The Last Shadow Puppets – The Age of The Understatement Lyrics 9 years ago
I think it's about how nowadays 'understating' emotion and hiding true feeling is the 'trend'. Like Calm Like You they're discussing how people tend not to show what they feel when they feel it or disguise it to appear cool and unaffected, as though showing emotion exhibits weakness or vulnerability or even naiveté. It's about performance instead of honesty, 'And she would throw her feather boa in the wind if she thought that it would set the scene.' And also that affection is there 'to rent' and he begs her to kiss him properly. It's like he's craving impulsive and honest emotion. He has to check her pulse to see what she's really feeling because she won't show it. But on the other side it feels like he's aching to show what he's feeling but can't because of how cool and reserved she's acting around him.

The Last Shadow Puppets – Calm Like You Lyrics 9 years ago
I think it is, like many of you have said, about someone who falls deeply in love when he is young, so he absorbs all the smells and sounds of everything around him and feels things deeply and isn't afraid of the consequences of speaking his feelings even though it eventually harms him. It feels as though that raw and open emotion is both admired and longed for even though it can be destructive. It's hard to see if Alex is yearning for that youthfully honest emotion or sanctioning against it.
