Sarge – Homewrecker Lyrics 5 years ago
Sounds like it's about an adult man gas-lighting an underage girl that he's in a "relationship" with, sung from the perspective of the minor. I love Elizabeth Elmore as a lyricist, because she touches on subject matter like this, that is rarely talked about in song form

Chuck Prophet – Old Friends Lyrics 5 years ago
A perennial favorite of mine since May of 2007. Great song for those wistful summertime nights

Dire Straits – Telegraph Road Lyrics 6 years ago
Just wanted to offer some insight into this verse;

"And my radio says tonight it's gonna freeze
People driving home from the factories
There's six lanes of traffic
Three lanes moving slow"

The narrator seems to be indicating that it's a divided highway, and traffic is backed up on the side that is leaving the city, a metaphor for the people, jobs, and fertile times in Detroit fading away.

The Velvet Underground – New Age Lyrics 6 years ago
I love the ending where the fuzz bass, the piano and the organ all play in unison. Doug Yule really was an incredible musician (responsible for about 80% of whats on the track)

Liz Phair – Go West Lyrics 6 years ago
Great song, great lyrics. Liz was on fire in the early '90s

submissions
Liz Phair – One Less Thing Lyrics 6 years ago
Definitely one of my favorite Liz Phair songs. This is her at her peak; singing about her new life in Chicago, and questioning all of her decisions

submissions
Blur – Caramel Lyrics 6 years ago
@[alovelyfadeout:24270] The "caramel" in this situation is probably heroin; He started using it when he was dating Justine.

submissions
Mary Timony – Blood Tree Lyrics 6 years ago
The last line is clearly about Ash Bowie from Polvo, who she used to be with; She used to sing it as "Moved to North Carolina," in reference to him returning to Chapel Hill after the breakup of Helium. The rest of the song is her comparison of following relationship to hers with Ash, and the myriad aspects of the more recent ex.

Superchunk – The First Part Lyrics 6 years ago
Always thought the line "One good minute will last me a whole year" was about being high.

Echo and the Bunnymen – Flaming Red Lyrics 6 years ago
My favorite song on the album. Noel sounds amazing, and Will's guitarwork brings tears to my eyes

submissions
Spiritualized – Cool Waves Lyrics 6 years ago
In this song, Jason is letting Kate Radley leave. He's setting her free, and telling her not to feel guilty about the end of the relationship. Really powerful song

submissions
The Replacements – The Ledge Lyrics 6 years ago
When he sings that last verse, my heart stops

"Priest kneels silent, all is still
Policeman reaches from the sill
Watch him, watch him try his best
There'll be no medal pinned to his chest"

Hopefully someday a copy of Paul's vocal circulates on the internet. I'd love to hear just the vocals on this song

Wilco – Capitol City Lyrics 6 years ago
The lyrics to "Capitol City," which was released on The Whole Love in 2011, originated fully intact in Jeff Tweedy's 2004 poetry book entitled Adult Head. Makes you wonder what other gems he has kicking around that haven't seen the light of day

submissions
Wilco – Bull Black Nova Lyrics 6 years ago
Almost 10 years later, and this song sounds just as amazing/breathtakingly terrifying as when I first heard it as a young teenager. Tweedy's lyrics, delivery, and the guitar interplay between him and Nels Cline is chilling. Kotche's drumming is amazing in its minimalism too. A perfect song on a great record

submissions
Wilco – The Lonely 1 Lyrics 6 years ago
My take: that the narrator is not only a fan of the artist being sung to, but also has a romantic desire for her (no gender is given, but Tweedy's choice of words makes me think the singer is female), and the song is meant not just as a show of empathy for a tortured artist (and vice versa), but also a song of lust about wanting someone you can never be with.
(Bear in mind, I'm probably just projecting my own experiences onto the song, but as a music fan, and the albums dealings with the relationship between artist and fan, it makes sense)

Buffalo Tom – Twenty-Points (The Ballad of Sexual Dependency) Lyrics 6 years ago
Chris seems to be writing and singing about the problems within a relationship, and the compromises one has to make to make it work. Beautiful song on an underrated album

submissions
Curve – Think and Act Lyrics 6 years ago
Seems to be about how Toni was portrayed as "difficult" in the press, and how that wasn't necessarily true or accurate.

submissions
Ash – Shining Light Lyrics 6 years ago
This song, along with "Sometimes," always makes me think of a person very dear to my heart who recently moved away. Tim and Charlotte really shine on both songs, and form the emotional core of the group

@[PappyHab:21568] Constant Source. If you watch Tim's mouth on the Magdeburg 2004 performance, you can see him say "constant"

@[GEOpz838:21108] @[Alieno:21109] His mother passed away in 1986, eight years before this song came out. He's implying they're reunited in some form of an afterlife

Spiritualized – So Long You Pretty Thing Lyrics 6 years ago
Possibly one of the best songs about (nearly) dying ever written. Makes me cry every time I hear it. I think Jason showed incredible bravery writing this when he was seriously ill. I can't imagine a world without him in it

submissions
Blur – Starshaped Lyrics 7 years ago
Great song. It uses the office job metaphor perfectly, and how a boss can talk you up, just to wring every last good drop out of you for their own benefit. It seems pretty clear to me though, that this is a metaphor for the music industry and the treatment blur got in their early years

submissions
Red House Painters – Michael Lyrics 7 years ago
Beautiful song. I also have a childhood best friend named Mike, who I have recently gotten back in touch with. So it means a lot to me, having lived out many of these experiences for the first time with him

Sonic Youth – Antenna Lyrics 8 years ago
The song seems to about Eva Prinz, Thurston's mistress. Kim stated in her book that on the last tour "Thurston made it clear that he didn't want to play this Sonic Youth song, or that Sonic Youth song. It became clear that some of these songs were about her [the mistress]." Sonic Youth had played "Antenna" at almost every show in 2009 and 2010, but was conspicuously absent in 2011.

And look at the last verse;

"every day i feel more like her
she trained magic in the bed and gone
out for blood, my selfless lover
forever yours, and then she's gone"

He's falling in love, not trying to save a dying relationship. But he misses seeing her on tour thus the "forever yours, and then she's gone" line, followed by the wistful chorus.

This is a 2 minute pop classic. Love the Nu-Industrial elements. (They were on TVT, so it makes sense.) Lovely reinvention of their sound

Possibly the greatest song ever written. The way the two guitars harmonize after a few bars is genius.

Pavement – Zurich Is Stained Lyrics 9 years ago
beautiful song.... sounds like the kind of music only a young person in their 20's can write. after that, these types of "feelings in sound" seem to be gone for good, unfortunately. (I don't know if this makes any sense or not.)

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Bullet Lovers Lyrics 9 years ago
Always thought this song was about heroin.

"Black eyed blonde and a blonde eyed black
Come from hell and we won't be back
I'm in your blood and I'm in your bones
Better dead than to be stuck alone"

The junkie tried to get clean but it's in their blood and bones. dope will always be a part of them. They want an escape, even if that means death. They would rather be dead than live the lonely life of an addict.
Several songs on S&D seem to deal with addiction, namely the ones William wrote. ("Save Me," "Girlfriend" "Dirty Water" etc.)

Wilco – The Lonely 1 Lyrics 9 years ago
I've always interpenetrated the narrator to be a male fan, of a female musician who is simultaneously awed by/feels empathy towards her, and possibly has an attraction towards her;
He is lonely too. He gets home from the show, puts on her CD, and writes what he sings. Tweedy has really created a character that has a large sensitive side. One that I can relate to

Death Cab for Cutie – Tiny Vessels Lyrics 9 years ago
Just an observation;
Somehow the lyrics cut deeper, with the way the song slowly creeps along, and how Ben Gibbard delivers the key line in a gentle tone, instead of having them shouted out loud.

The Replacements – Left Of The Dial Lyrics 9 years ago
Reminds me of my current situation. Met the girl of my dreams, at a party, who plays in an indie rock band. She lives out of state though, and odds are I wont see her again for a very long time. but I'll always have her music to listen to. (oddly enough, one of our big connections was The Replacements. It's weird how life works out like that)
