Prince had been at the top of his field for a long time when he wrote this song. He wrote it as a note to himself that now is the time to keep it going to stay on top. Have you heard the phrase "tooting your own horn" He says "You have the horn so why don't you blow it" The cream is a reference of "Cream of the crop" the word "cop" means to "obtain" Hw wants to obtain his place back on top where he had been for so long. Prince himself actually said that he wrote this song while he was looking in the mirror. There is a clip of him while playing an acoustic version, he stopped and said kind of jokingly "You know I was looking in the mirror when I wrote this song" the audience laughed and then he said "No, seriously, I did!" This song makes so much more sense when you know this, and it has become one of my favorites. We all need positive affirmations! |
