The Neighbourhood – How Lyrics 8 years ago
Though it is clear the song is about questioning belief in a God, I don't think it is meant to be a conversation (between two people or entities). This is someone questioning their own beliefs, an internal monologue. Through internal dialogue realizing the belief in God is individual concept. You could then speculate that if my God let me down, then the God or vision of God you created is faulty (How could you tell me that I'm great).

"Cheated and lied, broken so bad
You made a vow, never get mad"
Broken marriage or long term relationship.

"They’re all the same, who can compare?"
Men are all the same, or so are Women?

"First you lose trust, then you get worried"
This is about love/hate and desire/fear of loss

"Night after night, bar after club
Dropping like flies, who woke you up?
On the front lawn, sprinklers turn on
It’s not your house, where’d you go wrong?
First you get hurt, then you feel sorry"
Self-loathing and pity

"Flying like a cannonball, falling to the earth
Heavy as a feather when you hit the dirt"
This is a play on a physics conundrum: What hits the ground first a bullet fired(or cannon ball) or feather dropped from the same height. The answer is they both hit at the same time. So we could interpret this as it does not matter how fast we try to hit bottom, we will end up there in the end or at the same time.

"How am I the lucky one
I do not deserve to wait around forever when you were there first"
The marriage/relationship seems over, but no one is leaving

"First you get hurt, then you feel sorry
There comes a time in a short life
Turn it around, get a rewrite
Call it a dark night of the soul
Ticking of clocks, gravity’s pull
First you get close, then you get worried"
Each person in the relationship thinks they are ready to leave, but don’t

"You’re growing silent, the silent treatment
It’s not inviting now, but don’t deny what you meant
You get excited, you get excited
You got a feeling, oh, at least you can pretend"
Sullen, yet excited to take action, but will it be to push someone away this time or pull them closer.

"You wanna light it, you wanna light it
You wanna light it now, the candle from both ends
You get excited, you get excited"
This is about taking on life, either burning passion or burning the relationship down and moving on. (which is the general them of the whole song)
