Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show – Sylvia's Mother Lyrics

Kenshin23 is right, it was written by Shel Silverstein, and it's supposed to be satirical, but it became a big hit because people took it seriously. It's kind of hard not to though, because the delivery is so emotional. I think if Shel himself had sung it, it would have come out a lot differently. |

Rufus Wainwright – In My Arms Lyrics

To answer stoppretending's question, the Elephant Man (Real name Joseph Merrick) lived during the late 19th century and had a severe physical deformity that made him an outcast, but overcame it and became very well respected in London society. He died very young, I think he was in his late twenties.
About the song: I love it. I think it's about being with someone who has so many problems, and even though you know you can't take them all away, you can make it better just for a little while. |

Johnny Cash – Ring of Fire Lyrics

Some imbecile once told me that Johnny Cash wrote this song after he started a forest fire with a cigarette. Actually, it wasn't even written by him at all, it was written by his wife. |

Mary Chapin Carpenter – House of Cards Lyrics

I think this song is about lovers who came from broken homes and are realizing that they're re-living that, and their life is like a house of cards that could come crashing down at any minute. |

This song is about the risks that you have to take to make your life worth living. The message here is that if you never take a risk, then you'll never reach your full potential. |

Garth Brooks – That Summer Lyrics

This is a coming of age song, and is rather disturbing when you think about it. It involves a teenage boy and an adult (30-40 year old) woman. Think about it: if the gender roles had been reversed, this song never would have made it to air, and Garth Brooks would have been branded a pervert. |

Simon and Garfunkel – Richard Cory Lyrics

I could go on forever about this song, having already picked the poem apart for an English paper. There are two really ironic things here: first, that this guy who looks so fortunate could want to kill himself, and second, that the narrator STILL wants to be like Richard Cory at the end of the song. It's as though the narrator doesn't get it. The very thing that made Cory appear so happy could have made him feel alienated from other people, thus leading to his suicide. |

Simon and Garfunkel – I Am A Rock Lyrics

The main point of this song is, avoid emotional attatchments, they only lead to sadness. The lyrics "friendship causes pain" and "If I never loved I never would have cried" express that. The song is about getting hurt once and shutting out everyone else to avoid getting hurt again. |
