It's clear what the song is about: he's comparing the toy bear and the girl he loves as they're both things that make people happy but they can't have. This is a beautiful and tragic song. Doin' Alright was good, but if Queen was going to rerecord a Smile song for an album it should've either been this one or Earth (and they actually did a couple takes of this song in studio during the recording for their first album but I really can't enjoy the recording because Freddie ad-libbed half the lyrics and it loses a lot of its meaning that way). |

I think "Lucy was high, and so was I" was meant to date the song: Sgt Pepper was released in 1967, when Brian May (who wrote this song) would've been twenty. I think the song is describing what he was personally going through at the time. I initially interpreted this song as being about one who lost his naivety, a person who grew up and began to see the world from more perspectives than just the one he was raised to have; nothing is black and white anymore, and he no longer knows what is right or wrong, if the way he is living is right anymore, and he is left to be sad, confused, and alone. Maybe I chose to think of it that way because I can relate to the song in that way, I'm not sure: I agree that is also can deal with depression, and now I end up thinking it has to do with both, especially taking into consideration the chorus. Ultimately this is probably my favorite Queen song: Queen's first album is just a gem in the first place, and this song is simply beautiful. And as I said I can relate to it a lot and it brings me comfort (if one could say that) that I have found a songwriter that understands what I'm currently going through. |
