Hopefully TTMOE will provide the lyrics when the album officially drops, but I think most of this is pretty close! I'm listening to the song on NPR's First Listen. I imagine it as a love story between a wartime sailor dippin' out on the battle and the girl he meets in a foreign country. At first they can't understand each other, but the language barrier gradually diminishes as they find other ways to communicate (All I said was there were mountains in my way / But they're slowly disappearing and I balance when I feel you to my skin) If "laundry-line believers" is the correct lyric, I really want to know what this means. More literally, believing in laundry lines, as in finding the most happiness in a simple life out in the country? Or metaphorically comparing them to pieces of laundry on a line, in that their lives go any which way the wind takes them, but there is always a part of them "pinned" together? Wondering whether this whole story is a metaphor for his relationship with Amanda. "And we slow dance in the kitchen," "And you smell like smoke and honey in my arms" seem like genuine sweet memories. I am curious to know what others think :) |
