This song is about a woman who was in a relationship where she was dominating and controlling. Her other half was dependant on her for emotional stability. He was too scared to tell her when she hurt him ("No word from his defence"), which she would sometimes do on purpose ("'I'd cry knowing how my tears felt like acid burning through his skin) The lyric "Now he's afraid of me" is a quote form her earlier on in the relationship, when she was certain he would never leave. "He took me by surprise" means that he finally snapped and left, realising that her moral support was not- well, supporting. "He mistook my silence for punishment as it had been all these years" means that she used to sometimes cold-shoulder him so that he remembered how dependant he was on her. "He acted out, now I can see it is my fault" means that only now she's realised how controlling she was. This is my interpretation, anyways :) |
