The Neighbourhood – Wires Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is about Jesse (the singer) and a friend of his who wanted to be successful in the music industry as Jesse and the rest of The Neighbourhood are now. I saw in a interview with The NBHD that Jesse writes all the songs in the moment about whatever he is feeling lately. So i don't think there is a super deep meaning behind it relating to another story or people, but that's just my opinion. I'll try to explain my views with every couple lines of the song.

"We talked about making it
I’m sorry that you never made it
And it pains me just to hear you have to say it"
^
I think this part obviously relates to him and his friends day dreaming before The NBHD's success and how they wanted to make it in the music industry. Then Jesse states how he feels bad that his friend didn't make it and become successful like they both planned.

"You knew the game and played it,
it kills to know that you have been defeated"
^
I think he's saying how his friend knew what to do for his aspirations but he didn't get to reach his goal and failed.

"I see the wires pulling while you’re breathing
You knew you had a reason,
It killed you like diseases,"
^
He sees his friend kind of going crazy or out of his mind. He says "you knew you had a reason" meaning his friend knew he was meant to make music, and it didn't literally kill him but drove him crazy because he couldn't reach his potential.

"And I can hear it in your voice while your speaking; you can’t be treated.
Mr. Know-it-all had his reign and his fall,
At least that is what his brain is telling all"
^
He can hear in his friends voice that its killing him inside. Referring to his friend as a "Mr. Know-it-all" meaning his friend acted like he knew all about the industry or just making music in general and even he who knew failed at it, and that people could tell he failed by the way he acts now.

"If he said "Help me kill the president"
I’d say he needs medicine,"
^
Saying that his friend is obviously out of his mind now so if he were to say something abnormal, Jesse and others would just reply saying he needs help and not think too much into it.

"Sick of screaming, let us in
Wires got the best of him
All that he invested in, goes
Straight to hell"
^
In my opinion i think the line "sick of screaming let us in" is Jesse and the rest of the NBHD saying they're getting tired of this friend asking to maybe join them or asking for their help to get to where he wants to be. I think "wires" is just a metaphor to what's making him go crazy; a word to simplify the situation. And everything he does to try to reach his goal is just going bad because he's too far into his own thoughts now trying to become this automatic star in his mind.

"He told me I should take it in
Listen to every word he’s speaking
The wires getting older I can hear the way their creaking
As their holding him"
^
His friend is telling him to just listen to everything he's saying and try to understand where he is coming from. The way his friend is speaking, Jesse can tell that its getting worse. Like a desperation.

"Well I could see it in his jaw
That all he ever wanted was a job"
^
He can tell by the way his friend speaks that all he wants to do is have that career.

"He tells me to be raw
Admits to every little flaw
That never let him sit upon the top
Won’t tell me to stop
Thinks that I should be a little cautious
Well I can tell the wires pulled"
^
His friend is telling him to just be open to him and his friend admits everything bad about himself. The friend tells Jesse not to stop but to be careful, maybe about the industry. Because his friend knows from failure how hard it is. Now Jesse can clearly see once more that his friend is agitated by his failure and possibly Jesse's success.

"I’m having trouble in believing
And I just started seeing
Light at the beginning of the tunnel but he tells me that I’m dreaming
When he talks I hear his ghosts every word they say to me
I just pray the wires aren't coming"
^
Jesse's not fully trusting what his friend is saying and at the time Jesse is just starting to experience the new fame and glory of being successful with the rest of his band but his friend is telling him that it might just be a "15 minutes of fame" kind of thing. When Jesse's friend talks, Jesse can "hear his ghosts" i think he's saying how he can hear his old friend there but he hopes the new out of his mind friend won't return.

Well that's just my interpretation of the whole song. Take it how you will. It's a damn great song though
