Could be about being dumped or something, but to me it really seems about someone dying. It just seems too depressing to be about love. Obviously lots of things can make you wake up feeling depressed, but i think only severe depression or berevement make you wake up and wish you were dead and feel so low you can't get out of bed all day. And the main line of the world spinning on is often a phrase used when someone had died and the impact is so final and shattering that it seems absurd that everyone else can just carry on as normal, i know alot of people feel like how can the world keep spinning when someone has died, i know i did. I think the person is wondering whether their loved one has gone to heaven or infact anywhere and they're regretting they didn't get to do all the things they wanted to with the person and so now there's simply no point in carrying on, you feel like the world has stopped for you too. Also the line 'I always say good bye' makes me think it too. as you never know when your last goodbye to someone could be. |

ohh i love this song, cant quite decide what its about, seems its kinda just about life in general but the guy isn't very happy, he feels alone but hes hiding it all and no one can tell how he feels. 'i'm on the otherside, you dont know, you cant tell' 'i'm all dressed up in disguise' hes become good at hiding his unhappiness 'its easy they say, you just smile the day away' faking it for everyone. it also seems it could be about an alcoholic, whether its him or someone else 'so push away what hurts, we'll show you a drink to hold you in' drinking to make themselves feel better and forget their problems but whoever it is keeps swearing to someone they wont drink anymore 'crossing your heart wont be easy this time, when you raise your trembling hand, and swear away' and the last bit seems he just wonders when things will get better, 'when will life change for me' he wants to leave and go somehwere else, either away from himself and start again or whoever the other person is he wnats to understand how he feels 'and know whats on my chest, arrest my heart' |

seems a bit like depression to me, like the water is her crying and he wants to know when she'll stop but he also knows she cant control it so she cant stop. also thought it kinda repressents rain, cos people get sad when it rains, and hes wondering how long she'll stay sad.
'you sank into yourself and i got lost somewhere inbetween' like she can only sit and be sad and he wanted to help her but hes got lost because he cant do anything, and he loves her so he cant leave. and the last bit i think hes talking about himself, she got involved with him 'wahsed up on his shore' but because of her state of mind she cant think about him or care about him cos shes too overwhelmed with her own unhappiness. just my thought. |

I also think this song is about self harm "hands on the mirror cant get much clearer cant make it all go away" seems to me like most cutters usually hate themselves in some way and like hating what you see in the mirror but you cant make the feelings go away so you cut yourself "now that your bleeding, you stare at the ceiling and watch as it all fades away" is how cutting yourself eases the pain and can make you space out (dunno if anyone gets what i mean) and "from what you do, because of you" is how you do it to yourself cos your so messed up. and he says he cant be there each time that she calls and he doesn't wanna go but he cares to much and always goes anyway but hates seeing what she's doing to herself and feels he cant sit and watch her kill herself like this but also doesn't know what else to do. The next bit i'm undecided on, maybe the person went to far and almost died, or maybe took some drugs too and she's saying she's sorry "now that you did this you ask for forgivness" and she didn't mean to do it, "you say your mistaken but look what you've taken" and then she's laughing it off, saying it was an accident and it wont happen again but he knows it will "you laugh as you lie through your teeth" so yea thats my opinion, not sure if its right but its still a wicked song and shows it from the perspective of someone trying to help a self harmer and the frustration they feel but there's not much they can do cos they have to help themsleves. |

beautiful song, definatley. but when he sings about "fall down on your knees, cut ur hands, cut urself until u bleed" does he mean, in the process off falling she cuts herself, or does he literally mean shes cutting herself purposely cos shes unhappy? if anyone has any thoughts.... |

ur not the only one skater gal, i'm 17 and have listened to the counting crows for ages, i also got into them cos of my 23 yr old brother! i love all their albums and i reckon this one is just as good as the rest. although american girls is more commercialised than their other songs i think its good, that way ppl will here it and listen to their other songs as well. everyone should get the chance to listen to cc, they might not have older brothers to show them how great they are! |
