The Who – Tea & Theatre Lyrics 17 years ago
This song makes me think of the two dead Who's: Keith Moon and John Entwistle...I think that's why they use a drum machine and very little bass in the song.
It's quite emotional when you consider those two people: Keith Moon was the theatre; flailing around, actring out all the time, being Crazy. John was definitely the Tea, just there, as if to say "Right, i'll just be back here with a cuppa tea, chilling out.

Pete wrote a beautiful song for his dead friends.

I think of it like a story, could you imagine reading a book and loving it, and meeting an amazing person who turns out to be the author of that book...

The Who – Relay Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song was originally part of the Lifehouse project...it was going to have a double album (Like Tommy) along with what could best be described as a "multi-media" presentation...anyway, the Lifehouse was about a future where everyone wears "experience suits" and lives life in Virtual reality, at some point someone wakes up and realizes that music can set people free to live in reality again...through the "Grid" that everyone is plugged into, a secret rock concert is performed, with the population of the world participating. at the height of this concert, a universal single note is played, unifying everyone and waking them into reality.
Relay may have been a song that signified word getting out around the Grid about the coming Concert.

The Who – The Acid Queen Lyrics 17 years ago
I stick by the Prostitute interpretation. In the album, the Hawker is a pimp. He does a good job selling her sexuality (she's so hot, a word from her lips and baby, the deaf begin to hear) so Tommys Dad takes him to a the prostitute and she deflowers him...Here's a key verse:
"My work is done now look at him
He's never been more alive.
His head it shakes his fingers clutch.
Watch his body writhe"

I interpret that as Tommy, by this time a teenager, having an Oragasm.

I think he's a teenager, by the way, because we have already heard childhood in "Christmas" and "Cousin Kevin"
There could be a little of "Dad wants to get someone so Tommy can become a "man"" stuff here

The Who – 1921 Lyrics 17 years ago
oh, another point on this song, very important: The husband walks in, Kills boyfirend, they realize Tommy had seen it and say "you didn't hear it, you didn't see it..." etc. if you notice on the album, the lyrics are echoed, this is Tommy seeing the murder through the mirror, and because of the trauma, the mirror is his gateway into being the deaf, dumb and blind boy as the shattering of the mirror will be his awakening out of that state later.

The Who – 1921 Lyrics 17 years ago
Where to begin? the album is one of the gratest, true. There is a lot of Auto-biography from Pete here, like in most of his songs, because he writes from experience. The autobiographical bomb-shell for Pete himself was the abuse subject in the album (he had not come to terms with his abuse as a child at the time this album was written.
The movie needs to e watched a few times to be appreciated, after the first viewing I was disgusted, only because I expected the album on film...
As a movie it delivers the same message in an artistic way...Ann Margaret in the beans just shows how rediculously wealthy tommy had become--TV, jewelry, beans soap, mass quantities of consumer products. 1921-1951: not a huge deal, Tommys dad still goes off to war and is MIA, and Tommy becomes a Guru in the 60's which seems like a more appropriate time for that kind of thing anyway.

Pete Townshend – Secondhand Love Lyrics 17 years ago
I gather that in the White City concept, this is about a guy who wants a girl who is a prostitute, maybe he's her boyfriend, maybe she said she doesn't turn tricks anymore, and maybe he doesn't believe her...
Just remember, this is part of a concept album. It was going to be a movie. Pete had written a script and everything.

Pete Townshend – Empty Glass Lyrics 17 years ago
The Demo version on the CD of "Who are you" with the Who providing extra instrumentation is far better than the version on Pete's Solo album for a few reasons: 1. John Entwistle on Bass
2. Keith Moon on drums
and 3. unchanged lyrics.

there is a line in the original demo version that goes:

Someone has used us to shoot with the same gun
Killing each other as we jump off the ledge.

this was changed to what is documented above, but it seems more in touch with that feeling of depression and alchoholism.

To me this is about the feeling after being out all night and still up at dawn, and if you were out all saturday night it works, because Sundays at dawn are really dead. The perfect song to end the night-owls' soundtrack.

Franz Ferdinand – Fade Together Lyrics 18 years ago
It speaks to me as a great Break-up song. Love not Fading even though you really want it to, to move on.

Let's fade together is like saying "you're probably going through these emotions just as I am" to the other half of your recently split relationship.

The feelings fade.
as far as the berlin wall? If you look at what people had to go through to get from east to west berlin when East was communist, you can say a break-up is a lot like that emotionally.
or that "She" is really hard to get over, like the Berlin wall was.

Moon the Loon!

Tommy got a bunch of followers who want to be free like him, so eventually he has to move to a larger facility. Seeing as how Uncle Ernie was vital to what made Tommy who he is, he needs to be part of the experience.

When you come to Tommy's
The holiday's forever

Come to Tommys holiday camp and acheive Freedome forever.

A bio-song, but written by John. he has a good jab at pete in there too.

"There's a rock and roll singer on the television
Giving up his music, gonna take up religion"

then.

"There's a rock and roll singer boppin' on the TV
He used to be a preacher, but now he sings in a major key."

Brilliant, and if you've seen the video, Notice John machine gunning the gold records...those were Roger Daltrey solo albums! haha!

you've licked the song? how does it taste?

I heard that Pete Townshend wrote this song about a woman names theresa, who was married to a friend of his at the time.
He had done some nose candy and just flat out fell in love with her.

He later changed the name to athena, and that's the song.

Of Course mommas gonna help you build a wall.

Mother is overprotective, gonna check out all your girlfriends for you, momma wont let anyone dirty get through.
the last line
Mother did it need to be so high, is reffering to the wall that she helped him build, but being the way she is, she built the thing too damn high, and he has no way out.

U2 – With or Without You Lyrics 22 years ago
I tend to go with the Guy/Girl Interpretation, Like so many others, this song has meaning for me, you guessed it: a Woman, My first TRUE love and I feel the Lyrics in my heart.

I can't live with or without you, means to me, i want her so bad, want to be with her but she has ended it, so I can't live with her (what I want) or without her (what i am doing now).

On a bed of nails, she makes me wait:
this was my life for 1 week, she said she needed time to think, and when she had done this before we had gotten back together.
and anyone who has been through this knows that waiting for that call from her, that call that could end it, is like waiting on a bed of nails.

And you give yourself away:
She found someone else, real soon after she broke up, like the next day, or maybe she had already found him before she broke up with me, i don't know.
Although she gave herself to this other person, i am still in love and missing her.

to recap: As far as I know, this song is about True love, that one that you will always remember, and possibly never fully get over.

To that Woman, the Woman of my dreams, the one I can't live with or without:

Rina, I will always love you

-Reggie
