Traffic – Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys Lyrics 3 years ago
From Wikipedia:

The title refers to an inscription written by diminutive American actor Michael J. Pollard in Jim Capaldi's notebook while they were both in Morocco.[1] Capaldi and Pollard were planning to work on a movie that was never filmed. Capaldi said:

Pollard and I would sit around writing lyrics all day, talking about Bob Dylan and the Band, thinking up ridiculous plots for the movie. Before I left Morocco, Pollard wrote in my book 'The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys'. For me, it summed him up. He had this tremendous rebel attitude. He walked around in his cowboy boots, his leather jacket. At the time he was a heavy little dude. It seemed to sum up all the people of that generation who were just rebels. The 'Low Spark', for me, was the spirit, high-spirited. You know, standing on a street corner. The low rider. The 'Low Spark' meaning that strong undercurrent at the street level.[2]

David Bowie – Always Crashing in the Same Car Lyrics 3 years ago
Whatever of the circumstance in which it arose, this song has the quality of a repetitive dream of always crashing in the same car, or always tripping over the same character flaw. It goes with "breaking glass in your room again", too, somehow. The music seems too to come as if from dreams, hypnotic and inspired to address the repetitive tragedy, so it can be known.

John Lennon – #9 Dream Lyrics 4 years ago
Together with “Mind Games” on Shaved Fish, the dream is a celebration of the mystery rite of love. The poem describes a very mysterious and beautiful experience involving love and rain. The song is said to have come to Lennon in a dream. At first he says he knows, at least that it seemed so very real, but then he admits, that he believes, and what more can he say?

He was walking down the street in the heat, when he heard someone call out his name, and then they met as it started to rain, and their dance was like the spirits dance, as love brings the two to participate in what is like the dance of spirits, within the harmony of things lost from the beginning, in a conjunction of conscious and unconscious mind that is like walking in a waking dream. The harmony can apparently be entered briefly by two in love, and it is this brief contact that makes them both wish that the dance were permanent, and seek to recover the lost harmony in the end. But it is here that for a moment the divided human being can be as if whole, when the two participate in or incarnate the life of the soul which, if it were in one, would be the perfected soul. They are out of their minds, and at the same time more in them than they are likely to be again. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet dance like the two hands of a praying saint, and it is on this higher perfection that love depends for its magic. The two together and the singular soul are both in turn images of the Most High, or show what it means that the soul is an image of God, since here the overflow of the image allows indirect vision, by reflection. In love, the intelligible enters the visible, and so, some very strange things happen, as is commonly reported.

Here is a nice note from one called Linclink on Steve Hoffman's Music Forum:

Neil Diamond – Holly Holy Lyrics 4 years ago
This is a good example of inspired lyric, above even what the poet himself, and the listeners, understand, a song that takes us up. First, Holly is similar to evergreen, symbolic of life in winter and is used at Christmas in association with the crown of thorns. The song as a whole is also a good example too of how, in lyric poetry, the music is essential to the communication.

This is a Psalm, written in the pattern revealed by the Biblical Song of Songs, as human love follows the pattern of the imago Dei, the image of God in man.

Note that true love- rare if not extremely rare- is of only one. In the beginning, it is a call of love, the natural function of love songs reaching into the reptilian nature of organic life, i.e, the songs of songbirds. Commentators on Songmeanings note the deep sensuality of the song, but that is to approach it from below. His own participation in the fullness of love allows him something like a vision of the Most High, manifest in both action- his love- and words- this poem.

The unity of the object love in its true form explains everything else about love, that follows from this for we mere nobles, who seek but never find such love. For example: The law against adultery is based upon the same in the soul- that true love is of one. It would support literal monogamy, if Abraham and Sarah were not the first historical example, as the Hebrews learn to pick up those Chaldean girls from over by the well.

The center of the song is addressed to the Most High, upon bursting through into His presence. He is the one who calls the sun to rise in the dead of the night, like a Holly in winter, and the Sun, he's gonna rise. Just as when Jesus touched a man who could not walk upright, and that lame man not only walked but could fly- the sort of soaring that is the high activity of the singular image of God in man. In this way, love is the first rung in the ladder of the philosophic ascent, and can awaken the soul to salvation.

We too were caught up in Thomas Malthus poulation theory and the popular book the "Population Bomb" idea drawn from forcasting based upon the math. This song criticizes the tyranny of intellectual projects based upon simplistic science to be imposed by tyranny. "Messiah" here is of course sarcastic. The new scientific tyrant, ready to solve the population problem by abortion and infanticide, is in a dialogue with the people, who respond, "We are not your friends...etc., and finally eat the tyrant. It is a criticism of "philosophic" rule, philosophy concieved as modern science.

Uriah Heep – Circle of Hands Lyrics 4 years ago
It seems as a co9nflict of light and dark magicians in music, or over the direction of music.

From love, he is saved from evil, which dissolves in the preseance of beauty. Then he encounters something dark, which reminds me of Satanism in heavey metal, though he may have had in mind any sort of political evil, principalities and powers and such. For the sake of tomorrow, these must be kept away, even at some cost. We think Hensley's caracter is a white Magician, like Merlin, whose spirits, like Shakespear'es Prospero's, are involved in poetry.

The Rolling Stones – Wild Horses Lyrics 4 years ago
The dull aching pain is that of infidelity in love, or something quite similar, which favor the one loved now returns.

Wild horses could not drag him away, but infidelity has ended the love- except for this one "touch me in the morning" scene. The "living after we die" is of course after the death of the love.

The mystery line is of course " I know I'v dreamed you/ A sin and a lie." If this is one line, it would seem to mean that he has dreamed up for her a false or sinful world. But rather it seems that he recognizes that he has dreamed the one loved, and he calls this - the illusion of love- a sin and a lie.

Wild horses are of course the image of of the passionate or middle part of the soul, and the enterprise of love is that the human integrate the passions under him as a rider might a horse- someday.

Crazy Ted BEFORE he took up hunting! Dude did not learn that from a journey to the center of mind! Oh well, he never said we'd MAKE it !

Beyond though and "what" is of course interesting, because the Lord too is said to be beyond being or logos. He warns of the danger of becoming trapped in the products of the imagination: Jung speaks of getting "possessed" by an "archetype-" the sources of the products of the imagination in the knowledge that is within the soul. We integrate the contents, by understanding, or else these disintegrate us. Hence the danger of psychedelic drugs especially for those who do too much are not friends with themselves, and do not have the patience to sleep off a bad trip!

Tom Waits – Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen) Lyrics 4 years ago
The Louis Armstrong voice and the drunkenness of the song is part of the brokenness, as the Matilda” is said to be the backpack of a wanderer. This replaces his dancing partner, in the trauma of a broken love that sent him on the road. The episodic stream of half rational images, too, is like muttering drunkenness, reliving the trauma that set him on the road. Traubert is said to have been such a man.

So Matilda is the emptiness where woman goes, accompanying him as he sets off, the universal defendant in a thousand trials for the striking of the heart of every failed lover, and it is his own fault, too, dragged down by the vices that now flock to have a piece of him. But as Robert Plant says, many many man/ Can’t see the open road.”

Bob Seger – Train Man Lyrics 5 years ago
Woking at Seger's house, buildin' on deck'
Ole Vinnie-,
guys now gone and dead- says "Seger didn't do Train Man,"
I said I was sure he did.
But I was wrong that dude was't writin' lovesongs,
Like he somehow didn't have it in his head.
Vinnie's brother, like a hero
Fetched a rock out of the swimmin' pool
Dropped in there by a gardener girl,
So she wouln't get fired,
Or, you know, git her t shirt wet,
But Vinnie's brother Dennis died soon, and his cousin too was on heroin
Vinnie was a finnish carpenter, I used to carry
His tools down that big hill for him.
I still have a piece of wood he used
To push boards through the saw, says "Vin"
And scraps of teak wood from the Cabana bar,
And some kind of dark wood, African
and I work on he geometry problem
From the handrail on the bridge
How to make a curve fit up with an angle
In three dimensions
Right there,sandin' away on it
I was playin' my homemade tape of favorite love song lyrics
Hopin' somethin' might catch on with him
Stuff like Crosby, Stills and Nash and Young
And Leonard Cohen's Suzanne
The tape was old and scratchy
Pirated from old Albums, stuff that makes ya cry
In the night, when they get long and lonely
Judy Collins and such, like Winter Sky
And Dylan's "Sleep in my bed once again."
So out comes Bob, and we were barely used to seein' him,
Says, could ya turn that thing down,"
And so of course I did.
We'd called up the local radio station
To ask 'em to play 2+2 while we were workin'
Believe it or not, CSX didn't even have The System
So they played "Like a Rock" instead.

But see, the Train man comes to the teacher in the night
And all the time she waits for him
He brings her no love anyways
So finally in despair she said:
"If you come tonight,
Bring someone,
Don't come alone, an
Then she tries to say: "If you come alone, don't come,"
But it breaks her, then like a train in the night, she's gone.

All this really happened
There ain't a word false that I'v said
But Bob had written love songs, I was wrong
Good as any Zeppelin ever did.

One morning I sang July Morning by Uriah heap
Right in his driveway by the tallest Cherry trees
I'v ever seen
And, waiting for ole Dan, my Boss, carpenter extreme
I brought Bob's brought his trash cans in.

David Gilmour – Faces of Stone Lyrics 5 years ago
Gilmour himself, on "Unmask Us, writes:

‘Faces Of Stone’ was prompted by a memory of a day walking in Ladbroke Gardens with my mother when she was suffering with dementia. As we were walking through the trees, under the trees, she was saying, “Isn’t it lovely.” She would see pictures that were there hanging in the trees. That was a moment that sparked it off and I had a line that went, “Faces of stone that watched from the dark, As the wind swirled around and you took my arm in the park.” So it’s basically about my mother’s decline and the ending of one life and beginning of another ‘cos Romany was born 9 months before my mother died. So there was a period when they were alive together. She came to our house and held Romany in her arms as a tiny baby and I have a picture of that. So the moment in the park which is a mental picture and the picture of her holding Romany in her arms sparked a little thing that became the lyric.”

Pink Floyd – Arnold Layne Lyrics 5 years ago
It is a character portrait. The mystery of the song may be in the "Two to know." This might first be that it takes one with a fetish to know another from the slight indications in the lyric, but it may, as is not unusual for inspired lyrics, contain more. The cause of human malleability regarding sexuality, unlike the other animals, is in the mystery of "know" in the biblical sense: the longing for the conjunction of the male and female parts of the soul, as occurs in one, in knowledge. But for humans, aside from the participation in the divine, it takes two to know. Don't like it? Tell better!
