To me, it sounds like the end of Five Years. Which was a pretty dark song as well. End of the world stuff.

David Bowie – Breaking Glass Lyrics 4 years ago
@[Sparticjs774:30661] The Berlin Trilogy is actually Low, Heroes, and Lodger. Very interesting period when Bowie was trying to break some bad habits.
Station to Station, although it has some of my favorite tracks, was before he decided to kick the drugs (or try to anyway, he had many relapses) In fact in interviews he has stated that he doesn't even remember recording most of the album. I find it interesting that he was able to pump out that caliber of material in that state. I feel that the Station to Station era was the closest we came to losing him the way we had lost many great musicians to drugs. Berlin was a new beginning for him and I feel that is why the "trilogy" sound very experimental.

Really digging this song, and this whole album really. Just recently started listening to some of Bowie's later albums, (always loved his early work though).

@[BabyCharmander:27244] In reply to your first paragraph. The answer is yes. Bowie wrote lots of songs about drugs, and on drugs. Hell, he didn't even remember recording most of Station to Station. He kicked most of his habits in the early 80's, but I bet there was a lot of bleeding effect in his later work. He was lucky to make it out of the 70's alive and he knew it, I think that's why he was such a happy and upbeat, live and love life to the fullest kind of guy.

David Bowie – Fly Lyrics 6 years ago
Sounds like the protagonist hates his home life, even if some people feel the typical house and kids thing is a "life that sweet", he finds it unbearable and is crying in his car. Maybe he is dying for the weekend because the weekend is when he gets to have fun? Maybe he feels his life is so miserable it's killing him, so he is dying for the weekend? Maybe he is literally dying for the weekend.

"Down in the backstreet the skinny get cries
Bad judge saturday another life line"
This line sounds like maybe a drug deal in the back street was a bad judgement call, maybe he overdosed and needs "another life line", on a Saturday, so he is dying for the weekend.
The line "I can fly" could reference the feeling of flying some users get when high.

It is David Bowie, and as a superfan I've come to believe that if a Bowie song even remotely seems to reference drugs, then it is probably about drugs.

Miss you Bowie, you are alien, you are genius, you are never forgotten among we mortals.

Another track off of the album Hours. A lot of the songs were created for the video game Omikron : Nomad Soul.....maybe the Nomad Soul is the lonely soul?

Im assuming this was an instrumental written for Omikron, the video game Bowie created, as most of the songs on the Hours album were. I've never played the game, but this song has an oriental feel to it.....perhaps it coincides with an oriental theme in the game at some point?

Only Bowie wasn't tremendously famous at this time. This so was written at a point where Bowie thought he would be a one hit wonder with "Space Oddity". It was not until the Ziggy album did he really become super famous.

I read that David Bowie said it was a fan/groupie perspective directed towards Ziggy Stardust....considering the song was originally written for the Ziggy album it certainly fits and is what I choose to believe...
Addressing the comments saying that it is a homosexual reference....well, he never said wether the fan/groupie was a guy or girl, and considering the era of Bowie's career in which it was written, i suppose it is totally possible. Ambiguity was Bowie's specialty! Love that man!

David Bowie – Ziggy Stardust Lyrics 7 years ago
Not sure it matters how old the comment is, still a stage name is a name an actor/performer uses professionally. A character is a part a performer plays. For example, An actor named Michael Douglas played a popular character called Beetlejuice, but that was not his stage name, he also played a character named Batman or Bruce Wayne, still, not his stage name.....his stage name is Michael Keaton. He changed his professional name because we all know another well known actor named Michael Douglas. David Jones changed his professional name to David Bowie because of another well known musician named Davy Jones (of the Monkees), thus, his stage name was born, and Ziggy was merely a character, Aladin Sane, a character, the Thin White Duke.....a character.

Also, if you have a link to where I can see him play his guitar left-handed, I'd love to see that....interesting.

David Bowie – Suffragette City Lyrics 7 years ago
Taken out of context this song could mean just about anything. But one day I listened to the album and thought about the story it told and tried to figure out how this song fits in.

The placement of the song between Ziggy Stardust (the kids kill the man) and Rock 'n' Roll Suicide (he kills himself?) is confusing.

So I thought about the conundrum of how could the kids kill Ziggy, but Ziggy also kill himself as well? And what does Suffragette City in between have to do with it?

Then I read all of your comments about a heroin connection and it hit me!

Ziggy dies in Ziggy Stardust, but how? The kids killed the man? With what? Maybe they gave him heroin. Fans often give their idols gifts of drugs and/or alcohol in appreciation.
Perhaps this song is referencing his last ride/adventure on the stuff. Suffragette is symbolizing something feminine, something he loves, and he loves the heroin, and he loves the heroin the kids gave him. Maybe this last adventure was literal, or maybe it was in his head....doesn't matter, because it's almost over in the next and last song.

So the kids killed him by giving him the drugs, but he essentially killed himself because he voluntarily took the drugs, and this song is the last wild ride before the end.

Makes perfect sense to me....lol

How bout the Santa Monica version? Don't know what he says there....he lost track in the first verse!

submissions
David Bowie – Suffragette City Lyrics 7 years ago
I have thought about this before as well, lol! Here is my theory.

The last 3 songs are Ziggy Stardust, Suffragette City, then Rock 'n' Roll Suicide, right?

Ziggy dies in Ziggy Stardust, but how? The kids killed the man? With what? Maybe they gave him drugs. Since many believe Suffragette City to be about heroin (Henry), I can only assume that this was his last big trip before he dies, the suffragette's symbolize something he loves, heroin. So the kids kill him by giving him drugs, but then the last song is Rock 'n' Roll Suicide because he essentially did kill himself by accepting and taking the drugs given him.

Just my interpretation...

David Bowie – John, I'm Only Dancing Lyrics 7 years ago
"Well, Annie's pretty neat, she always eats her meat
Joe is awful strong, bet your life he's putting us on"
(Joe is secretly bisexual but puts on a tough guy act to throw people off, but hey, he's at this party, this chick Annie is kinda neat, so he will play the part and dance with her)

"John, I'm only dancing
She turns me on, but I'm only dancing"
(Joe wants John, who is his secret lover, to know that he is only dancing with Annie, although she does turn him on because he is bisexual and he has heard she is a sure thing because she ALWAYS eats her meat)

"Oh shadow love was quick and clean, life's a well-thumbed machine
I saw you watching from the stairs, you're everyone that ever cared"
(Joe explains how their love-making has to be in the shadows and kept a secret, and that they have to be quick and clean about it, leaving no evidence of their meetings. Well-thumbed means frequent handling so this tells me that they make love frequently and have gotten very good at keeping their secret. Joe sees John watching him dance with Annie from the stairs and reassures Joe that he values their relationship above all others as he feels John is the only one to have really ever cared for him.)

I meant to add that because of the content of the song, I feel the encounter was sexual or erotic in some way, do I think that Ziggy was raped by the Starman? Maybe....

David Bowie – Moonage Daydream Lyrics 7 years ago
So many interesting views on this song, who can say who is right at this point? The euphemisms are quite erotic and why not? Ziggy was an erotic creature, androgynous and beautiful, desirable to both men and women. A very sexy song.

As for my own personal take on this song. Because of where this song is placed on the album, I see something different. We already know we only have 5 years left, correct? Think about the song that comes after Moonage Daydream, Starman, where Ziggy starts proclaiming the coming of the starman. But how does he know about the Starman?

My conclusion is that Moonage Daydream is the point where the Starman has contacted Ziggy and chose him to be the prophet to prepare the earth for the coming of the Starman. How did he communicate with Ziggy? I don't know, telepathically? Some other unknown technology beyond our human ability to grasp? Was it physical in some way? Sexual even? Perhaps the Starman left a piece of himself(itself?) with Ziggy, in Ziggy? Does Ziggy know the consequence of this encounter, that he will eventually be sacrificed? Does he willingly take on this honor?

Maybe the reason we confuse Ziggy and the Starman at times is because the Starman left a piece of himself(itself) with Ziggy, within Ziggy. A bodysnatcher maybe, and Ziggy becomes this beautiful, androgynous creature, Ziggy dies so the Starman can live. Or maybe Ziggy's fascination from meeting the Starman inspired his eroticism and androgyny.

David Bowie – Moonage Daydream Lyrics 7 years ago
I don't really see the connection between the two albums beside the fact Hunky Dory has a song called "Life on Mars" which could fit the space theme, but not really, because Life on Mars is only figuratively referencing space. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is a literal reference to beings from outer space.

@[howiebowie:19328], I'm not saying your interpretation is wrong, but when he says "thank you, this is a song written by Ziggy" it is the lead into Moonage Daydream which, is the next track on the Santa Monica album. So he is actually talking about Moonage Daydream being written by Ziggy. Ziggy did not exist when Queen Bitch was written.
