Operation Ivy – Jaded Lyrics 21 years ago
wow. it seems back in the day the kids thought punk was dying too. i find the verse
"with fifteen fights and your six bucks
has gone up some promoters nose "
really funny for some reason. And it's a good message they put out, no matter how sour you think the scene is getting, there's always these little moments or people that puts faith right back in there and glad that you found your refuge in the scene. It really is a beautiful thing now and then. Jesse sounds cynical about the scene, but at the same time still appreciates what it has done and what it was capable of doing to kids in the past. and even if you come and go, you'll remember the goodtimes and it wasn't ALL bad. it's true in a way. Punk rock seems to be less about outright rebellion for the sake of rebellion, but more as a clique where troubled kids who are rebelling because they are angry with life and how badly they've been treated (whether it be abuse, or not being believed in, or just being fussed over too much) would go to for some comfort. I think this song will be just as relevant ten or twenty years from now as it is today and 15 yrs back, because the scene will endure. you'll get the new punk bands who are doing this for the money and become bitches for corporations and trends, but there will always be those wanting to go back to the spirit of punk in '77 and the 80s looking for some positivity to share.

Operation Ivy – Missionary Lyrics 21 years ago
Chilling reference to christianity.
the whole "on my way to save the world." brings to light so many events, the burning of protestants in England, the spanish inquisition. And when paired with the word, missionary, it brings to mind when the spanish started sending friars to the southwest to educate indians. "i want to see my name on the map" sounds alot like imperialistic spain when a shitload of focus was placed on religion in each region they conquered in the americas. "burning books", well a lot of this happened whenever overly religios types get carried away. overall very impressive socio-politcal commentary. if i tried writing lyrics about the same topic at jesse's age, mine would sound like pure shit compared to this.

Operation Ivy – Hoboken Lyrics 21 years ago
Sounds like a someone did something bad to someone else that really bothered them but they won't tell the other what's wrong. The person is very tightlipped but the other is very concerned about what exactly happened and can't stop thinking about what could possibly go wrong because he values their friendship. but really now, what's up with the Hoboken reference? I only hear good things about Hoboen.

Rancid – Olympia WA Lyrics 21 years ago
assholes aside, this is a kickass song. It's pretty melodic which is good. Sounds like a song about not being comfortable with your surroundings. like homesickness or being in the business of a city like NY just depresses you seeing how needlessly hectic some people's lives can be and it makes you appreciate your lifestyle and where you're from. and the NOFX cover just killed the melancholy mood :(

Choking Victim – Suicide (A Better Way) Lyrics 21 years ago
this song is disturbing. I don't think they intended it to be a pro-suicide song (but hell if know what goes on in stza's head), it's just an expression on the helplessness of a situation and how you want it all to end. i guess enduring when the situation has just got so f*cked up you feel like you can't go on isn't as attractive as ending it right here right now. I'm sure a lot of people have felt a point in time where you just wanted it all to stop. well, CV hasn't killed themselves yet, otherwise there wouldn't be any LOC :)

Rites of Spring – For Want Of Lyrics 21 years ago
Song's about (in my opinion). A guy that just experienced a break up, but still wishes for the past. The break up obviously wasn't mutual. he's looking back knowing that the relationship was bad for him, but it felt so good to care for someone he just doesn't give a f*ck. All he has now are the memories, and he'll live his own fantasies every night remembering and hopefully that's good enough for his ailing heart.

This is a very beautiful song. The way emo was and should always stay, drenched with emotion, powerful lyrics. When you're as anguished as Guy here. You just want to SCREAM, scream as if a million splinters are tearing at your heart propelled by the girl/guy you loved while looking at them with shocked eyes with a voice that pleads for them to stop screaming because they can't hear you while at the same time shrieking at how much of a bitch they are for forsaking your feelings like that.

so much raw emotion! Before the Jimmy Eay Worlds and Get up kids, and saves the days, emo bands like rites of spring and early fugazi screamed out the dark feelings of their heart, how shitty they feel inside, and in their shows would thrash around in a masochistic like manner with blood on the floor and petals scattering the ground proving to the one they once loved that they can attempt to hurt themselves more than they could ever hurt them, but to no avail. Rites of Spring scream and sing like a soul that's dying. Their songs should be forced through the ears of any ex that has hurt you.

Saves the Day – You Vandal Lyrics 21 years ago
a very sweet song in a very graphic description. i don't know if i should be queesy with emotion or queesy visualizing spleens leaking. ew.

but seriously. this song is very heartwarming. how someone can miss another that much is just touching. it's great he still thinks his chick should have a great time no matter how painful it is for him to see her gone, he knows it's best for her. This is a great song, and i think this is a ghost of what STD used to be, their old stuff off of this record (through being cool) is just great pop-punk. I'm not a fan of their songs now, i think 'freakish' is offensive to the ears, but i hear they're doing a new album that's supposed to be radically different from their old stuff. by old stuff i just hope they mean old stuff as in, last album old stuff. great song anyway

Anti-Flag – Davey Destroyed The Punk Scene Lyrics 21 years ago
i agree with the majority of this board, this song is basically synonymous to "Captain Anarchy". Now i don't really think this song is about "poseurs" per say. This song could very well be about elitists. elitism is running very rampant in the scene now, even people that i talk to that used to be "i'll never call anyone a poseur" is now running around giving dirty looks to anyone just getting into the scene that happens to like the "wrong band". this is probably due to the rise of punk floating into the mainstream. I can define poseur, a poseur is someone who doesn't believe a shit of what scene they're in or what they're listening to, they just do it because it looks cool and makes them intimidating.

whoever this "davey is", doesn't have to be this guy working 4hrs to make sure his shirt looks so ripped and punk it hurts while listening to some avril lavigne. It could very well be someone that is wearing all the leather, and the mohawk and listening to the exploited, a veteran of the scene who just turned sour at all these little kids running around. Punk is becoming a very closed circle. Just take a look around, too many kids pointing fingers at eachother saying "you're cons aren't dirty enough, did mommy and daddy not let you walk in the f*cking rain with the nice shoes they bought you?" or "blink 182? wtf? listen to some REAL music! like The Ramones *blah blah blah*". Punks can very well tear their own scene apart. Just because someone got into your circle by listening to the not-so-political-corporate whore-of-a-band doesn't mean they can't contribute in a positive way. A-F may be saying that the punk scene is getting destroyed not by those who don't recognize the ideals of "punk is in the mind!" because everyone knows that, but by people that make the scene so closed off to newcomers or place this heirarchal structure in the scene. By hierarchal structure, i mean the whole "who's mohawk is highest", which goes back to appearances and who earns more punk points by having this article of clothing on them. And not to mention punks who think just because they're so "punk and anti-authority raaahhhh!" they can only speak to other punks and ONLY other punks and will spit on you if you so much as approach them with a sweater vest and khakis. punk's becoming another friggen clique too often, where people eye eachother up and down and form their own little island. just because you're not punk doesn't mean you're bad. Davey is just that, an unaccepting little prick with a huge-ass ego with an even bigger mohawk.

A kid that listens to greenday to me isn't a poseur, nor is one that listens to blink-182. If a kid listens to a great band like anti-flag but thinks their political views are shit and they just stop talking at a show and play their music but insist on wearing the shirts because it says "ANTI-flag" and brags to his friends how punk he is because he saw them live and he got a cool-ass spike bracelet the same day (which is by the way, spikier than yours!), then the kid could be a poseur and be slapped.

and to xThePunishedx. Fatwreck isn't anarchopunk, fat mike is a democrat not an anarchist and i can't even name one anarcho band on fat. you want an anarcho-band, listen to hopeless dregs of humanity or Against Me! and dressing like a normal person won't change your mindset, if it does... they're pathetic. this post is long enough......

The Clash – Spanish Bombs Lyrics 21 years ago
song's about the spanish civil war. here's a little breakdown (incomplete)...

"Spanish songs in Andalucia
The shooting sites in the days of '39 "-----the spanish civil war. 1936-1939. Franco's fascist troops invade spain while an Anarchist and Proletariet spain who just ousted it's monarch tries to keep them away. Franco starts taking spain by force. Andulacia is in spain

"Fredrico Lorca is dead and gone " an andulacian poet. andulacia was the first part of spain to fall to franco. franco then started to cleanse andulacia of leftist advocates. this included lorca who's plays had such themes as democracy.

"The black cars of the Guardia Civil"- black is an anarachist color. the guardia civil were troops protecting spain from the fascists, they were of anarchist/proletariat/communist affiliation.

"I'm flying in a DC 10 tonight " Us gov't plane.

"Spanish bombs, yo tequierro y finito
Yote querda, oh mi corazon" literal spanish translation = spanish bombs oh i want them to end, oh my heart!!!

"The freedom fighters died upon the hill" the freedom fighters were the coalition of the Popular Front including the Socialist UGT, the Trotskyite POUM, the Anarchist CNT and FAI, the Communist PSUC. these were the government of spain under attack. fighting against franco, they most likely died due to overwhelming arms
from the other side.

"They sang the red flag
They wore the black one", the coalition of the spanish government against the threat of franco were a mixture of communists and anarchists. the red flag is a symbol of communism, while the black flag is a symbol of anarchism.

"Back home the buses went up in flashes
The Irish tomb was drenched in blood" the Clash are from the UK. this is relating to the incidents of the IRA (something having to do with pissed-relgious-irish folk).

"The hillsides ring with "Free the people"
Or can I hear the echo from the days of '39?" The spanish people cry for liberation, Franco ruled spain until his death in 1975. Spain was under a fascist dictatorship until then. echos from the start of the spanish civil war, the war that they lost.

"With trenches full of poets" poets fought in the war too. could be a reference to frederico lorca

"The ragged army, fixin' bayonets to fight the other line". the ragged army were the people's militia that formed in towns to combat franco. they had no aid from their own government, they were all using their own guns. so if they broke, they must fix them themselves. they were tired and fatigued, and poor. thus in rags.

"Spanish bombs rock the province". eh, maybe not spanish bombs. but Guernica was in the province. it's a small hamlet bombarded with bombs for no particular reason, only to cripple the morale of spain.

"Spanish bombs on the Costa Brava
I'm flying in on a DC 10 tonight
Spanish songs in Andalucia, Mandolina, oh mi corazon
Spanish songs in Granada, oh mi corazon" a hitlist of bomb sites.

.....I have no life. lol

Anti-Flag – Gifts From America: With Love, the U.S.A. Lyrics 21 years ago
Anti-flag makes a great point. for "oil interests" this war bush is waging, it's not about terrorism as much as he likes it to be. america is at an economic decline, he wants more oil, because when he was still a businessman oil = $$$$. what do we need at an economic decline? $$$. what are we going to spend and lose by going to this war? a sh*tload of $$$$$$!!!!!!! 45 billion for this war. justin's got it! and they were hilarious at the plea for peace tour in philly. justin starts yelling at the crowd "and that asshole george w. bush can kiss my fucking ass!!!" he was inciting a rebellion in that place!

The Distillers – The Young Crazed Peeling Lyrics 21 years ago
just don't give a damn if they're on mtv or not. just stop watching the channel, stop asking your friends what went on with that channel. it's just plain dumbs sometimes when people use mtv or mtv as their "poseur thermostat!". if you're in a band, you'll want to be heard, and it just so happens mtv runs our pathetic little teen culture. if they wish to use up these pathetic men in suits in mtv so they can get more airplay, go right on ahead. mtv is a corporation, it's a business, it provides services. If they're idea of success is how many people hear them, there is no better way that will get you the most results in the least amount of time. the only time it'll get out of hand is once the band starts forgetting about their fans, changed their musically style RADICALLY in order to sell more records (for the $$$), or change their belief system and the reason why they came into the scene to begin with. If it's all about the music, then they made the music to show off their feelings, or to get a certain reaction from people. What makes some "punks" think they're so much better than other people that they can only own certain band?! don't be so discriminating against a band, or their new fans just because they're on some sort of channel. it's not like people have nothing better to do than make a little "indie hit-list" for bands that pop up on mtv/mtv2. those bands are used, they're disposed. the channel had their run with them, they gave them the services, they're done.

The Distillers – L.A. Girl Lyrics 21 years ago
...wow, thanks to whoever provided the courtney love theory! and to phoebe. courtney exploited the death of her husband to get recognition, not only that she's still battling with the band to get the royalties, which isn't right. and just because brody's voice sound similar to courtney love's doesn't mean she's influenced by her, it may just be her real voice, people sound like other people, it happens. i have a lot more respect for brody than i ever will have for courtney.

Whatever It Takes – A Fistful Of Revolution Lyrics 21 years ago
fist = international sign of demanding a liberation socially, politcally, economically, etc.

"I've seen a rising statue
Next to a crumbling building
And a city scapes call to arms. "

rising statues are when notable political figures have their stautes made and raised. the statue next to a crumbling building means the crumbling building symbolizes the crumbling state of a nation's well-being and wellfare. that the nation is in shambles and the stature (the leader) may be the cause. A city scape calls to arms, means that the people are not happy with the status quo and that a revolution to overtake an incompetant or unjust leader is neccessary.

showing our numbers = protest rally!!!!!!

a fistful of revolution= a brick! they're going to smash the state!

pretty simple song. the meaning is generic, but it expresses a strong feeling with such few words. if you want to hear more political and verbal lyrics, check out anti-flag, chris barker (vocals of whatever it takes) is also the bassist for anti-flag. rock on!

BoySetsFire – Rookie Lyrics 21 years ago
Great song! just shows BSF can sound just as good singing as they do screaming! I love it, it's one of their best.

"drink to pills to shots turns into shock
a habit and a pawn"

well.....guess it's obviously about drugs if you look at those set of words. but if it was anything else, i'd think it was about failure. about a hard descent from greatness at something you could once do so well or loved so much, but now it's gone and you just can't cut it. it definitley relates to a lot of dispair and hopelessness, like nothing you do is ever right or that you can never bounce back. it sounds like a song on depression too. too bad the song has no happy ending :(. the song's like a fallen leader, it sounds like it's about desperation.

Pennywise – Alien Lyrics 21 years ago
such a great song, hear it at the PA system at the skatepark a lot.

real good song on the observation of society. some will feel alienated and wondering why there is so much violence, why is everyone immoral, why do you have to struggle, to claw your way up to a certain station in life and if it's all really worth it? The person in this song had dreams of making it, then sees it's not that easy, that the world is a weird, cruel, and unfair place. the person just needs a release. if there is an actual "alien" as referred to the song. the band is definitley telling him to get the f*ck out of here, because this place sucks!

Operation Ivy – Vulnerability Lyrics 21 years ago
it's about how desensitized we are to violence and crime. We just don't take care of eachother, nor do we care to. Vulnerable because anything bad can happen to anyone, we are all vulnerable to illness, bad luck, death, but no one will help us. the opposite of vulnerability is protection, and we refuse to protect others.

jesse michaels is awesome! writing lyrics like these at 19, i'm sure there are 19 year olds that think that way, but to make it sound this good....wow.

Against Me! – Baby, I'm an Anarchist! Lyrics 21 years ago
eek. well, it's a very accurate description of liberals and anarchists not getting along. Usually liberals would like to participate in protests while staying in arms length with the law, while anarchists don't wish to confrom to these laws because they think they are a nuisance to achieving their goals to be heard and taken into account. liberals will protest on the sidewalk, anarchists will take to the streets. it happens. and i guess the guy has a liberal friend and doesn't think he/she is radical enough to partake in the social revolution they're fighting for. while the liberal finds the anarchist incredibley unruly and shows unnecessary resistance because he/she still has faith in the system.

happens in the activism scene a lot. against me! knows their shizit.

Anti-Flag – No Borders, No Nations Lyrics 21 years ago
"No borders, no nations! No flags, no patriots! whoa oh, whoa oh!"

Means that #2 thinks that borders and nations are unnecessary things that just contribute to nationalism. Nationalism in a sense can be used as a manipulative tool to drive people to go to war against others that aren't even their business. Like the world leaders are telling them how to act and react and they get swamped by all the state run rhetoric telling them who to hate. All this is first done by seperating states with borders, states will start to form a sort of pride that would distinguish them from other states and this pride can be detrimental (see nazi germany in wwii). "No flags, no patriots", because patriots are flag waving people who believe in seperating themselves from others and are willing to die for their government and go to war, etc. Flags are viewed by anti-flag as symbols used to instill the sort of honor in people that would make them impose physical violence in other countries sometimes due to racial tension or foreign policy between governments that just went wrong.

#2 is an awesome lyricist! straight forward lyrics, great views, he just says his opinion out in the open :D. ant-flag rocked the trocadero at the plea for peace tour too. check them out live
