Yes – Yours Is No Disgrace Lyrics 6 years ago
@[stephenshg:25069] I think we both agree that there is no 'one' meaning. The artist s/himself may have various interpretations at different times, when s/he's being influenced by different circumstances or affects. However, I think there is no point to arguing that the song is about airplanes in the sky and Mr. Magpie, either. Understanding is a constant evolution which masters through play, gets serious, then breaks into a folly that can only be felt by some, but can inspire countless. One which follows only the most basic of rules, just enough to keep it "serious fun", but that works constantly at "refining" those rules. That is the magic of the muse, for me. Great music like this is my grownup version of staring at the clouds!

Christina Perri – Jar of Hearts Lyrics 7 years ago
Here is my interpretation, based on my own experience and therefore not meant in any way to be 'the' interpretation, but I think it interesting that the song has meaning both ways:

"Jar Of Hearts"
I know I can't take one more step towards you
'Cause all that's waiting is regret - (I can’t hope that you will love me again)
Don't you know I'm not your ghost anymore
You lost the love I loved the most - (You are now out of love for me.)

I learned to live half alive (I learned to live without you)
And now you want me one more time - (You still want me to love you, for me to want to come back.)

And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

I hear you're asking all around
If I am anywhere to be found - (As is typical, you want to know how I’m doing, make sure I’m suffering)
But I have grown too strong
To ever fall back in your arms - (Well, I’m not. I too am taking good advice)

And I've learned to live half alive
And now you want me one more time

And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

And it took so long just to feel alright
Remember how to put back the light in my eyes
I wish I had missed the first time that we kissed
'Cause you broke all your promises - (Your cheating, your telling me you’d love me forever)
And now you're back
You don't get to get me back

And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me - (Not don’t come back TO to me, she says ‘for’ me)
Don't come back at all

And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
Tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
Don't come back for me
Don't come back at all

Who do you think you are?

Who do you think you are?

Who do you think you are?

Tracy Chapman – Fast Car Lyrics 8 years ago
@[derf:10271] No one can be 'right' or 'wrong' about their own interpretation of a great song. We all see the images according to our own perspectives. There is grammatical correctness (for sure) and logical structure, so not just any interpretation fits... In the end, I saw the song through the experiences of my life, you through yours. That was Tracy's gift to us both, and to Tracy from the Muse?

@[meowowsyd:9826] I just re-read the song because of your beautiful insights and perspectives.

I noted that it was she who states "Maybe we'll make something? Me (myself,) I got nothing to prove."

She then uses "you" to refer to the owner of the car. It is never otherwise in this song.

She lulls him into the city, a life he may not have been able to afford.. Then she remembers her father. His wife left him, and left our main character with that father. She would never become the woman who left her man.

She then speaks to the owner of the car, her husband. She says "do we leave tonight or live and die this way?" The images created in the first verse were a dream about how they would live, as imagined by her.

As illustrated by the new scenario, that of cruising along the boulevard. This is exposed as a dream too, by the line "we'll move out of the shelter". Together they never left the ghetto.

She still has her ambitions. Clearly a dream. The next two verses are how it really happened for our couple: She's with a drunk, however she feels just like she did when she was a little girl.

She hates her husband's relations with his children because of it. She hates how kids are affected. Kids don't understand alcohol.

She had always hoped for better, despite her saying she had nothing to prove (at the start of the song.)

She sends him on his way, but she remembers her ambitions - the tension in this song - !!!

It ends on the resolve: She is talking to herself, and asking her once again: You gotta leave or take hold, but either way, you gotta decide.

Truly an inspired song by an artist who knows how to feel!

The Rolling Stones – Waiting On A Friend Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is really easy: He's standing in a doorway "watching girls go by" - Hookers. It ain't the latest thing - He's not the first to solicit hookers.
"I'm just trying to make some sense" - He's trying to imagine things from the hooker's point of view, and what they (the hookers) think of men.
Then he realizes he's here for one, (a hooker,) but also his girlfriend.
He comforts himself by lying to himself. "A smile relieves a heart that grieves." No, grace won't befall him.
And he reminds himself over and over that his girlfriend ain't "A Lady" as in a lady of the night.
Then the typical later Mich Jagger Strut. It's like he's being drawn through a spiraling tunnel, temptations flash such as whores, booze and a virgin priest (aren't they all supposed to be?) It's a pretty weak religious image but there always needs to be one in a rock song ;)
The lyrics then contradict: The image of him crying versus the image of him being heroic.
He thinks about how young people can just make love and break hearts, and it doesn't seem to matter.
He's told himself by this time that his girlfriend is not a hooker, she's really a friend.

Billy Joel – Stiletto Lyrics 9 years ago
All of the Joel wives have taken advantage of him, but he doesn't care. He writes about himself being a tough guy in a lot of his songs' lyrics which makes me wonder if this is Billy's outlet? Is performing where he plays "make believe" with the audience Billy's personal "high"?

Yes – Yours Is No Disgrace Lyrics 9 years ago
I think its important to look at he line that the artist repeats in a song, because that is the line he's meaning to have make an impression on you; what his preoccupation was that he's meaning to make yours. In this case its "yours is no disgrace." You have to look at that line in its various contexts, the line being what connects the contexts. In this case, it is always preceded by "if the summer change to winter", which I think is a metaphor for aging. Then I notice that there is a contrast between a sailing ship (one's meandering - musing - life journey) and a battleship which confides in him and tells him where you are. But what about those who don't have anyone looking over them? "Death defying, mutilated armies scatter the earth, Crawling out of dirty holes, their morals, their morals disappear." But you? Your life "is no disgrace." I think it's a song about a guardian angel.

Musically:

The song starts out quite militarily, but turns dreamy before the intro is finished. Then it seems to awaken with the lyrics about birth, then the journey of life. Then the revelation and the lost between the seasons of life. The guardian angel has found the man. Then the two-step almost a Capella part where the angel take a patronly stance towards the man, but reminds him that his is no disgrace, his life will be a good one. The part where the music travels from the right to the left channel is the struggles of man, who doesn't know he has a guardian angel. Conflict to resolve, conflict to resolve. Then a victorious "death-defying" re-intro. Same situation, re-examined with a sly smile. Silly human race, on a sailing ship, leaving anyplace... Return to conflict but this time with a happier feeling. The man is starting to know and trust his guardian angel. Then the sound of elevators, going up! Then the same military refrain. Spaceship sounds. Climax: Repetition of the intro, which is a summary of what the whole song is about. Repeat again, once again reconfirming that despite all the meanderings, the person who is the subject of this song will be saved, there will not be a disgraceful ending.
