The Hold Steady – Joke About Jamaica Lyrics 6 years ago
definitely "hot child in the city" in lieu of "hot-shot in the city"

Bruce Springsteen – Further On (Up the Road) Lyrics 6 years ago

Prince – Jack U Off Lyrics 10 years ago
great song to play on your guitar by the campfire

XTC – Summer's Cauldron Lyrics 10 years ago
i think this is more of a spring song than a summer song... it seems to call the image of a day in the 70's and low 80's farenheit. the summers i know don't have this kind of vibe, they have more the vibe of sly & the family stone - there's a riot goin on. britain is more north though, so i understand how that would be the sound of their summer.

Billy Joel – Getting Closer Lyrics 11 years ago
That's not true, though your mom isn't entirely wrong. That song would be "Great Wall of China." This has the exact same theme but is written before Billy realized that Frank Weber was stealing all of his money. This one is for Artie (I forget his last name) who screwed Billy out of a lot of money early in his career, among others. I think it's pretty sad to read the last verse and then realize that Billy was being duped yet again as he wrote and recorded this song. But at that, it's a great song about making peace with those who have screwed you in the past, and not losing faith. But if Billy's life has taught us anything, keep an eye over your shoulder.

Elton John – Made In England Lyrics 11 years ago
anyone know what the "song" in question is? maybe "Daniel" ? "Elton's Song" ? "Razor Face" ?

submissions
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Dani California Lyrics 11 years ago
I never really tend to like their first single when it first comes out, so this one fails to break my optimism for the new album.

R.E.M. – Fireplace Lyrics 11 years ago
Sometimes you get the feeling that you should burn everything you built. I don't know if Stipe was riding that kind of emotion when he wrote this song, but I can connect it with that feeling.

Snoop Dogg – Gin and Juice Lyrics 11 years ago
The "punk" you listen to is not punk, it's mainstream bullshit, repetitive, whiny, for little white teenagers. Little white teenagers like myself... but at least I can see through the crap.

This song is great. Old school rap is a lot of fun to listen to; today's rap, not as much because all the beats are specifically designed to be danceable at middle school dances. Credit them for knowing where the money's at.

Bob Dylan – Changing of the Guards Lyrics 12 years ago
Sixteen years .... isn't that how long he was married, before he was divorced in 1978, which is the year _Street Legal_ and this song came out?

submissions
R.E.M. – Pop Song 89 Lyrics 12 years ago
The song came out in 1988 on the album Green. Apparently it was the 89th song they released.

Third Eye Blind – Losing a Whole Year Lyrics 12 years ago
The "aqua tube" part might also fit into the Gatsby explanation: didn't the book end up with Gatsby floating on a tube in his pool? (trying not to spoil it for those who haven't read)

The Who – The Kids Are Alright Lyrics 12 years ago
I can't believe that nobody has commented on THE ACTUAL MEANING of this song yet. Gosh the abuse of this site is horrible. Anyway, I will avoid hypocrisy and comment. The song is pretty self explanatory, I think. It's about that apathy you feel when you realize that you need to trust your friends and your girl that they'll only be dancing.

Elton John – Daniel Lyrics 12 years ago
Probably the best lyrics Bernie Taupin ever wrote. One of the greatest songs ever written. Nothing to add to the above posts in terms of meaning of the song.

Elvis Costello – Brilliant Mistake Lyrics 12 years ago
Wanna know what's really brilliant? "I wish that I could push a button, and talk in the past and not the present teanse, and watch this hurtin' feeling disappear, like it was common sense" ... I've felt that so many times, and he puts it rather poetically. Awesome

I think he is. I mean... we all know Bowie was heavily influenced by Nirvana!

David Bowie – Oh! You Pretty Things Lyrics 12 years ago
The Homo Superior, eh? I know what he was referring to, homo superior in the sense of "homo sapien", but that's a bit of irony for you.

Jane's Addiction – Had a Dad Lyrics 12 years ago
Yeah definitely religious imagery in this one.

submissions
The Police – Bring On The Night Lyrics 12 years ago
This could be taken literally, or it could be a metaphor. The metaphorical sense would be when you have this strange desire for things to go wrong. Some people because they're masochistic, some want pity, some feel more alive.

Great song for riding through the Pine Barrens on a November night.

Bob Dylan – All Along the Watchtower Lyrics 12 years ago
Man, Dylan plays some mean guitar in this one, and his voice sounds oddly like Jimi Hendrix!

submissions
Bob Dylan – Tombstone Blues Lyrics 12 years ago
The attitude with which he sings makes this one of my favorite songs. I think it's about being poor or something.

Why are the lyrics different? The version I have says "Daddy's in the alley, he's looking for food ... I'm in the kitchen with the tombstone blues"

Counting Crows – If I Could Give All My Love (Richard Manuel Is Dead) Lyrics 12 years ago
In case you guys didn't know, Richard Manuel was in The Band, a great country/folk rock (forgive me, I don't exactly know how to classify them). Adam, and I'm sure other members of Counting Crows are big fans of The Band. Adam wrote this song about one day when he woke up and read the paper and saw that Richard Manuel was dead. After that, in my opinion, he proceeded to do what my girlfriend calls "thinking too much". heh. And out came this song. Like I said, it conceivably could be a riff from The Band.

submissions
The Cure – Lovesong Lyrics 12 years ago
On "The Figurehead" from Pornography, Robert ends the song repeating the line "I will never be clean again". Here, the last line (of the verses) is "You make me feel like I am clean again". Cool to think about.

R.E.M. – Talk About The Passion Lyrics 12 years ago
The liner notes of Eponymous cite this as a "hunger song". Not sure if that's literal or not.

Limp Bizkit – Behind Blue Eyes (The Who cover) Lyrics 12 years ago
Let me just state, as a disclaimer, that I'm a HUGE fan of The Who and I despise Limp Bizkit in general. Now, that being said:

You pompous piece of trash. This is a fine cover. It doesn't have the total feel of the original, but it's an adequate interpretation. The fact that you claim the original is "one of your favorites" and this is "the worst cover song ever" raises questions about your actual objectivity. Stop trying to sound smart and cultured with your put-down of Limp Bizkit and worship of The Who on what is two very similar versions of the SAME DAMN SONG. You are definitely the stereotypical ignorant trash Eagles fan. (But they have one hell of a team this year)

On the other side, you're so right about how they left out the killer solo, which is the highlight of the song for me.

This song is a good impression/tribute to The Band.

I'm not sure... the "tough street punks" seem to look a little more like Steven Van Zandt than actual street punks.

Dave Matthews Band – Satellite Lyrics 12 years ago
Well, a satellite is the only thing that defies the law of "what goes up, must come down". The only way to ascend without descending accordingly is to become a satellite.

Dave Matthews Band – Everyday Lyrics 12 years ago
This is one of the better songs on the CD. Sounds like what I consider the real Dave Matthews Band, unlike "The Space Between" (musically atrocious compared to his earlier works) or "I Did It" (blech)

Jane's Addiction – Then She Did... Lyrics 12 years ago
The song ties Xiola's death to Perry's mother's suicide. The "you" in this song is Xiola. The outro part is self-explanatory when you look at it that way. A very powerful song.

R.E.M. – Ignoreland Lyrics 12 years ago
True, it's an anti-Republican song. Musically, it almost sounds like something off Billy Joel's _The Nylon Curtain_. Also, I may note that this album (_Automatic for the People_) was released on October 6, 1992, before the presidential election; Stipe didn't know that Bush would lose a month later.
