Tracey Thorn – Get Around To It Lyrics 7 years ago
Lame cover version of Arthur Russell's amazing original. All hearing this one does is to remind you of the original's quirky, catchy, subtle magic---which this cover completely lacks.

Roger Waters – The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range Lyrics 7 years ago
@[hagakure:19422] Yes, staying out of range is "smart" in the sense of limiting damage to the striking force, but it also allows very DUMB, unnecessary attacks & mis-matched "wars" to be waged----these long-distance strikes make big money for the "defense" contractors & weapons makers (who own many of the major media outlets that control how these events are presented to the public), and therefore it's easy for them to act like launching missiles is a useful solution, since they directly benefit.

And even though many innocent casualties die as a result, the American public don't suffer reciprocally, and look at these attacks/wars as just another form of televised entertainment----which is one of the themes of the album _Amused to Death_, which this song is from. Humans are hypnotized & numbed by staring vacantly into their screens, thinking they're experiencing more of reality when they're mostly just being numbed & distanced from it.

Ed Sheeran – Shape Of You Lyrics 7 years ago
A catchy-but-superficial song about meeting someone in a bar & having sex with them and then wanting more sex. How about, "I'm in love with your mind", or "I'm in love with your heart"? No, it all comes down to shallow lust. A shallow song for a shallow, 'hook-up' culture, where everyone is in love with themselves---or more accurately: in love with the image of themselves that they carefully craft & present to their social media network.

As for their connections to other people, well, that's just attention-deficit-disordered, flash-in-the-pan crushes & instant-gratification horniness. Another swipe on their smart-phone will soon present a different body for them to lust after in the never-ending flesh parade. Real, lasting relationships are dying, and people rarely sing about love these days---just hooking up. Pretty gross & sad, when you stop and think about it. But the young people grooving to songs like this are too young to have any perspective on what is happening, or where their shallow culture is leading them.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Eye Lyrics 7 years ago
@[Croc:19142] "Eye" was released as a single, and also on the soundtrack for David Lynch's 1997 film _Lost Highway_. Here's the Wikipedia entry for the song, which includes this bit of info: "Corgan later said the surprise success of Eye' as a single inspired the band to continue with the new electronica-tinged direction as they began work on Adore." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_(song)

Tool – Pushit Lyrics 7 years ago
@[FC:18066] ---- correction to my previous comment: in H. he's singing more to his son than his partner, and in that instance, it's his child who's "considerately killing" him, but in way that's ultimately good, since it forces him to be reborn into a more positive outlook, forcing him to "open up [his] heart again" In Pushit, it's his partner who's threatening him, but in a guilty, abusive way. In H., its his infant son, who can only come from a place of innocence, "totally void of hate", but that's "killing [him] just the same" since he's not prepared to deal with fatherhood and the storm of emotional issues that the situation stirs up in him. But as the song "Forty Six & Two" deals with, he weathers that storm by stepping into the negative, shadow feelings and "coming out the other side", even if having his old sense of himself die, because he's chosen to "die, learn and love and to do what it takes to step through."

Tool – Pushit Lyrics 7 years ago
I think an important biographical detail behind this song is that Maynard's son was born the year before this album came out, and I think he was already having problems with the mother of the child. 'Pushit' is one of the songs on _AEnima_ to deal with this. "I saw the gap again today / while you were begging me to stay"----he's realizing there's an emotional distance between him and his partner, and the way she's dealing with it is controlling, demeaning, and abusive, and that trying to force him to stay through intimidation or threats isn't true caring, since "there's no love in fear". But the relationship has resulted in a child that he has to accept---"choke this infant here before me / what is this but my reflection?" This relationship is also addressed on _AEnima_ in the song "H.", where he's telling his partner that he's "too connected" to her "to slip/fade away," and that she's "considerately killing" him. In that song, it's his child he's referring to when he says, "My blood [son] before me begs me, open up my heart again."

Puscifer – Momma Sed Lyrics 7 years ago
"Life will pound away where the light don't shine"
I'm not trying to be crude, but Maynard has so many references to anal sex/rape (4 Degrees, Stinkfist, Prison Sex, Opiate, and the lyrics in this one), it makes me wonder if his step-father (or someone) really did molest/rape him. "He was a creepy fuck" said Maynard about his step-dad during his interview with Marc Maron on the WTF podcast, and years earlier he said "No comment" to an interviewer asking if anyone in Tool had been molested, in relation to "Prison Sex."

@[kayforever:15015] If the guy doesn't like the girl back, then is she really "perfect" for him? And what you say applies to girls/women, too---girls like the narrator of this song often have guys who think the same things about them ("I'm perfect for her, why does she like that jerk who doesn't even like her back?"). As the J. Geils song goes, "You love her / but she loves him / and he loves someone else / You just can't win----LOVE STINKS."

The Left Banke – Walk Away Renee Lyrics 7 years ago
@[cocoakrispies:14707] He's not following her, which is why she won't see him doing so. He knows it's over, so he's given up & resigned himself to them going their separate ways---walking back home by himself & missing her. The empty sidewalks no longer represent the charm of a place they can walk together; they're now empty in a forlorn way, which he has to face alone.

Billy Idol – Eyes Without A Face Lyrics 7 years ago
The correct lyric for the 2nd line is: "One more bad BREAK could bring a fall," (not "dream"). Aside from listening closely, you can also tell that it's actually "break" by reading his lips in the official music video and live video performances of this song: his lips close to form the 'B' sound at the beginning, and his lips stay open at the end, for the 'K' sound. (If the word was "dream", his lips would stay open at the beginning for the 'D' sound, and his lips would close at the end for the 'M' sound). And that, my friends, is one way to deduce correct lyrics. (Metrolyrics is the only site I've seen with the correct lyric.)

A Perfect Circle – The Package Lyrics 8 years ago
Could be about drugs or any addiction of course, but I think in this case "the package" is one of Maynard's double-meanings, in this case "package" meaning his dick (calls to mind the song "Maynard's Dick" from Tool's Salival box-set). He's said in interviews that he can't stay faithful to partners while touring, so I think this is written from him acknowledging that aspect of himself---he's said that he was always able to pull back from drugs before getting any sort of addictions, so I think he's referring to his own sexual issues. "Clever got me this far"---famous & desired, acquiring groupies, "tricky got me in", being just sociable & slick enough to get what he wants from them: sex. Watch the APC video "3 Libras", seems to be a similar theme depicted in that video, visually at least---being in bed with multiple women whom he shares no real connection with, "you don't see me at all." But in "The Package" it seems to be more about him pretending he "sees" (understands, cares about) whatever groupie/fan he's using at the time----"nod and watch your lips move." I think that's part of the reason he gets so upset with people always focusing on his Tool persona, because naive fans act like he's some totally profound, enlightened god, when he himself knows better than anyone how animalistic & selfish & superficial he can be. Like he sing in Tool's 'Jambi': "Feast like a sultan, I do / On treasures and flesh, never few." So I think it's safe to say that shallow, sexual lust is his own personal window to understanding the mind-set of an addict.

@[komashu:8476] I always thought it was "reading" as well, until I saw the lyrics online & listened closely, realized it did sound like "raiding." So I sent a message online to Tim Booth (James's singer/lyricist) asking him which was correct, and me messaged me back: "raiding" Nice to know, because it was bugging me!

The Sisters of Mercy – Afterhours Lyrics 8 years ago
"One more night spent on your mirror....this stuff, so strange and lonely, England fades away..."

Sounds like an Englishman in an exotic country doing hard drugs with an exotic woman. Even though the situation & circumstances are lonely, shallow, meaningless, foreign & detached (calling her "Angel" makes it feel like it's just some anonymous woman he barely knows), but he's got hard drugs in his bloodstream, "breathing slow...", that steady, pulsing comfort: ....But after the passion dies down, and the edges of boredom & restlessness & emptiness start poking in, it's time to "take a ride"...maybe to score some more "strange stuff" to snort off of a mirror or just a change of scenery, but either way, on the run from something...

The Romantics – Talking in Your Sleep Lyrics 9 years ago
One way to interpret it is that the singer wants affection from this person, so he's desperately looking for signs of it ("don't you know you're sleeping in a spotlight.") But these assurances ("you tell me that need me, you tell me that you love me") are actually coming from a sleeping person, who could simply be dreaming about someone else---not necessarily the singer!----but this is so eager to believe the affection is for him (which probably isn't the case if he all he has as proof are sleepy mutterings!). Overall it feels like a lonely, pathetic, desperate, obsessive song-----the object of affection is distant, removed, asleep to him, but he's consumed by observing her, looking for any sign or word of affection, to the point of deluding himself into believing what he wants to be true----so in a way, he's asleep himself.
