Chris Cornell – Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart Lyrics 2 days ago
@[chefgroovy:20633] it's not a woman.. It's his greatest love.. Heroin. This song breaks my heart. When he mentions the sun (in any song) he's talking about the high he gets from heroin. When I first checked out these lyrics, I realised he was using again.. So sad.

Eagles – Hotel California Lyrics 7 months ago
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
=
The dark highway is a journey, it starts with colitas (weed), but it leads to the shimmering light (a stronger drug), and he stops for the night (journey over).

There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
'This could be heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

=

Only one drug is referred to as "her".. And, you'd probably need a candle to use her too.. Heroin. You cook heroin in a spoon, using a candle.. hence showing him the way. Intravenous heroin is supposed to be the most intense (at the time) drug experience, showing him the way, on the highway he's started with colitas..
The voices down the corridor are previous addicts, warning him of what's to come..

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (any time of year) you can find it here

=

OK, weed back then would of been seasonal, whilst heroin is available all year round and there was plenty of it...

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

=

People are getting rich off heroin,
People are enjoying heroin,
People are using it to have fun, people are using it to forget pain..

So I called up the Captain
'Please bring me my wine
He said, "we haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty-nine
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say"

=

Basically, alcohol does nothing now, compared to heroin.
And you wake up in the night wanting heroin...

Mirrors on the ceiling
The pink champagne on ice
And she said, 'we are all just prisoners here, of our own device
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast

=

Not sure about the first two lines, but "we are all just prisoners here, of our own device" definitely speaks of addiction, proper addicts, who don't care that they're addicted.
The masters chambers is the place where the heroin runs free, a place a true rock band would have access too (if they choosed). The feast is all the heroin you can take, but, they're chasing the dragon.. They're stabbing it with their "steely knives" (needles) but they just can't kill the beast.. They're not getting that original high.

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
'Relax' said the night man
'We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave

=

This verse is just about him trying to become sober (the place I was before), but realising he's addicted to heroin (you can never leave..)...

Yeah?

Nine Inch Nails – Closer Lyrics 8 months ago
Ahem....
This is about one particular person.
Before I say who, let's all agree on something, NIN is dark, yes? Really dark.
Okay, so:
You let me violate, desecrate, penetrate, complicate you..
Key points : you let, as in this person is allowing this to happen. And desecrate.. You can only desecrate a holy place, a tomb.. Or a dead body.
Help me, I'm broken, got no soul etc.. I'm a tortured person, the only thing that works for me is this.. (the only thing that gets me off..)
I wanna Fuck you like an animal.. Obvious.
I wanna feel you from the inside.. I want every part of you.. Literally.
My existence is flawed.. I am broken.
You get me closer to God.. I get real power doing these things..
You can have my isolation and hate etc.. He's taking his issues out on this person..
Tear down my reason, make me perfect etc..
I'm out of control, doing this makes me feel right..
Okay.. So here's the big hint, the last verse is sung so quietly.. I don't understand the above the trees bit, but, "in my stomach"..
I drink the honey from your hive, your the reason I'm alive....
He has eaten the person..
This song is about Jeffrey Dahmer..

Soundgarden – Kickstand Lyrics 8 months ago
Cocks and motorcycles? You losers..
His mother's said it's alright? About his cock? Are you even thinking?
Let's apply the old "if you don't know what a soundgarden song is about, it's about heroin" logic..
Kickstand = bent spoon to cook heroin in
Getting loose and throwing up? Somethings wrong with the spoon.
It has the juice to fill his cup because, hello.. Heroin in the spoon..
My mother says it's alright /only life. In heroin circles a "mother superior" is a veteran junkie, because of the length of their "habit", it's a thing, I'm not making it up.. So the veteran junkie is telling him it's ok, it's the only life..
Other than that, I don't care to put more effort into this song because it's shite, it has to be the worst soundgarden song ever...

Soundgarden – Spoonman Lyrics 8 months ago
Erg.. Awesome song, but yes, if you're a heroin addict at a shooting gallery, the spoonman is going to save you (with his hands). His hands are also going to "come together" (rubs hands greedily), and you're going to be together with his plan, because you WANT to buy his drugs.. Also all your friends are skeletons because they've died from heroin overdoses, and all your friends are brown and red because heroin is brown when you buy it, and then red just before you shoot it (in the syringe, as you pull back, just before you shoot).

Brown and red gets referenced again in the day i tried to live.. (blood and mud), with all goes other pigs (shooting gallery)..

Wake up people..

Soundgarden – Jesus Christ Pose Lyrics 8 months ago
Nice.. Given the whole heroin thing, as others have commented on with slaves and bulldozers and burden in my hand. This would appear to be about a heroin dealer telling the addict that,
A, I have no heroin for you (addict throws his arms out...) or,
B, I'm not selling heroin anymore (addict throws his arms out...)

Staring at me like I'm driving the nails.. I'm not making you shoot up.. (nails represent syringes) I sell the drugs, but it's your fault you're addicted.

Would it pain your more to walk on water than to wear a crown of thorns? =
From other posts on this site I believe every reference Chris makes to water is about heroin (that's what it looks like in a syringe), so to walk on water, is to rise above the heroin (the addiction) and to use it. Most dealers only sell to support their own habit.

I just wonder if this stuff is written from a 3rd person perspective or from real life experience..

From what I can see, the vast majority of soundgarden songs are about heroin.. I still love it all though..

It's about hanging around with junkies, and then realising you're one.
"Now I know why you've been shaking " I understand withdrawal.
" Now I know why you've been taking " I understand stealing to support my habit, because withdrawal is so bad.
Everything else in the song is basically about being around jerks (other addicts) who don't understand him....

@[frost37:14561] ok cool, the genius of these songs is definitely in people being able to interpret them in their own way and find personal meaning in them. I always thought this song was about just what you have said, until I read the highest rated interpretation of "burden in my hand" on this site, it was a light bulb moment for me. Let's just take this in the context of the album as well, Superunknown is a DARK album. It's themes are despair etc.. Why is this song so empowering then? Because it's not.. It's about the only happy place you have left as a heroin addict... You've survived shooting up, and you feel amazing.
Creatively amazing..
Get yourself afraid, alone, self contained, self control, control. Sounds like the rules of surviving a seriously deadly addiction to me..
Please check out "burden in my hand" on this site. The metaphores described in that description unlock a lot of soundgarden spngs;
Water = heroin
Sun = high
Snake = syringe

... Etc, etc
P. S. I'm enjoying a this debate with someone who has intelligent arguments too make BTW..

Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics 1 year ago
I don't want to offend, but:

I bet this song means a lot, to a lot of people. I think it's the best song ever written, for my generation.

This song is a riddle, the best example of an artist engaging with their audience. Chris would never tell you what it's about for 2 reasons:
1. An artist isn't going to tell you what their art is about, you'll stop thinking about it, stop coming back to it to try and figure it out. If he told you what it's about, when you hear it, you'll just be like "oh yeah that song that's about ******", not "man I LOVE this song, but what the heck is it about?"
2. In the first verse he states that in his eyes lies his "disgrace", so he's not going to say what it's about, because it's about his big secret.

Also, it's sung with so much raw emotion and power, it has to be about something.

So:

In my eyes, indisposed,
In disguises as no one knows:
In my eyes, that aren't paying attention to the current situation, they're indisposed, I'm thinking of something else.

Hides the face, lies the snake
The sun in my disgrace:
Hides the following:
The face: a mask (?) to protect the secret.
The snake: this represents a syringe (it injects you)
The sun: my high, my happy place.
My disgrace: obviously this is a disgraceful secret.

Boiling heat, summer stench
'Neath the black the sky looks dead:
Not too sure, but I think this part is about withdrawal, hot and sweaty, dead sky is depression.

Call my name through the cream
And I'll hear you scream again:
Trying to get through to me won't work, you'll be screaming my name in frustration.

I'll get to what I think the black hole sun is at the end.

Stuttering, cold and damp
Steal the warm wind tired friend:
Once again, I think this about withdrawal, and I guess a person who cares and is exhausted by trying to help, has stolen what will make him better.

Times are gone for honest men
And sometimes far too long for snakes:
I used to be an honest man, but now I'll lie, etc. To get my fix, and sometimes it's just too long between snakes (syringes, hence the withdrawal ).

In my shoes, a walking sleep:
Heroin users often fall asleep (sort of) standing.

And my youth I pray to keep:
I don't want to die.

Heaven sent hell away:
I need my high (heaven) to send my hell (withdrawal) away.

No one sings like you anymore:
No other drug is as good as you, nothing hits the spot like heroin.

OK, so then you get the chorus, twice. Won't you come, reinforced.
Then the chanting starts, like he's summoning some evil God (this is probably were the occult peeps get confused).
Also, at this point, it's important to factor the music itself.
A true masterpiece isn't just lyrics, or music, it's every part of the song. This song is an example of true creative genius.
Here the song is in crescendo, it's peaking.
Then he stops chanting, and the guitar solo starts. This is important as well. He's stopped chanting /begging for the black hole sun to appear, why? Because he's got it. It's the perfect place for the awesome guitar solo.

Before I go on; what is the black hole sun?
The sun, as I've said, is his high, his perfect place. The black hole, it's the hollow point at the end of the needle that delivers his high. And it washes away the rain /pain.

So now, he's had his fix. Picture a desperate junky shooting up, what does his head do?

Hang my head,
Drown my fear:
My head drops, my fear is gone (drowned in the water (let me drown anyone?))
It says on this sight "till you all just disappear"
Isn't it:"tell you all just disappear"? Thought that's what it said in the album cover.
Anyway, go away and leave me, I'm not worthy. Something like that anyway. I feel like shit because I'm an addict, go away.

But then... The chorus, the chanting, it starts all over again... Because he's addicted, he needs to start begging for the black hole sun again.

Go and watch the film clip again, with this perspective. The people are grinning idiots oblivious to his secret. The thing in the air sucking everything up, it's like staring down a long tube. And it's sucking up red blobs (blood cells), just like when a user pulls back on the syringe (the baby in the pram is a white blood cell) and destroying everything (like addiction). Then, at the crescendo, it's not sucking, it's blowing all over Chris, and he's loving it... The syringe has been pushed back, he's got his high. Just look at it and see.

Just what I think, but it makes sense, especially when I learnt Chris was a heroin addict.
Go check out the best meaning for burden in my hand on this sight...
It doesn't change how awesome the song is either, it just explains it.

Unfortunately, I think this song is about drugs. I didn't for years, I agreed with the whole life thing.. But that line at the end, were it steals your soul, it never sat right with me. I remember listening to this for the first time (that's how much of an impact soundgarden had on me, I don't remember the first time listening many songs at all) I was so into it.. The limitless feeling it tells you have, then, at the end, you lose your soul. I was like wait, why? Why so negative after so much positive energy?
After recently learning that Chris Cornell was a heroin addict, I've taken that into account when trying to decipher some of the most cryptic and mysterious music ever written. From what I can see, he often refers to heroin as water. So....
All of the if this isn't something, doesn't mean it's not opposite lines create a sense of limitless possibilities, yes.
While the river's high: when you got good heroin.
The superunkown is the point after you've shot up and realised that you're still alive, that you feel amazing and capable of anything. So, yes, the song is a celebration of life, but at the end, you're addicted.

Soundgarden – Mailman Lyrics 1 year ago
Hmm.. It does seem to be about wanting to shoot your boss, except:
1. Kisses turned to spit in my face. Well, your boss never kissed you, or showed you any love...
2. A future so holy without me. They're still alive whoever they are, so either he's dead (suicide) or he's moved on...

I think it's a very personal song, and can't be explained with generalisations.
I think it's a letter to a specific person (the song is the mailman), a person who perhaps he had a very bad break up with, that put him on a self destructive path, but a path that provides inspiration to write very personal and artistic music.
So I thinks like, look at me now bitch, thanks for the inspiration that made me famous, and the bad habits that go along with that lifestyle.

If this isn't what you see
It doesn't make you blind
Yea, if this doesn't make you feel
It doesn't mean you've died:

In this place, I'm seeing/feeling something. Because you're not seeing /feeling the same thing, don't mean shit.. I'm seeing /feeling it.

Where the river's high
Where the river's high

Lots of water... Lots of Heroin. Chris Cornell refers to heroin as water.

If you don't want to be seen
Well you don't have to hide
And if you don't want to believe
Well you don't have to try to feel alive, yea:

Do your own thing, do what makes you happy, you don't have to do heroin to get your fix.

Alive in the superunknown:

I just shot up, I survived, I'm high and anything is possible.

If this doesn't make you free
It doesn't mean you're tied
If this doesn't take you down
It doesn't mean you're high;

Heroin might not be your drug of choice...

You know what.. Blah blah blah... All it is Is this:

I just shot up, I feel amazing, anything is possible on this state of mind.
If you don't feel the same after shooting up, it's not my problem..

All the lines of the verses simply reinforce the first word:
Take
Break
Share
BUT only if you want to.

Take (what?)
Break (I've taken it, now break...)
Share (share your experiences about it, or misery loves company (encourage others to "take it")).

So you've done that, but don't bring your shit over to me. I'm enjoying my version of this scenario (just bear with me).

Cry
Hate
Pray

Cry: what have you done?
Hate: you hate what you've done.
Pray: only God can save you now..

So you've done that, but don't bring your shit over to me. I'm enjoying my version of this scenario (just bear with me).

Cry
Hate
Take

Cry: still crying
Haye: still Hating
Take: stealing to support your habit

So you've done that, but don't bring your shit over to me. I'm enjoying heroin, because I can afford it, if you can't, piss off.

Soundgarden – Let Me Drown Lyrics 1 year ago
To me, the first verse seems to signify shooting up.. The stretching is the tourniquet, he's going to the holy land (getting high) ..
Burn the candle deep inside is about summoning the courage to commit to such a harmful act.

So give up to greed, you don't have to feed me: go live in the materialistic society, you don't support my habit, I do.
Give up to fate, you don't have to need me: just let life happen without me, I choose this life.
So let it go (etc. Etc..) leave me alone!
Drown me in you: I'll die with my addiction (happily), (Chris Cornell refers to heroin as water frequently).

Slip down darkness to the mouth, damn the water, burn the wine: succumb totally to your addiction, damn heroin, destroy alcohol (the legal alternative).

So throw it away, you don't have to take me
Make no mistakes I am what you make me:
Throw away your perceptions of addiction, but you still don't have to accept me, I am whatever you think I am (but it doesn't matter to me.. Successful rock star that I am)

Drown me in you: I want to die of a heroin overdose (?), or.. Give me all the heroin, as much as I can take..

I see you turn around and burning down
The feeling starts to sink
I feel the hurt surround me
Please dissolve me
She's resolved to be

I see you looking at me angrily,
My high is wearing off,
The hurt returns,
I want to die,
She (who?) left because of this...

So heal my wounds without a trace
And seal my tomb without my face
I'm going to the lonely place:

I'll take more heroin to feel better,
But I'll probably die just another junkie,
No one knows how I feel.

The rest just reinforces the earlier statements of leaving him to his addiction.
