The Rocket Summer – Never Knew Lyrics

Wow is this song ever open for interpretation. I actually thought of it as turning away from God and Christiantiy. See, I am gay. And for me, what the people "never really knew" is who gay people actually are - and not what Christians make them out to be.
Religious people claim that they have me "all so figured out".. but I know first hand that 'none of it's true' cause they never really knew me.
For me, then, the song is more about a Christian finding out who I really am, and now knowing that what they were taught - none of it's true. |

Fugees – Killing Me Softly Lyrics

penny-lane has almost gotten it. The song is indeed about a moving performace at a Don McLean concert. Although the tune was made popular by Roberta Flack, it was actually written and first performed by a woman named Lori Lieberman:

The "song" that she is referring to is Empty Chairs. Give it a listen; it is actually a very moving composition by one of the most under-appreciated American writer-performers of our time. |

Don McLean – Circus Song Lyrics

Damn. Is there anything this man can't do?!
I love the simplicity of this song. This song would actually be so hard to play but he makes it sound so easy! I think he's commenting on how mainstream professional society is all an act and lacks authenticity. It's a joke - a giant circus. |

Don McLean – Empty Chairs Lyrics

I'm pretty sure it's about an unexpected breakup. He seems to be naive to the fact that she was giving him all the signs but, ultimately, he didn't know what he had till it was gone!
FYI - Ever heard that song "Killing Me Softly With His Song"? Yeah. The "song" that is spoken of, it's this one! Empty Chairs! And the "his" is Don McLean's! |

Wow. Don McLean is a hippie! And I love it! Such awesome poetry written into song. This, as with most of his songs, the music is only scenery, it's all in the lyrics!! |

Buddy Holly – That'll Be The Day Lyrics

You know, it wasn't until I really got into Don McLean and his American Pie that I sumpbled upon this song. Actually maybe that's not entirely true. I'm a 22 year old male and somehow grew fond of Linda Ronstadt over the last few months .. I don't know how it's possible either.
Anyways, I'm going to have to say that I actually enjoy her version a lot better. Something about a girl singing it that adds more meaning to it. I'm not old fashion or anything. But, really, I'd assume during the days that this song was actually written, women needed a man much more than the other way around. If the man actually did leave, there would be more chance of her dying than the other way around. She needed the financial support of a man. While I in no way concone this opinion and see it as very old fashioned, I do think it is more fitting to be sung by a woman (even when Linda Rontadt sung it in the early 70s). |

Midtown – No Place Feels Like Home Lyrics

this song is by no means Midtown's catchiest, but is by all means their best. if you know what i mean. the message is strong but it isn't delivered in a way that would make it stick in your head. still, the lyrics are what makes a song the 'best'. i've heard they've changed their style. i sure hope not! |
