The Beach Boys – Surfin' U.S.A. Lyrics 5 years ago
Side note: Charles Manson actually played and sang with the Beach Boys for two concerts when Brian quit touring and because Brian didn't like him he got canned and replaced by Glenn Campbell. Yuppers, when you play "6 degrees of seperation" you can go from Charles Manson to Glenn Campbell in just 2 degrees via Briam Wilson not touring for several years with the Beach Boys! (so technically Manson and Campbell were both "Beach Boys"!

The Chipmunks – Witch Doctor Lyrics 5 years ago
This much beloved children's song is actually a BDSM song! The Witch Doctor was a guy's name that was in the community back then and he was a well known on the back pages DOM.
The ooo, eee, ooo, ah ah, ting, tang, walla, walla, bing, bang is the bare butt paddling of the submissive who after a perfect BDSM Dom/sub session is then very much in love with the guy that paddles her past the "Ting, Tang" point of it stinging to the "walla, walla" part of enjoying it! and then "Bing, bang" she loves you! Think of this next time you are at a little kids birthday party and they are playing it and get that gleem in your eye as you look at the girl you wanna go somplace and paddle into submission and your heart!

The Trashmen – Surfin' Bird Lyrics 5 years ago
This is one of those dual meaning songs. As has been said, it is about giving the middle finger because at that time in American history a teen could get busted by juvenile authorities for flipping the bird to any adult. So "the bird id the word" was a cry to end the unlawful and un-Constitutional locking up of a minor by just ANY adult saying that they had done this! It was often used as a way for a Christian fundamentalist to punish a gay child (often even their own). The second meaning is that the song is abut Masterbation because also at that time to say the word "Cock" not in a reference to a male chicken was a crime too! (remember the 7 words you could not say on TV?) and if you listen to the pace of the song, the rumbling growling part, and watch the stage show of it (it's on YouTube) you see the guy going down ral low (as in getting to the short strokes) and then the mumble grumble growl babble as he emulates coming and then strutting around non-stop in a circle (Emulating the pride of the first to come in the circle jerk) and the pop up and all the excited flustering strut off stage!

BOTH meanings are quite true!

As a side note this is one of the three songs used several times in the radio challenges of "What do these three songs have in common" along with Turning Japanese by the Vapors and "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood which are both quite obviously about masturbation!

So The Bird actually IS the word!

And this was a liberating song for a woman to say that she could want and enjoy something that was based in being physically attracted! (as a side note Chaka was quite the Dominatrix!) This is about the guys wanting to look perfect and toned to win her desires for their physical appearance! Quite the reversal for most guys!

The Electric Prunes – I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night Lyrics 5 years ago
"Guy" didn' lose girl. The guy was in Vietnam and could not bear awakening from the dreams of the girl he loves and still loves him (as far as he knows). The writer said it was from a letter he got from a buddy tyhat was in country who wanted reasured that the girl still loved and missed him since he'd had no letters in weeks from her. This buddy then came home in satin as was said in that day, so his friend never got to write him back.
(See Knights in White Satin")
So only vets serving in actual war will ever understand all the meaning in "I had too much to Dream"!

This song is from my era. It is another Vietnam song. The guy doesn't want to face waking up again in country without the girl he loves! (As told by the writer in an interview, though I can't find it on the net right now!) It was based on a letter from a friend who was in country. The friend came home in white satin as the saying went then! (Dead) So it's a tribute to yet another "Knight in White Satin"!
It's not quite as trivial as just a guy and girl broke up and now he regrets it. They never broke up, he was stolen from her by the war! Vets get it, others never will!

The Temptations – Cloud Nine Lyrics 5 years ago
"Cloud Nine" was Heroin! He saw no life worth leading and had seen nothing of value from his childhood. Heroin gave him that rush of absolute "perfection" and the total escape from all reality.
This is an upbeat song about the downbeat of ghetto life! It is a classic move to make the musical opposite of the lyrical in meanings. Many great hits are just exactly that, the opposite of the music!
Makes me think of another song about heroin addiction that very few people ever get and think is a love song, so they have it played at their wedding reception!
Check out:

Billy Joel – We Didn't Start the Fire Lyrics 5 years ago
@[slagonia:27509] "EVIL" by a christian definition? Because NOTHING in this song refers to "EVIL" but to controversies of their times! The human mind of each individual is the ONLY source of what you refer to as "EVIL" so basically ALL evil is of your own minds creation of perspective! What one person might think of as an appropriate action another thinks of as "EVIL" take for example the act of circumcision! Now did you think of it as "EVIL"? Wait, did you only think of male circumcision or of female? Or did your religion define for you as to it being a "vow of devotion" as in the male circumcision being a "vow to Good" and a female circumcision as a mutilation of her reproductive organs? Do you see where the concept of an "EVIL" is of your own mind's construct?

Billy Joel – We Didn't Start the Fire Lyrics 5 years ago
@[commiebij:27508] Because "the fire" is human controversy and our addiction to it! All of the things, people, and events in the song were CONTROVERIES in their time and forwards in time! Controversy is not "EVIL" and evil has nothing to do with this song. So I have to wonder why it is a fixation in your mind? Has Christianity and their definitions of "evils" led you to think of everything not puppies, kittens, and your god as "Evil"? Please try to use a REAL open mind when diving into the meanings of song'sas music is the international conveyance of emotions as mathematics is the international conveyance of logic! (notice I did NOT say "language" but rather "conveyance"!

Billy Joel – Keeping The Faith Lyrics 5 years ago
This is another Billy Joel song with many historical markers (Much like "We didn't Start the Fire) as well as references to HIS actual life. He says "I'm not ashamed to say the wild boys were my friends" in reference both to the novel/film "The Wild Boys" and as that is about a gay gang it is his real life reference that he got his New York start in the gay community! (As in his bio-theme song Piano Man is about playing in a gay piano bar!)
"Til the music set me on fire" refers to the Hendrix song "come on baby Light my Fire" as is shown by the official video having in the court gallery Jimmy Hendrix as he appeared at Woodstock. (I was there!)
"Matador boots, only Flagg Brothers had them with the Cuban Heels" refers to the typical stage outfit of Sergio Mendez & Brazil 66 as well as bob Cuban and the in men and so much Cuban, Puerto Rican, and South American influence to some of the Billy Joel sound! (Also that the "upscale" shoe store for most stage wear was a store named "Flagg Brothers Shoes" in Brooklyn!) And again in the video we see a reference to "West Side Story" with a dance troupe routine from the play!
The "Shark skin jacket with the velvet collar" is the reference to stage wear of Sha na na who did the referred to song "The Duke of Earl"
The "Red haired girl in a Chevrolet" refers to Lucille Ball and her show "I Love Lucy" being sponsored by Chevrolet and that brought the Cuban sound to him as a child via Desi Arnez (I Love Lucy husband Ricky)
The line "Learned how to dance and still look tough" refers to John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever" as does the "stick ball" reference, etc.
"Learned about sex, but not enough" is referring to the Aides crisis and those he lost in his life. Also the "good ole day weren't always that good, and tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems" refers to the hit TV show "Happy Days" and it showing that teen struggles are time/era universal.
As I've said, this whole song is his strolls through the events and influences throughout his live up to then and that absorbing everything thrown at you is "keeping the Faith" in the music world. The video has so very many portrayals of icons that it is a whole presentation of it's own to compliment the song! Nowhere in the song does he reference The Supremes yet he shows them in their final stage outfit of gold lame when the judge says "that's not appropriate dress for a courtroom" Watch it and see if you can spot some music icons!

Carl Douglas – Kung Fu Fighting Lyrics 5 years ago
The meaning to the song was to make fun of all of the Martial Arts movies and TV shows that suddenly sprang to existence from Bruce Lee and his popularity in that time. (Especially since Bruce made his movies super cheap as a snark to the studio's that would not consider him a true "actor" just because he was oriental!) They even used two of the character's names from his movies! (Funky Billy Chin and Little Sammy Choung) so it's a spoof of a spoof about being RACIST targeted at the very huge midwestern RACIST white community!
So it's like putting a quail into a chicken into a duck into a turkey into a goose!
Also because a Black man was doing a song about a yellow man fooling the white man!

If for no other great reason I shall always LOVE this song for playing on the RACISTS!

The Buggles – Video Killed the Radio Star Lyrics 6 years ago
@weezerific:cutlery Some of the true irony is that it was the first video on MTV and as well the last video on MTV when they dropped the "radio style" VJ format and went to all of the reality shows and such. So even on MTV it "was the first, it was the last one!"
Also this song was actually recorded five years before MTV began!
Another fine Irony is that Mike from The Monkee's was the major funder and promoter of the beginning of MTV.
Now here's the kicker, the song is about a time long before MTV when there were radio programs. Shows on the AM radio that were sound only plays written just for radio. They were the introduction of "Soap Opera's" that were sponsored by the laundry soap companies for the housewives to listen to while doing the housework, and especially the laundry and ironing! George Orwell was a VERY famous "Radio Star"! (Ever hear of his most famous ever radio shows called "The War of The worlds" which caused public panic all up and down the east coast when the listeners thought that it was an actual news report of Martians landing at a small town in Connecticut! Orwell even said several times that it was a fictional radio play during the live broadcast, but his writing and his performance was so very powerful that widespread panic broke out. The Television came into the American life and the "radio stars" were just voice overs for the cartoons because they didn't "look" like the characters they were so known for. The reference to '52 is about the man who discovered the FM (frequency modulation) that brought forth the TV signals whom committed suicide in 1952 after being driven to financial ruin by RCA who then produced the first TV sets and owned all of the earliest broadcast stations. ABC (American Broadcast Company) was wholly owned by RCA originally. Also a correct line is "put the blame on VTR (not VCR) because it was about radio to television and VTR is Video Tape Recording. Though the switch from music radio to MTV was partly due to the invention of the VCR and bands that would do a music video that could be bought just like their albums on vinyl!
Also in 1964 through late 1965 a publishing group tried to bring back the "radio play" as an art form but again RCA bought them out and then killed it! (Find the old recording of "ChickenMan" Mild mannered shoe salesman Benton Harbour who was secretly a superhero! (With of course the ironic reference to Benton Harbor Michigan where they were from!)
As another bit of irony the same thing happened in the silver screen movie industry when silent movie stars couldn't make the switch to talkies because their voices and accents prevented them from the switch. (reference the success of Bette Davis who made the change and several of the bombshell girls of that era that couldn't because of their accents or even a couple whom spoke very little English!) So yes it is about the irony of how each entertainment technology takes over from the previous. That is why Mike himself chose this five year old not much known song for the FIRST video on MTV and why the later CEO of MTV when changing the format made it also the LAST song on the VJ format!
The song is about the change of technology and the irony of being a "STAR" isolated in one technology or adapting to the change!

The verses that they didn't put on the public 12" singles were very VERY descriptive! It is truly about the typical back room at the gay club hook up that one guy wants to be something more! And in the clubz version it DOES say "now drop down on your knee's and watch out, here I COME! Now spin me right round, right baby round for the record baby. Right round!"

It's ALL about the time in the dark room (back room) at the gay club!

As a side note, I remember all that 80's dark room sex at a club in East StLouis called "Faces"! I'll never see chain link fencing in quite the same way as str8 people do! And I'm glad!
