I've always loved this song, my parents played it all the time, but it has a completely different meaning to me now. Back in 2002 my friend died and her boyfriend who she was going to marry and had known since she was 2 played this at the funeral for her. Takes on a whole new meaning doesn't it? |

When I was a Junior in high school my friend downloaded this version of slow motion and we used to listen to it on his MD player in the back of class, convinced that if we ever got caught we would get busted for listening to such a crazy song. but here is the real crazy thing. There was a teacher at my high school, who taught english named miss jones, and she had taught there for a long time, and remembered a student she had back in the day named Stephan Jenkins. How's that for weird?! (now she doesn't have a son but I'm thinking Stephan didn't really shoot anyone either) does anyone know where jenkins grew up? I know they're from SF but is that where they always lived? |

I can't believe there are no comments on these songs! Did anyone know that this song was written by Charles Manson?! No joke. He lived with Dennis Wilson for a while and wrote songs and pestered the beach boys until they actually used this song (the title and a few words were changed) Dennis Wilson eventually became so scared of Manson living in his home that he just left his house and bought a new one. ( must be great to be that rich) |

my friend who was the same age as me (19 at the time) died a few months ago and I remember driving to the hospital to see her before she passed away and hearing the lyrics to this song. It really got to me, just the fact that i was driving to the hospital alone made me feel strangely grown up, but not in a good way. ("Everybody knows it hurts to grow up, And everybody does.") I saw a lot of old friends at the hospital ("It's so weird to be back here") Everyone was sort of freaked out because the mortality of a person your age sort of makes you realize that you can't fight growing up("Let me tell you what. The years go on and we're still fighting it, we're still fighting it ") but most of all what really got me was that my friend was so similar to me, and she died ("And you're so much like me, I'm sorry.") So needless to say, this song really means something to me. I think that since he wrote it for his son he's basically just talking about life, and I guess thats why it fit what was going on in my life so well.

ok...so...umm...back to the music. This song is great for playing loud and screaming to. the line "your hair is everywhere, screaming infidelities" always gets me. i had a relationship with a guy who had dark hair and whenever he'd be in my bed there would be black hair on my white sheets and we used to joke that he wouldnt be good at sneaking around because everyone would find his hair. yeah well, his hair WAS everywhere. at least chris can relate. |

OK! here is my story! I have always liked the song, the original version...when I was in high school my boyfriend and I used to run the dance show productions at the school and a dancer danced to this version of the song...he picked up on the fact that I liked it. So, last year when he was preparing to leave and live in another country for 2 years, he wrote out the lyrics to this and gave it to me the night we said goodbye. I plan to play it at my wedding. I have always been told that this song is about Camarillo State hospital (a mental hospital) where a lot of famous hollywood types had stayed at. camarillo is between LA and Santa Barbara. It is closed now, but that place was freaking spooky. I know for a fact that the picture on the front of the album is camarillo. Someone mentioned it had to do with james taylors girlfriend, and she had stayed at this mental hospital before she killed herself (fire and rain is written about her) has anyone else ever heard about this idea? The song has always freaked me out because i had a cousin that killed herself back in like the 70's in that place, makes it a lot spookier. Oh and also I just have to say this song has always reminded me of the movie "The Shining" (before anyone gets angry, that does not mean i think the song is about the shining.) ok thats all, just wondering if anyone else has heard about the mental hospital topic. |

When this song first came out I remember the band talking about how it was a metaphor for graduation....the bar closing was like high school coming to an end. I'm not exactly sure what they said, but it had to do with graduation, and definitely not about pregnancy. But i guess thats the cool thing about poetry and lyrics, you can make them mean whatever you want. |

My friend died a few months ago and at the funeral they handed out papers with the schedule of the services and the lyrics to this song, written out by the boyfriend she had from the time we were sophomores in high school until her death when we were sophomores in college. I have to admit I was never into Smashing Pumpkins (though my friend and her boyfriend were totally obsessed) but after reading the lyrics to this song, I can at least appreciate the amazing lyrical talent that Billy Corgan has. Though I'm sure the song wasn't meant to be about a loved one's death, it sure did fit, especially the lines "a pure soul, and beautiful. you don't understand, don't hear me now. i will breath for the both of us. travel the world, traverse the skies. your home is here, within my heart." I know that listening to the songs has given a lot of my friends comfort, because it reminds us of our friend that passed away, and any song writer that has that power is awesome in my opinion

"a song for a heart so big, God wouldn't let it live" this song gets me, especially this lyric....a friend of mine died a few months ago, she was only 19 and she died of a cardiac arrest...at the funeral her mom (who is a doctor) said that they couldn't find a medical reason why her heart stopped, but that she had a feeling that God realized what a cool kid he had created, and wanted her back in Heaven with him. so the lyrics really mean something to me. awesome song too. |

okay, I won't say this is in the top 10 best songs ever category, but I WILL say that it is one of my favorite love songs, because it is neither cheesy nor mushy....the lines "And I wonder when I sing along with you, if everything could ever feel this real forever. If anything could ever be this good again. The only thing I'll ever ask of you Gotta promise not to stop when I say when" makes me think of those moments when you're with a boyfriend (or girlfriend) and you stop and realize that everything is just so perfect and you're so happy, and you hope that it can stay that way forever. |

ok so here's my story...I saw dashboard in concert on march 7th and heard this song for the first time. loved it. bought the cd...listened to the song so much that within a few months i had lived it out. hahhaa, just keep listening to it, worked for me. someone said it was about having sex at a party but i don't think they actually had sex. the line "these hearts they race, from self control" makes me think that, as well as "we're doing fine, we're doing nothing at all" i think that they were just snuggling with each other and since he had wanted her so much he was pretty excited. also, during the whole song he's wishing she'd kiss him, and no kiss is mentioned until the end of the song, when he takes her home. If they were having sex i don't think he would have been so stoked about a kiss. |

ok so maybe this song is generic and maybe its cheesy like an 80s song (ah hem JHL) but I like it! haha. I saw it sung live and it was really cool. The line "it's too jimmy eat world and those nights in my car" caught my attention because my best friend that i also had a huge crush on all throughout highschool and the first year of college is away in another country for 2 years and the last night we hung out before he left we sat parked in front of his house in my car with jimmy eat world playing. thats the only part that i can directly relate to, but still, an awesome song, with some pretty cool lyrics. and, by the way, if you hate a song so much why would you look it up and then write so much about it? |

I think that this song is about the girl on the road, maybe a wife, but it seems to me that its more about a girl with him on the road...she knows the words to the songs (The words she knows, the tune she hums) "count the headlights on the highway" makes me think of them on the tour bus late at night. the line "seamstress for the band" is what really tipped me off that this isn't a wife but more just someone along for the tour. as for the lines "Jesus freaks out in the street Handing tickets out for God Turning back she just laughs The boulevard is not that bad" I think thats talking about the people that stand around on street corners in Hollywood, giving fliers to people advertising their various religious groups (handing tickets out for God) A lot of people are worried about walking around the Blvd because of this and the other people, but she just smiles and laughs.
