Incubus – Redefine Lyrics 19 years ago
Jabba-I don't believe that people become "sell-outs" upon the moment of recognition of talent by big label producers. I could give you many grounds upon which "I"(a musician myself) would refuse a big label offer, however, that's just me and to each their own. And no, you don't "have" to go corporate just to get signed up with a label. Check out to of my favorite groups first albums the "Doors" and "Mr Bungle", they were signed with major labels and had complete creative control and created some of the best albums ever made imho.

You mention that a band must do 3 things in order to not compromise their integrity, I'd say the last 2 are in question in regards to Incubus.

However, if Incubus truly didn't know who they are when they created SCIENCE then thats unfortunate for me, but cool for them I suppose. A lot of great artists have switched styles because of uncertainty (i.e. Vanilla Ice, Michael Bolton...). I'm just astounded that what they really want to do is a 180 degree turn from what they used to do.

I've covered the diminshed overall quality of their songs elsewhere so I won't touch on that. I'll just say that I agree with you on that their are a lot of "average" songs on the Crow album.

Yep kiltman is correct, the song is from the Threepenny Opera an old German piece about a pimp named Macheath who beats his girls.

Faith No More – The Real Thing Lyrics 20 years ago
Winter, actually, I've changed my mind, this song isnt solely about heroin, I think its just about a person who is addicted to getting high (escaping reality) in general. Most of the lines just seem to hint at that meaning.

"You swallow another dose", "Clench your fist...pump through your veins", "It kills you a bit at a time", "the jewel of victory and the chasm of misery", these all seem to point to a person who realizes their addicted to leaving reality for awhile but who can't stop doing it even though they realize its killing them.

Just some thoughts.

Does anyone know what the heck this song is about, other than a way for the band to use their name in a song?

Incubus – Redefine Lyrics 21 years ago
Active, I would argue that on SCIENCE they showed an uncharacteristic willingness to tread softly, using acoustic guitars and touches of strings to make less noise, but more impact. Check out Summer Romance, an equally brilliant song. My point is not that they have gotten softer, it is just that they have conformed to present day whiny college boy music and their songs have lost their muscial complexity along the way.

Incubus – Redefine Lyrics 21 years ago
(THIS IS A RESPONSE TO NOWHERE FAST)

Hi there, let me see if I can defend my own position of Incubus against the contrasting points that you make. I believe that these are in the order that you make them.

1. Incubus' style has evolved into better muscianship then S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and the earlier albums.----I am sorry but if you believe that than you obviously have never touched a musical instrument in your life. Remember, slower music does not = better quality as you argue. In fact, it can take just as much talent, and often more talent to play faster. But speed is not the only issue. Listen to the sheer amount of time changes, key changes, and diversity of music packed into most of the songs of their early material. The amount of musicianship in their present day whiny college boy years can not even begin to compare to that.

2. More people like heavy, fast music than they like slow stuff---If this is true, can you tell me why Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera have been two fo the biggest sellers in recent years while heavy bands with lots of talent (I suppose this exlcudes most "nu-metal" continue to see declining record sales), the fact is, people want to hear stuff more along the lines that Incubus is putting out right now.

3. People don't want to hear the same style of music over and over again----I do. As long as there is kick ass songs on there Ill buy an album over and over again even if it sounds the same, hell I own every Metallica album from Ride the Lightning to And Justice for All (while there is arguably some change amongst the albums, the Metallica that put out And Justice For All is essentially the same Metallica that put out Ride the Lightining). I don't think this could be said of old Incubus and new Incubus.

Word, fool.

Faith No More – Last Cup Of Sorrow Lyrics 21 years ago
I always kind of thought this song was about the break up of Faith No More. "this is getting old and so are you", Patton wants to move on to his side projects because he's bored with FNM. And maybe he's saying good bye to the rest of the band and that they can make it without him i.e. "You might surprise yourself".

Hmm hypo, you might be right. I just looked closer at the lyrics, and now I realize that the guy light himself on fire with the ladies cigarette in a suicide attempt. (i.e. the smoke will hide the shame, you'll find my silhouette (the man's black ashes) ). Thx for showing me the light :)

Dio – Holy Diver Lyrics 22 years ago
"Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he's clean
Oh don't you see what I mean "

Ronnie is singing about doing heroin. Tiger is slang for heroin, which makes those black cc measurment lines on the syringe its "stripes", and as a bonus, the heroin is clean.

Mr. Bungle – Backstrokin' Lyrics 22 years ago
This song reminds me of the opening scene of Lynch's "Blue Velvet", basically its all about how human society seems all neat, tidy, happy, and organized on the surface, but once you get underneath it, there's some really ugly stuff going on. Listen to the last half of the song, in the foreground is a beautiful piano melody, but if you listen underneath that you hear some of the most god awful sounds, and then the final lyrics come in.

Possibly Bungle's best song. This song reminds me of ingesting 500 mics or so of LSD laced with PCP, and then just for kicks some friends and I decide to go to a carnvial funhouse and end up in the hall of mirrors with serial killer clowns.

Mr. Bungle – None Of Them Knew They Were Robots Lyrics 22 years ago
Mr Bungles guitarist (and the one who wrote the song) had this to say about it. "I just want to clarify that reference to Omega Point in NOTKTWR does not make the song 'about' that subject. Tipler's brand of scientific cryptotheology is just one of the elements taken into consideration in the song - I use it to help illustrate a point. Namely, that the reductionist tendency in physics/sciences springs from the same source as the worst religious Dogmatism. Gnostics would argue that both serve the Demiurgos, or False God - creator of the physical universe, who unwittingly conceals the True Hidden God while imagining himself to be The One. In any case, the reference to St. Augustine is not there to bash religion, but to help chart the linear history of where science and religion converge in their satanic pact (In the beginning was a Bang!). Most importantly, these images deal with the timeless tendency to overly-literalistic reductionism - how we render the universe to ourselves prematurely, and round out the edges to make it consistent with our beliefs. No area of inquiry is immune - we're lucky if we can penetrate any respective channel of 'human knowledge' deep enough to discover the three or four totally shit-upon luminaries who are sitting there dispersed through time in backed-up sewer-systems of brainbending superfluous nonsense.

"I hope people will at least see that the song doesn't consider science or religion to be particularly opposed in this regard. Sure, with the Inquisition we all have historical precedent for the severity of 'religious' atrocities - but it [cyclical time] might make you wonder which cloak the Beast will don to the next be-heading party... has it already begun? Either it never started, or it will never end. None of them knew..."

Mr. Bungle – Pink Cigarette Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is all about a beauty queen wife who cheats on her husband and treats him like crap. So one night while she is sleeping he decides to kill himself. I give bonus point to Bungle for throwing in the alarm clock at the end. Bungle is giving the perspective of the sleeping wife, the alarm clock comes in slowly at first almost inperciptanbly (like sounds of reality coming into your dreams as you begin to wake), then it gets louder as the wife wakes and finds her husband dead.

Heh, it's pretty ironic that they would choose to write a song about not being what other people want them to be. Considering that after they came out with this brilliant album and immediately cashed in their talent by changing their style conforming to that whiny college boy "rock" that record companies are tyring so hard to promote these days.

The best band ever. This song makes me feel like I've taken about 600mics of really bad acid, an eight ball, and a few hits of angel dust all at once. And just for kicks, I decide to go to a carnival funhouse and I get locked in there with a bunch of incestuous serial killer clowns.

Faith No More – Smaller And Smaller Lyrics 22 years ago
Not entirely sure, but the little native american interlude leads me to believe that this song is about the oppression of the native american's by the European settlers. The song begins with a description of a modern day reservation in the desert and then flashes back and tells how their land kept getting smaller and smaller until all they had left was charity hand-me-downs from the Amercians.

Not entirely sure on this one, but I believe it is about the rise and fall of the Soviet Union, particularly the Stalin era (i.e. he made us proud, and made us rich, but how were we to know he's counterfiet). The rest of the song seems to list soviet communistic ideals (i.e. captial from boy, women and man, working overtime).
