Queen – The Show Must Go On Lyrics 22 years ago
This is one of the most frighteningly honest songs I have ever encountered. Freddie is almost defiant in his acceptance of his fate, but in true Queen style, he infuses it with his love for all things theatrical. Social comment, regret, acceptance and optimism: this song manages to balance it all. A fitting tribute to one of the world's best lead singers.

John Denver – Annie's Song Lyrics 22 years ago
Now this is what you call a love song! Simple and to the point, few songs can match it. Denver's genius can never be doubted because of this.

John Denver – Rocky Mountain High Lyrics 22 years ago
A love song about nature that has genuine feeling behind it. Enough said!

Bob Dylan – You're a Big Girl Now Lyrics 22 years ago
He could just have easily called this song regret, because you can feel his regret throughout this. A mistake has been made, and now Dylan wants her back. He seems almost as if he is pleading to have her back, but he seems to know that he has blown it. "It's a price I have to pay," he concedes towards the end. And I'm sure anyone who has been hurt in love can relate to "a pain that stops and starts, like a corkscrew to my heart." Dylan is a great lyricist because he has a great understanding of human nature. Lesser songwriters would not observe that the pain of love can stop and start, but Dylan has. And you can't help but feel for him here. Blood on the Tracks is perhaps his most honest body of work, and this song is the standout track.

Simon and Garfunkel – Kathy's Song Lyrics 22 years ago
Paul Simon apparently wrote this about a woman he met while touring England. As love songs go, it is one of the best. More specifically, it is written for someone, just like George Harrison's "Something" and John Denver's "Annie's Song." Whoever Kathy is, she can be proud that Simon regards her as the "only truth" he knows. It is possibly the most profoud lines ever sung, in my opinion.

Elton John – Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters Lyrics 22 years ago
I especially like the line "You stand at the edge and people run you through." It sums up the hectic movement of people in any big city, expecially New York. No one has time for anyone else because they are all going about their own business. People do literally pass through you on a busy city street!

Elton John – Original Sin Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is interesting in the respect that it has contrasting images of heaven and hell in what is essentially a love song. For example, "paper angels" and "little devils." Also, notice the "furnace wind" and the more benign image of incense. I think he is singing about a love that he cannot help, but that he knows is wrong.

Elton John – Someone Saved My Life Tonight Lyrics 22 years ago
People always mention Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" as being one of the most hateful outpourings commited to record, but I think this ranks up there with that. This is a really nasty lyric targeted at a woman Elton was due to marry. A close friend, the "Sugar Bear" of the song, convinced him not to. Despite it's cutting harshness, the song maintains optimism and beauty. I am especially taken with the line about the woman being a "slip noose in his darkest dreams." This is some of the darkest imagery I have ever heard, and it conveys his feelings perfectly.
