Neil Diamond – I Am... I Said Lyrics 5 years ago
As mentioned, "I am" is used in the bible when God refers to himself.

Hence "I'm not a man that likes to swear" - as he's calling the Lord's name.

I'm am atheist, but believe this song is a man feeling lost, calling out for God's direction but feeling like those prayers are going unanswered.

He's looking for a greater purpose, hoping religion fills that void.

Robbie Williams – Come Undone Lyrics 7 years ago
This song is really obvious, I'm amazed by people missing the point.

This song is purely about Robbie and stardom - and him being a creation of the media and the fans etc. They make him famous, they create the cycle, he just lives it.

Selling razor blades and mirrors is obviously a cocaine reference, but it's a metaphor for a bigger picture. Again, he's saying that they make him what he is - they write the stories, they provide the tools, the fame and the wealth. He is a product of the environment created by the media and fans - who then are the ones who judge the stars for what they become.

@[global:19489] It's definitely sub. Someone should change this.

Katy Perry – Firework Lyrics 8 years ago
The metaphors in this song make me absolutely cringe. They're everything that is wrong with modern pop music. Shallow, no deeper meaning, just simple ridiculous similes.

Bob Dylan – Mr. Bojangles Lyrics 9 years ago
Yes, he did - and I love Bob but his cover is terrible. But it didn't say that when I wrote the comment in 2005 ;)

Miley Cyrus – Wrecking Ball Lyrics 9 years ago
@[PercyLou:1670] I agree with this. Everyone says it's about a relationship, I think that's obvious. But I think it means much more than that. And I think Mile is much smarter than she lets on, as it certainly suits the image she tries to portray.

This song was easily one of the better of the 'trashy pop" songs that comes out of the US.

I definitely think this was written with at least some thought of the music industry and media.

Kris Kristofferson – The Law Is For Protection Of The People Lyrics 10 years ago
I think you've looked at it very very literally and only scraped the surface. This isn't so much about hypocritical police officers, this is a much bigger political statement than that. This is about governments and the powers that be trying to control everything, and focusing their efforts on ridiculous pursuits to try and silence anybody who is different or who disagrees with what they're trying to achieve. Basically it's a satire of the nanny state movement in general - and governments arresting/silencing peaceful protesters etc.

Kris Kristofferson – For The Good Times Lyrics 10 years ago
One of the best breakup songs ever - so much cynicism towards love, quite a bit of passive aggression and sarcasm...Up there with Don't Think Twice It's Alright by Bob Dylan, and Dreams by Fleetwood Mac.

John Williamson – Galleries Of Pink Galahs Lyrics 10 years ago
As John Williamsons says himself - your songs are like children, you're not allowed to have favourites, but everyone secretly does. When pushed this is his own favourite, and it's not hard to see why. It paints a scene of country Australia. Takes me to my childhood. Amazing song.

Cold Chisel – Breakfast At Sweethearts Lyrics 11 years ago
About heading to Sweethearts Cafe in Kings Cross after an all nighter.

The street sweepers come in really early morning and sweep the streets clean of all the junk from the night before.

Speed shivers are Barnes coming down from speed, and all other stimulants were available to a rocker at Sydney's most notorious night spot.

Cold Chisel – Breakfast At Sweethearts Lyrics 11 years ago
Barnes didn't write Khe Sanh, Don Walker did. However THIS song is about Sweethears at Kings Cross as you mentioned. 1/2 isn't bad!

Kaiser Chiefs – I Predict a Riot Lyrics 13 years ago
It should say "An old Leodiensian", not "And old Leodiensians". They're talking about John Smeaton, who is an Old Leodiensian. ie. a former pupil of Leeds Grammar.

How do we get the lyrics changed?

submissions
Cold Chisel – Khe Sanh Lyrics 13 years ago
The lyrics here are wrong...It says "And each one found me aimless, one more year the worse for wear" NOT "more for wear" as is written above

Actually, this isn't true, but is a well known wives tale. JJW has said a few times it wasn't about "Bojangles" but another guy he actually did meet in jail.

Flight of the Conchords – Inner City Pressure Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree 100% shrodes (which means I'm afraid I disagre NightsirK...100% a rip off of West End Girls. I've played the songs straight after each other numerous times.

The verses are basically indentical, they even put on the english accents! The chorus is where it changes a little, but it fits in, except for the last part of West End Girls chorus the fade out "West End Girls"

Can anyone tell me what they say in the background throughout the chorus? I've got the "Sha La" and "So Far" part, but that's it

Hunters & Collectors – Throw Your Arms Around Me Lyrics 19 years ago
Ive heard Pearl Jam, and Crowded House both do covers of this song, and both were brilliant...But Hunters still do it so well...

Eddie Vedder was a good friend of the guys from Split Enz, Crowded House and Hunters and Collectors (the lead from Hunters is the brother of the basist from CH)...Thats why Pearl Jam, or atleast Eddie Vedder does lots of stuff with the Finn brothers, Crowded House or Hunters.

Bon Jovi – Blaze Of Glory Lyrics 19 years ago
Just realised some of the lyrics above are wrong (im 90% sure)...

In the chorus it says:
"Im going DOWN in a Blaze of Glory
Take me now, but know the truth
Im going OUT in a Blaze of Glory..."

Bon Jovi – Blaze Of Glory Lyrics 19 years ago
I have the 'movie version' of this song, where a quote from the movie has been added at the start...

"William H Bonney, you are not a God!"
"Why dont you pull the trigger and find out..."

Adds just that little bit to the song I think..Top song, and even better for fans of the story of Billy the Kid, William H Bonney.

Bob Dylan – Mr. Bojangles Lyrics 19 years ago
Bob Dylan did NOT write this song.

It was written by Jerry Jeff Walker, who Ive asked to be added to the artists list. JJ Walker also performed it originally, and then the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band made a hit out of it, as did Neil Diamond and Sammy Davis Jr.

Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree that this song is about the music industry, esp. the industry taking advantage of young artists, the big labels getting what they want and then being done with them.

Keane – Bedshaped Lyrics 19 years ago
Two friends, that grew up together (they may even be related?). One wants to move on, and get change. Leave their roots so to speak. The other is saying that is part of them, and they cant leave it behind. Four legs of stone Im guessing is that theyre stuck here, and will always come back, but Im not really positive on the bedshaped part, it has me stumped.

But basically the song is that one friend wants to move on, and thinks the other doesnt understand. The other is saying they do understand, but knows that the other wont listen and will have to learn for themself-but will soon be back.

Crowded House – Chocolate Cake Lyrics 20 years ago
Nice one nnop. I definitely agree. Andrew Warhol was an artist that had left views, and was despised by the right wing of his time.

The song does have a very arty theme, Andrew Warhol, Picasso.

Tammy Baker is a 'patron saint of the consumer church...Another one also involved with art, but in particular religion..Anyway top song.

Crowded House – Fingers Of Love Lyrics 20 years ago
I have heard numerous theories about this song, most say that the lyrics are about Neil Finns lover for music, in particular his guitar...His 'fingers of love' strum his guitar.

However, Im sorry to disappoint, but off the air (my brother is a leading DJ at a Sydney radio station) Neil Finn told my brother the song was about masturbation, and it was written when he was smoking weed...But he likes the idea of the guitar thing, so often goes along with it.

Thought I should add..

After analysing this song some more, I think that it is also very much about Paul Hester, who is known to be veyr moody. Infact 'Black and White Boy' is also said to be about Hester.

Crowded House – Four Seasons In One Day Lyrics 21 years ago
Neill Finn has told that this song is about Melbourne. And on the surface it definitely is...But he gets deeper, and speaks about much more.
As Kaatrien said, its about the good and the bad, or as Neill has put it "the rough with the smooth...the clean with the dirty"

"Smiling as the shit comes down"...Keeping a brave face whilst all around u seems to be collapsing...looking to the bright side of life.

Paul Hester is the drummers name, and he says "you have to be prepared to take the good with the bad" during a live performance of "sister madly" where he made a mistake...Neill goes on to say Rough with smooth, clean with dirty etc..

Wherever there is comfort, there is pain only one step away.

Crowded House – Mean To Me Lyrics 21 years ago
Te Awamutu is the New Zealand town Neill and Tim Finn grew up in.
This song is about a girl that Neill met, and her story. She was american, and was there just out of luck. Te Awamutu sounded like something different so she packed up and went.
Everyone hda left her, and she pleaded for Neill to stay. So he talked to her, in the pub which they met. Thikning of a padded cell-he didnt want to be there, felt like he was stuck. Black and White TV to stop us from getting lonely-Little else in the pub.

Neill for some reason stayed-showing Mysterious Sympathy.

Crowded House – Don't Dream It's Over Lyrics 21 years ago
Freedom within, Freedom without..
Obviously there are always two sides to everything, and both will have their postives.
Catching a deluge in a paper cup. The cup will be full, but you wont stop the flood.
Battle ahead..not sure what the battle is, perhaps a relationship? Many battles are lost->it may come to nothing. But you never see the end of the road while ur traveling with him...He'll never say never, never just put an end to something.
Chorus: Outside forces keeping them apart...BUt they wont win, there is always hope for each other...They can only keep themself apart.
Towing my car-Helping himself? Not sure about te possesions causing suspicion...
Paper->There are big things to worry about, but we continue to look at our own lives, and small things like TV. Building a wall between the real world, and the fun imaginative world of TV?

Great Song, i love all crowdies..

Crowded House – Nails in My Feet Lyrics 21 years ago
Very interesting song..Im amazed no one has looked further into this one...and its my name :D
Obviously its about his(Neill Finns) life..Nails in his feet would most likely be his restrictions...He is being held down by something.
Not exactly sure why the house metaphor, but the whole song is full of metaphors and non-literal phrases...anyone?
I think at the end, he realises that there is more to his life then "inside the house" but really im just confusing myself...

Billy Joel – Piano Man Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is quite a literal song really. The meaning is exactly what is written...

However, did anyone ever notice that Paul and Davey are most likely gay? Paul has "never had time for a wife", and Davey will probably be in the navy for life..The Navy is often associated with homosexuality (no offence to either gays, or anyone in the navy)
