London Grammar – If You Wait Lyrics 10 years ago
To me this song communicates longing really really well. The way she sings the words "if you wait" is so appropriately emotional. I absolutely love this song, and the entire album for that matter.

I *think* it's about wanting badly to love, but not being able to. Maybe it's not the right time, not the right situation, maybe not even the right person -- or any person at all. Maybe she is singing about somebody she wants but has never met.

Looking forward to reading other interpretations of this.

A Great Big World – Say Something Lyrics 10 years ago
I fully agree with artistdujour's comment that a well-written song can be related to on a million different levels.

I think this song is actually about letting go of an unfulfilling relationship. Recognizing the longing to make something happen/work, and settling with the fact that it won't. But it could be any party speaking to any party. In my dark moments I imagine that the innocence and beauty of life is speaking directly to me through this song.

Stealing Sheep – Genevieve Lyrics 10 years ago
"Genevieve is not about a real person, it’s about looking at yourself and challenging your thoughts. At least that’s what I think. Everyone will probably draw a different meaning from it depending on how they can relate to it… “look to the sun and you’ll come undone, it’s all just a dream your feeling” … I think that’s about letting go and realising you are as free as you want to be. We just think the name Genevieve is a lovely name and it fitted in the song really well." - the ladies themselves :-)

CocoRosie – Villain Lyrics 10 years ago
I could be reading way too far into this, but I think this is about a miscarriage stemming from an unwanted pregnancy (maybe stemming from an unwanted sexual experience in the first place).

The last bit is super interesting. "What happened to my life ... I should have taken it myself ... 'bloodless daughter bride'" seems to refer to the girl and the baby concurrently. I should have ended the pregnancy myself / I should have killed myself. Bloodless daughter bride = pregnant (ie: not menstruating) girl / a dead child who [would have been] born into the same abusive situation that lead to its conception.

Just my take...

Lorde – Team Lyrics 10 years ago
Supposedly, Lorde has said this is about her early years growing up in New Zealand. Seems to be summed up pretty well in:

"We live in cities you'll never see on screen
Not very pretty but we sure know how to run free
Livin' in ruins of the palace within my dreams
And you know we're on each other's team"

This implies some disconnect with the rest of the world, and a unity between everyone who experiences it. It makes a pretty logical foundation for themes in other songs, like Royals, where she sings about being confused and bored by the empty opulence that the world worships. Growing up she found fulfillment in other things.

Seems like a pretty simple song to me, unless I'm missing something. Can't wait for the album!

Yeasayer – 2080 Lyrics 10 years ago
i'm not sure if there's any significance to this. but 2080 happens to be the number of hours you work in a year at a full time job (40 x 52).
