Thrice – The Long Defeat Lyrics 7 years ago
Just a quick note on the lyrics. I believe the lyrics actually are "I lie wrecked and WRITHING from these falls"
Writhing is defined as: respond with great emotional or physical discomfort to (a violent or unpleasant feeling or thought). It makes more sense giving the context of the lyrics.

Anyway there is likely some alluding to Tolkeins Long Defeat.

To me this song is perfect. Both musically and lyrically, they were able to create a great contrast of feelings. It starts out with this optimistically beautiful riff. And then drops into more pessimistic lyrics and then again the tempo kicks up a tad and the lyrics become more optimistic again before going back to a feeling of dread. I feel perhaps they were trying to make a statement that there will trials and tribulations in life but also some beautiful aspects of life. There should always be hope. But in the end all that hope may be for nothing because evil and wrong doings of the world can erase all that was good. Perhaps referring to the Long Defeat. The end of the song musically turns darker and less optimistic as well as he contiually sings together we'll fight the long defeat.

Anyway. Terrific song. The imagery they created in this one was perfect.
