The world is fucked up but it doesn't matter. So long as they have each-other, their dance continues.

And not to nitpick, but for you to compare "keeping score" as you call it, to SLAVERY is well.... not something I can agree with. Like, at all.

What do you mean by "keeping score"? I mean, if you're saying what I think you are, then I have to ask: how are we ever going to solve inequalities if we don't acknowledge them?

This is getting a little of track, but what you said reminds me of the whole "color blind" thing, wherein white people think they're being progressive/helpful by pretending they don't "see" race/skin color, when really all they're doing is making things more convenient for themselves whilst erasing a vital part of people's identity.

Btw when I said white folks, I meant to say "most white folks".

They are both wrong, but to say they're equally wrong is a bit of a stretch. I'd just say they're different, because of the prevalence thing. Racism toward white people is incidental, whereas racism toward black people is much more omnipresent and therefore it packs more of a punch because it reaffirms negative stereotypes and racist beliefs that are more prevalent than white folks would care to admit.

I recommend looking up a video called "Black Doll White Doll" on youtube. It demonstrates how racism affects children from an incredibly young age, even in today's society.

Also "AC360 Doll Study", and "Blue Eye Brown Eye". All these videos are great, and might even be an eye opener for some people.

Basically I see this as about the cycle of abuse.

Not to mention people of color haven't been very welcome in the punk scene, generally speaking. Many people approach them with a "what are you doing here?" or "it's like i'm looking at a unicorn" type attitude. I'm sure it was worse back in the 80's when this song was written.

Eh...

Racism is still a huge problem today. Yes, slavery ended before we were all born, but that doesn't mean racism just magically evaporated the second it was abolished. I'm white and even I can figure that one out. Whatever hardships we face, it's nothing compared to what black people deal with in this country.

White people's idea of racism is basically "Boohoo some black girl picked on me in middle school". Black people's idea of it: "I might not get that job. Statistically I'm more likely to drop out of school (leads to lack of confidence in abilities). A cop might racially profile me and violate my rights. Everyone assumes shit about me, whereas white people are 'the norm' so are judged individually. Oh and some fuck nut with a gun might take it upon himself to shoot me to 'protect his neighborhood'".

If there is racism toward white people, it's purely in retaliation to what they have had to deal with their entire lives. Does that make it right? No. But are you really surprised?

Life keeps moving ("Nothing in place of catalysts"), you can never go back ("You'll never be pure again"), and death awaits you ("Nothing can stop it's narrative").

Great song, but very morbid.

I get the sense that this is about adults abusing the power of authority they have over children ("Born again before teething, collect tears from their weeping").

When the narrator grows up, she still feels as though people do not view her as a human being ("I'm just flesh to give away").

People think literally every song is about sex.

Funnily enough, abortion is another one I've seen come up seemingly out of nowhere.

Blonde Redhead – 23 Lyrics 11 years ago
This is a truly beautiful and mysterious song. I've listened to it for awhile now and I still haven't fully grasped what it means for me. It always seems to speak to a part of me that I can't explain or put into words.

I definitely agree with the idea that life as we know it can be changed in a matter of seconds. Life is short. You can die at any time, so why not shake things up ("23 magic, if you can change your life")? Either way, the world keeps turning.

I also feel this song alludes to a relationship which the singer has conflicted feelings about ("He as a song of God, he was a song of a gun", "Your tainted heart, my tainted love"). How this all ties together is hard to say. It might be a love song, and this message is directed at this man she speaks of. Or perhaps he is gone from her life and this song is a reflection on life and death. Who knows?
