I agree with Marx on this one because if you look at the past, it shows that organized religion and especially the church have done nothing but hold back the development of mankind...look at the middle ages, everyone was terrified of god and the church used that to their advantage, taxing people for no apparent reason other than that god said so, and controlling every aspect of their lives, basically making personal decisions for people
because of that people were afraid to make decisions for themselves, to question authority, to be daring and explore the possibilities of life...why do you think those times were called the dark ages and the period afterwards when art and the worth of a person were valued again was called The Renaissance or the re-birth?
organized religion acts as an opiate or a powerful drug because once a person gets hooked on it, its hard to go back...the people become numbers, statistics, just tiny pieces of a larger puzzle instead of maintaining their uniqueness and each one being valued for his/her contribution to the world...its an opiate because there is no other force that can be used to control large numbers of people as religion and the threat of answering to the greatest authority there is: god

ok, this might be going out on a limb here but its the way I interpret this song:
in the first verse the singer describes how he fell in love with this girl who was a punk and independent from everyone and never listened to anyone...now he's obviously feeling sad and guilty because he describes an abortion they had and a wedding that never happened...but he's also trying to take the blame off himself and put it on her, saying how it was her fault for falling in love
in the second verse it's being said that the singer's best friend took some time off from his relationship with "her"...now who could that "her" be? how about the same girl who the singer was also in love with...
the way I see it, the girl was in a relationship with the singer's best friend but she felt he was never compassionate enough for her (the line "thinks about her now and how he never really wept, he says")...so the girl instead falls in love with the singer and they have a child, and she wants to get married....but the singer is young and doesn't want that sort of commitment so he forces her to have an abortion and tells her he doesn't want to be married...
now the best friend finds out that she was cheating on him with his best friend, so he leaves her, having himself an extended bachelor party of sorts...depressed that now she has ruined everything around herself, the girl commits suicide by taking pills
now both men are crying because the guilt is on them and both are responsible for the girl's death...one never cared for her feelings, the other was too afraid of his future with her...add to that the fact that they were best friends who were in love with the same girl and you have even more feelings of regret from both of them
now both of them remember how they never tried to talk things out between them and their lacking relationship ever since that girl drove them apart from eachother...they were both too proud to work out a compromise between them, and that has led them both to "dying for their sins", not actually dying, but dying emotionally...
still both of them try to deny their responsibility for this, but both know that really while they tried not to slip on the ice (make some little mistake), they fell through it (made huge mistakes) and that is what's killing them |

this is one of the coolest songs ever written...I think its about a guy who wakes up one day and decides to change his life, only instead of becoming a better person he decides on doing whatever he feels like, not caring about what is right or wrong (stealing from the poor and giving to the rich, executing people, torturing them)...he realizes that he isn't special at all and that everyone around him is a pig so he might as well join them and become corrupt like everyone else, that he isn't any more perfect than anyone else so he's a liar too...this is his day to try living his life the way he REALLY wants to, not the way he's forced to |

the video also has a lot of clues as to what the song is about...the little doll with no legs represents a child who is powerless to defend himself against the abuser, when in the beginning the figure takes away the doll's legs, making it unable to escape
near the end when he is being painted he raises his hand but the figure just calmly holds it down, and then caresses the doll like a little child...its calming the doll down, saying this will be over soon
the whole paintbrush part, when the figure paints the doll there is no mark left meaning to the figure this is something that has little significance to, it is just another almost daily ritual...when the doll paints itself there is a black streak, meaning he is scarred for life from this
in the end you see that the doll is kept in a box by the abuser, meaning the abuser will most likely repeat his actions again and again since he keeps the doll as a pet
