel is still on: again this is a metaphor for time as an indifferent force passing by. After his girl leaves him, he was left alone in the rain. I wouldn't be surprised if this part is true because of its heavy use in the song and given the odd, but poetic wording. An old man saying, "Maybe you should call yourself an ambulance" is a line someone would remember. The narrator (or Brian) looked so hurt from the breakup standing in the rain someone actually said this. The "strange" feeling is shock from someone you love leaving you. While standing there in shock he thinks of advice his mother, and others, gave him. That advice is open to interpretation. The song ends thinking back on the memories that made him love the woman. |

| I believe I gathered the same thing about the song as you did. Oddly, I was able to compare the song to my own life some years ago.... I had a friend that was like a brother to me and he saw me about a year after my addiction had started but now it was worse of course. And I was clenching 20 dollars (2 rolls of quarters) in my hand tighter then a punching fist. My friend was naturally confused why I would just let this addiction consume me when I was somewhat of a promising artist and perhaps had a future. But I would just continue down this path and every day put my crummy stocking hat on and go and cop my junk. I didn't shower for about 6 months and my only possession was an old trusty pocket knife. Records, stereo, guitars all long gone by now. This would all continue for 3 more years until I finally let my family into my life again and began to turn it all around..11 years later I'm going strong and I very much enjoy the images and light that every morning brings me. | |

He wants to cry because he gave all his love to her, and he loved her more than he loved himself. The steel, the copper, the blood, all that imagery, to me, just sort of goes with such a narrative. And then the "You told me last night You were a sun now with your very own Devoted satellite Happy for you And I am sure that I hate you Two sons too many too many able fires" Like....she's found out her abusive ex partner has a child...a "son" of his own...if you read the pun and...an "able fire"...an heir, if you will.
