they probably didn't want to go there in the song.
i can understand that. the back story is what it is, though. i think that's more than enough that we got that much. |

that's because they don't have to imply shit. they didn't even have to explain themselves on what that song means, but they did. crazy back story though. |

fucking song has some of the most incredible transitions i've ever heard. not to mention the thematic elements the song explores are gorgeous. from the drums to the harmonics, and the bass fluidly moving around the very simple, subdued structure. |

god dammit this song is fucking unbelievable.
i get a sense of like 80s synth pop-rock a la duran duran, with like an ATTEMPT at utilizing clean vocals (in a very creepy way), and then like fucking NOISE AND STATIC just below it.

this song is incredible, but i have to say, LITERALLY the musical part during "arching before us" makes me choke up. it's such a pretty progression! |

it's just too bad that it never came to be nearly as popular/famous as "Stairway to Heaven". |

what is amazing to me is the fact that, presumably, this song was left off the album because it did not meet this particular band's own standards.
this song is so fucking good, if it had somehow remained unreleased in any form, it would be better than most songs released officially. |

this song seems painfully obvious and direct and forward. it seems like a mockery towards all men who cheat or do things that are immoral (including politicians, doctors, and regular citizens) and try to regain the trust of the ones they wrong. it sounds to me like thom is calling these people all out. |

i keep hearing something about a razor blade....... and i don't think he says "fuck" as many times as this page would have us think. i think some of these lyrics are way off....... |

FUCKING LOL i just watched the video again after coming to this page and reading "he said this song is about his mom" bc i was almost POSITIVE i heard him correctly before even coming to this site for this song, and when i listened again i found i was right: IDIOTS, wes said "this song's called 'my mom hits harder'". i doubt highly that that means he wrote the song ABOUT his mom. i'm guessing that's what's commonly known as a joke....... |

The Decemberists – A Cautionary Song Lyrics

it's an interweaving of prostitution and rape, sort of. she's being defiled on the daily, and she hates it, but does what she feels she must. her involuntary reaction says to fight, to scream, to try to pull away, because they are hurting her and not taking care to actually make it easier for her to feel numb about the whole thing, even though, when it's all over, that's all she feels. but she continues to do it because it is necessary at that time. so it's prostitution and "voluntary" rape. |

i agree, completely. this was what made me search for this song. i won't tell you where i found it, but when i did, i was like "wow this song is pretty good.." which is REALLY funny if you are me and, particularly, found out about this song the way that i did. |

^ yes. but in terms of the lyrics relating to that? i think it's kind of saying that chuck (if he was the one who wrote these lyrics) never wondered or cared about the history of the country; just wanted to fight against the system, always fight against it, instead of trying to learn about it. but now maybe he sees he can't "break the bottle" by fighting it constantly.
something like that. |

not every fucking aspect of a story referred to in a song's lyrics has to be addressed. if one knows the story that is referred to in the song, then so be it. if they know how it ends, fine. that doesn't mean they necessarily got the end result out of the lyrics. sometimes people just pass the word on a song's meanings, and without that, the outcome of the situation may not have been known. no biggie. |
