Editors – Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors Lyrics 5 years ago
Maybe it's just because someone in my house has been watching the HBO series 'Band of Brothers' but this song makes me think of soldiers in a war.

Say goodbye to everyone
You have ever known
You are not gonna see them
Ever again
> Even if you come back from the war, you won't be the same person they knew

I can't shake this feeling I've got
My dirty hands, have I been in the wars?
> Experiencing battle, leading to shock and PTSD

The saddest thing that I'd ever seen
Were smokers outside the hospital doors
> Waiting outside the hospital to hear how your friends are doing and seeing other soldiers doing the same thing, all smoking to give themselves something to do and try to calm their nerves

Someone turn me around
Can I start this again?
Now someone turn us around
Can we start this again?
> Wanting to go back to before the war, to return to innocence

We've all been changed
From what we were
Our broken hearts
Left smashed on the floor
> Looking at the people around you and thinking about how they've all been changed, how war has broken them

I have more thoughts but these are the most coherent ones...

Brendan Maclean – Stupid Lyrics 9 years ago
After a couple of listens, my interpretation is this song is about sour grapes.

"If you weren't so stupid, I could have loved you
And if you weren't so stupid
But you're pretty stupid
And if you weren't so busy, I could have loved you
But you work in an office
And you've got other offers"
>>However he knows her, it isn't through work, and he's tried to hint that he wants to be more than friends with her, but she hasn't caught on, hence her being "stupid."

"Tell me, what is his name now?
What is his name?
I'm excited to hear the news
Tell me, what is his name now?
What does it say about you?"
>>He's always listening to her talk about her boyfriends, and faking his enthusiasm (or hoping she catches his sarcasm).

"But let's not
Be friends
Or else this will never end
Let's not
Be friends for sure
For sure"
>>He doesn't want to stay where they are in their relationship forever.

"And if you weren't so ugly, I could have loved you
It's something I tell myself when I'm down to get high
Lord
If you made me a coffee, I could have loved you
And I'd make you hot chocolate
And anything you wanted."
>>He tells himself she's "ugly" and that's why he isn't doing anything more, and that if she'd shown him any positive sign he would have responded in kind.

"Tell me, who is invited?
So fucking delighted
To see all the boys, you see
Tell me, why don't I fight it?
What does it say about me?"
>>Again, he's there to hear her news, hear her talk about her upcoming wedding, and then he wonders why he isn't saying anything, why he isn't doing anything.

"And let's not
Be friends
Or else this will never end
Let's not
Be friends for sure
For sure

"We'd adopt
We'd have dogs
I have all the things he's got
But I'm not"
>>He muses on what their future together would look like, even as she tells him what her beau is like. He thinks about how he and her beau have things in common, but they're not the same.

"So let's stop
Pretend
That there'll be a happy end
Let's not
Be friends for sure
For sure

"We'd adopt
We'd have dogs
I have all the things he's got
But I'm not"
>>He's giving up on all chance of pursuit, completely giving up on his dream of what they could have had together.

(It's also my opinion that he's an entitled jerk.)
