Pearl Jam – Jeremy Lyrics 10 years ago
Oh give me a break. So the band is socially conscious. What is wrong with that? And whose angst was he cashing in on? It was 1991, the "real" school massacres didn't happen until 1999 at Columbine. Social angst has always been around....... where do you live?

No he came back to life on April 20, 1999. in Littleton, Colorado at a High School called Columbine, and before that he was hanging out in a bell tower at Kent State. Jeremy has been around for a long time.

Pearl Jam – Jeremy Lyrics 10 years ago
"Jeremy" clearly demonstrates that the school bullying problem along with dysfunctional single or two absentee parent homes has been around since the 90's. Contrary to everyone's belief Sandyhook was not the first major school shooting. Columbine was, and that happened in the 1990's. We as a society have been aware of the effects of constant bullying for decades. This song just drives that nail a little further into the coffin. This song was written before Columbine or Sandy Hook or Virginia Tech.

If a grunge rock band can see what is happening and write a very powerful song about it, then why can society not get their act together, and put counselors back in the schools, give the schools a budget big enough to operate so kids like this won't fall through the cracks, maybe spend some money on our own infrastructure which has failed not only my generation, but the generation after, and the generation after that.

I mean, honestly, a grunge band from the Pacific Northwest saw this happening long before any of the "massacres", that everyone seems so surprised about. If this song was written prior to the "advent" of the school massacre, perhaps, it would have behooved people to pay attention. School shootings are not new even though reacts to each one in horror as if it is the first one, and nobody seems to remember Kent State. That happened in the 60's. Our society needs to pay more than lip service to this problem. We have kids shooting classmates, we have committing suicide to escape the constant bullying. When do we wake the F*&^ up, and realize we are failing as a society.......

I was bullied from the time I was in Grammar School all the way through High School. Yes, I entertained thoughts of blowing up my school, and I had a few people on my list. But, I had self control. i had no support at home. I had to support myself. And that self control and knowledge of who I was not along with a few astute teachers kept me from going off the deep end. Bullying is incredibly real, and can be mentally damaging for life. It sucks up everything you are, turns it into something perverse and wrong and to be laughed at, and then spits you back out.

The song "Jeremy" only predicted what was going to happen, and guess what? They were right. Interesting side note, the album "Ten" which contains the song "Jeremy" was put out in 1991. Columbine happened in 1999. That's 8 years. That's too long to ignore a growing problem, and every time this happens, people are horrified for a few weeks and then they forget. Nothing is accomplished but, a hell a lip service is paid to the issue, and then the issue goes away until it happens again. Which it most definitely will.

Sorry for the dissertation. Bullying in schools and anywhere is a passionate pet peeve of mine as is our government's seeming inability to effect any change on this front. Pearl Jam noticed in 1991. Columbine happened in 1999, Sandy Hook in 2013, Virginia tech was between the two. Notice a pattern?

Candlebox – Far Behind Lyrics 10 years ago
I have to disagree. The lyric: "As you trip the final line" says to me, somebody who has gone over the edge, and can't tolerate the pain of living anymore and they choose to end their life, hence leaving everything far behind. I think it is about mental illness, substance abuse, and suicide not overdose although that can be a form of suicide.

I think this song is about mental illness, and all that entails such as drug and alcohol abuse as well as being vulnerable to others who prey on weakness hence the line about not wanting to treat a person badly but did it any way. I also think this song is about a person pushed so far towards the edge that they "crumbled' to the ground while their "friends" watched, and then committed suicide.

So, in a nutshell, this is a song about mental illness, being emotionally and psychologically abused by people who are supposed to be friends, and ultimately, not being able to stand the pain, and taking one's own life.

It is not a happy song, nor is it a song about Britney Spears as one poster inanely said. I, mean, seriously.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics 11 years ago
I am replying to myself......hence the name "ADDGirl." I just wanted to add that the last part of the song is what makes me think of loss and change (either physical or mental)

"How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
And how we found
The same old fears.
Wish you were here."

It's like everything is the same but it's not really. Everything is different, but in such a subtle fashion that you sense a bit of the other person/people and the way they were, but they aren't. You talk about the same things, you do the same things, you fear the same things, but at some point either you or they or both stepped out. But, it's comfortable and uncomfortable. Hence, the line "How I wish, how I wish you were here..." but they aren't, and they won't be. You can get as nostalgic as you want about the way it once was, but it won't ever be that way again.

Then again, I may have it all wrong. Maybe I should be wishing I was here since I stepped out of my "normal" life about 12 years ago :) It could be about oneself, too,I suppose, and wishing that things wouldn't change. Who knows? It's Pink Floyd....

I have always thought the song Wish You Were Here was about how people in relationships (whatever kind: marriages, friendships, bandmates, partnerships, etc.) change over time, and their values/principles change with them. People in relationships don't always change in compatible ways, and I think the song is about grieving the loss of a husband/wife, a good friend, anyone with whom you've had a close relationship who has changed in such a way that they are not the person you fell in love with, made friends with, started a project with, and you miss the "old" them. Henceforth, the title "Wish You Were Here." A person does not have to physically be gone to be gone. It is possible to change to a degree that you really are not the same person you once were. However, you stay in that relationship because it is comfortable all the while wishing that it could be as it once was.

So, I think it is a song about loss and mourning that loss even if it is psychological in nature. At least, that is what that song has always meant for me. Loss and mourning and wishing someone hadn't "gone away."
