he used to say "I'm such a coward, such a piss ant, a shit, i shoulda killed you when i had the chance!" that line got me at their show, so then this song fucked up my summer and fall. now it finally comes out on record and he changed all my favorite lines. however the meaning of the song is that on their last album cursive feebly lauded man and cursed religion. on this album they're cursing man from a religious standpoint but the curse of religion is there too. there is no hope. i hate this worldview and wish it wasn't my own. |

this is one of the few redeeming songs on the awful and pathetic "happy hollow" tim and ted attack the church, for the most part, poorly, in their lyrics, after years of attacking themselves quite well. many people who hate the church anyway will have no trouble shaking their fist in the air along to this stuff and ignoring that it's done in an ignorant, immature way. these guys are 32! they sound like they're 16. except for on this song. good points are made. priests choose celibacy for different reasons. i have a friend who is openly gay and is becoming a priest and is choosing celibacy for the same reason a straight man would choose celibacy-- because when you devote your life to such a spiritual lifestyle, you choose to give up certain desires. monks and priests also often give up meat and other things too. obviously the priest in this song chose celibacy without admitting that he was abstaining from relationships with men because he was in a close-minded town who would judge him for being homosexual even though he was choosing to avoid all sex. therefore his commitment to celibacy was not for a purely spiritual reason but also a reason of fear. and perhaps he even only became a priest because he knew he could never settle down to a normal life in his town, with heterosexual marriage and babies and such. so his abstinence is threatened by the return of an attractive young man who openly admits to being gay, even if only when drunk. this is one of the few songs on the album that is actually a portrait of the way one of these religious people in the town actually would think, one of the few songs that offers any sympathy to why anyone would be religious. its fine to oppose the ideology of the church, but one ought to consider that those involved in the church are sometimes involved for personal reasons which are good for them. the priest's guilt in this situation is quite sad. he "knows this is wrong because [he's] told this is wrong" but he doesnt even do anything except talk with a friend and fall asleep by his side! what's wrong, to him, is the feelings he feels. he is coming from a situation where honesty is not encouraged, a church where sin is not openly discussed. what "threatens the sanctuary" is not that he is gay but that he has feelings that may violate his celibacy. i feel that tim is attacking in this song not just church views on homosexuality, but also church views on celibacy. at least he should be. i think this song does beyond tim's control. crap. i'm not good at being long winded. i only have one more thing i want to say, and that's that when he says "the feelings i tucked away threatened this sanctuary" i really want those feelings to not only be sexual urges but also be the feelings to question theology and church doctrines, to have the oppurtunity to be open to "new ideologies" not just about sex but about many other elements in the church. |

i like to think when he laughs at the end it's a "HA HA HA HA ha oh" if you listen closely, his laughter cuts off immediately. i'm sure it's just cos thats the way i want to hear it, but i see that part as him crying out such a blasphemous idea and laughing at it as evilly as possible then suddenly, "oh crap what did i just say" type thing. i have a hard time believing Brock is an atheist honestly. he Loves God too much and just doesnt say it exactly. he challenges people, their idea of god etc and it's an idea that needs to be challenged. i also really like that it's "this" devil's workday. he's refering to one little devil going about doing devilish things. i'm sure he doesnt actually thing all the things he suggests doing in the song are good ideas, but some of them are. i heard one time that people are satanists to challenge christianity. maybe in this day and age to serve Truth and Christ you should become an Satanist because people need a wake up call. |

to me this song is about the book "the garden of eden" by Ernest Hemingway. if you are planning to read this book, please do not read the rest of this post, as i give away the secret surprise at the end and will ruin it for you. The character David calls his wife Catherine "Devil" as a term of affection, a nickname. Catherine wants to be respected like men are in society so she tries different things like cutting her hair short or asking her husband to pretend he's the woman when they are in bed. David is a writer and the book takes place while he and Catherine are on their honeymoon. he writes in the morning while she is asleep. eventually she becomes so jealous of his ability to be productive that she does something very cruel to him. this angers him greatly and he says things like "i wish your mom and dad had not met each other and made you" he doesn't actually threaten to hit her, but the sentiment is similar. there's also stuff about her dad, and her having her dad's money and stuff (daddy's payday is not enough) just read the book. it will make sense to you. |

i think the line "if i'm a dog then you're a bitch" means if he is a male dog, she is a female dog, and they are both just animals. he saw her as this beautiful porcelain, but when he had her, he couldn't see her as an untouchable beauty anymore. he had to see her as a real person. that's why he says "maybe i need fantasy" as in the chase its whats more important to him than the actual girl. it would seem this is true for our incredibly promiscuous rivers of nowadays. so sad, indeed. |
