John Lennon – #9 Dream Lyrics 1 month ago
With ALL DUE RESPECT, I think it's pretty unrealistic to think that John Lennon could give an account of his death before he died. I don't recall there being any death threats made to Lennon. At that time, the consensus was that it was great that Lennon was making music again. AND DON'T overlook the fact that "#9 Dream" was a full 6 years, yes, 6 years before he died.
I'm sorry that I am contradicting some of the points of view here. But I just can't see those version of events happening.

Sufjan Stevens – Free Man in Paris (Joni Mitchell cover) Lyrics 2 months ago
I appreciate Mr. Stevens for putting this song in the link herein ! !

The popular notion of this song is that Joni Mitchell wrote this song about David Geffen.

You don't need to pump up the volume for this song
You don't need to plaster the lyrics all over your home
Remember the lyrics
Hear the tune
And get inside the song.

You can believe that this song is about David Geffen
Look at the lyrics and transcend them.
COULD THIS POSSIBLY BE ABOUT ANYBODY BESIDES
DAVID GEFFEN?
you know the answer is YES ! ! !

@[EileenT:49542] My former wife didn't even like this song, and she was born during the Summer of Love.
She was ok with "Coming Back to Me," which, as you beautifully stated is a perfect companion song.
But everytime I fell love (3x), this song runs thru my mind as I sing the words from the heart.
After my late girlfriend died over a year ago, there's always hope to fall in love again. I'll never grow tired of singing this song!!

Supertramp – Hide In Your Shell Lyrics 2 years ago
@[Sunnyhill:38397] I think this part of the song goes with a lot of the song's lyrics when he's pleading to the other person to open her heart and let him help her by loving her.
Where's he taking her to? A place where there's romance rather than pain and isolation.

Supertramp – Hide In Your Shell Lyrics 2 years ago
Roger was quoted as saying,
"People often write to me and say that this song in particular strikes a chord in them. Maybe it's because I was going through a difficult time in my life when I wrote it that people are able to relate to it. Our teenage years seem to be difficult ones for many of us, especially if one is sensitive. I know there is a tendency to want to Hide in Your Shell."
I think that the singer in the song is making an earnest, loving plea that the one who is hurt, who is hiding should give him a chance so that she gets past the pain.
But I do have a question
Toward the end what do the lyrics in the parentheses mean. In particular what does it mean when they sing,
(So what you're gonna take it to?)....
(So what you're gonna make it do?).....
(So what's he gonna do?)

I think the meaning of this song is pretty clear, but I don't understand the lyrics quoted above.

Fleetwood Mac – That's All For Everyone Lyrics 3 years ago
You have to understand what happened BEFORE this song was written to understand the song. This song comes from the album Tusk. Tusk was the follow up to the extremely successful Rumors. So, the expectations for Tusk to succeed as much as Rumors.
Lindsey Buckingham was one of the driving forces (clearly Stevie Nicks & Christie McVie were songwriters and created the success as well); he FELT the PRESSURE of trying to make Tusk a great album, too. The band agreed ultimately to release it as a double album. Lindsey B was heavy handed when guiding the group through his songs. There's well-documented stories of him acting out at the expense of others. For instance, one time the band had to wait outside the studio for Lindsey B to figure out how they would record the songs he had in mind. During this time, Lindsey B. was even criticized for simply shaving his beard off and cutting his hair shorter, because the rest of the guys (including the engineers) had long hair and beards (like they did for Rumors).
That's the background.
Lindsey was trying so hard to make Tusk another excellent album that after getting some resistance (some deserved, but some unfairly) he just felt like giving up. That's the inspiration of this song!
He sings,
"I call for everyone
I cry for more
That's all for everyone"
LATER he says
"I can't stay
I can't deceive
That's all for everyone"
So, he is saying, he tried to lead, but came up short, and now, he wants to give up. "I call for everyone" & "I can't stay/I can't deceive" means he knows how hard he was trying to lead, and even HE KNEW THAT HE WASN'T SUCCEEDING.
He sings,
"That's all
I need someone to know."
What he means is something we can relate to! After we mess up and are criticized, we want, we need to be understood.
There was even some guilt at not succeeding like before. That he was being misunderstood by those around him as they made Tusk.
He repeats and sings, "must be just exactly what I need."
This can be interpreted 2 ways. One is, since he knew he came up short; he needs to try again in a new way. The thing he "needs" is to change.
Another way to interpret, "must be just exactly what I need" is that he feels some guilt, and even thinks he deserves some criticism.
Lindsey B **remarks about Tusk, "For me, being sort of the culprit behind that particular album, it was done in a way to undermine just sort of following the formula of doing Rumours 2 and Rumours 3, which is kind of the business model Warner Bros. would have liked us to follow,"
Yet, 42 years after Tusk and this song was made, they deserve praise that Tusk, this song receives!! Millions have heard Tusk, maybe not as many heard "That's All for Everyone."
In general, the beauty of a great album, of a great CD are the sublime songs in the album that don't go Top 40 in Billboard and aren't well known.
"That's All for Everyone" is such a beautiful "gold nugget" in this double album.
We all can relate to wanting to succeed but then coming up short. I can relate to Lindsey B singing about giving up. Yet, he didn't. No, he's not in the band now, but think of all the Fleetwood Mac albums, concerts done after Tusk. After this song, "That's All for Everyone"

Veruca Salt – Sleeping Where I Want Lyrics 5 years ago
The tune beautifully intertwines with the lyrics. There's a dreamy almost lullaby quality to the song.
It starts out with a slow, sedate strumming and she slowly, sleepily sings, "This is my favorite disease, I am sleeping in his dreams."
When it moves out of the lullaby mode, she speaks decisively about the relationship. He let her down. You see that in, "You can go and burst my tiny bubble. Blow me off without a care."
She had a tiny bubble of hope in the relationship, but he glibly ignored her. So, she's going to sleep where she wants.
She's not going to be heartbroken, she's not going to "carry a torch" for him. She's sleeping with another guy.

Peter Gabriel – That Voice Again Lyrics 5 years ago
I enjoy the previous interpretations of this song and agree with them in part. There's a few things I wanted to point out.
The first is that I read that this song is a reflection of Gabriel's upbringing and having judgmental parents.
The other point is that a person can have 2 different viewpoints of a situation at the same time. It's not necessarily one is the head and one is the heart (emotion). Being in the legal profession for over 20 years, there isn't much emotion but the same set of facts can take on 2 different, 3, 4 or more different viewpoints relating to the same situation.
Gabriel is getting at the conflict in 2 key parts of the song: "And still I head that sharp tongue talking / Talking tangled words" & "I can sense the danger", "I'm hearing right and wrong so clearly". It's alluded to in other parts of the song, obviously.
It's speaks/sings to the confused, conflicted mind or the depressed, sad mind just trying to figure out what would have been the right way to handle a difficult situation.

Low – Just Make It Stop Lyrics 5 years ago
Clearly, the songwriter is frustrated and sad. How often have we thought to ourselves or heard the expression "make it stop!" ??
What does she want to make stop? (I say "she" because the lyrics are a duet sung by 2 women.)
Part of it is the struggle of life; she talks about the rope fraying. You try as hard as you can....like you try to fight against all of the challenges of life, but life pulls back so the rope has so much tension that the rope frays!
What I think is very telling is that she sings,
"You say I'm something I'm not
But I'm not what I seem
Get my back off the wall
If I could just make it stop"

What can be as heart crushing as a relationship gone wrong? She sings of a partner who has expectations that she can't meet. When we disappoint someone we love, that hurts. For this woman, she hurts even more over the misunderstanding her lover has, because she sings, "I'm not what I seem."
The chorus reflects the frustrations of life. Poor bosses, low pay, NOT making ends meet and people close to us making too many demands.
Then in the last verse she sings of hope:
"Now I'm looking up
From a ten foot hole
Seeing nothing but blue sky
Shining on my soul
As I untie the chord
And untwist the knot
We could get where we're going
If I could just make it stop"
Her setbacks have put her into a hole whether it has hurt and weakened her from a bad relationship or even if it's as bad as going into debt. She sings that maybe the misunderstanding and the unrealistic expectations will STOP, and they can climb out of the hole and up towards the blue sky AND untying that which RESTRAINS HER and her partner if only she could make her problem(s) stop!

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Lucky Man Lyrics 5 years ago
@[THFPVG:27241] good observations and I said basically the same thing.
I just have 1 minor point. I think artillery moreso than bullets was the most common way to die on battlefield. But you qualified it with "something man made". For whatever its worth I found a source

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Lucky Man Lyrics 5 years ago
I really think that this song is about a rich young man from England volunteering to fight in World War I and dying in battle by getting shot.
Why such a specific time and place and person??
Because it makes specific reference that he's rich, goes to war and dies.
During World War I, it was commonplace for the upper class to go and fight in the war. Since there hadn't been a war in Europe for a long time (prior to 1914) fighting was very romanticized.
Why England and not another nation? Because ELP is from England and this rich man is fighting for "his king". The king of UK during WWI was George V.
The song talks about how all his riches couldn't prevent the bullet from killing him. Think about 1 of the bloodiest battles ever fought in history - The Battle of Somme. UK attacks Germany at the Somme and suffers the worst single-day losses in 1 day that they ever lost in their history before or since.
That's why I think the song is about a dead soldier fighting in WWI
The rich fought in wars before and since, but it seems to me the rich of England didn't do it as widespread as they did in World War I. People, ESPECIALLY the rich, who fought in World War II had much fewer illusions that fighting in battle was the true pathway to glory. Most knew of people who died in WWI.

John Lennon – Crippled Inside Lyrics 6 years ago
I like what John says about being "crippled inside". But I think the song applies to people differently (it's a song not a miracle or a panacea, after all).
I have pretty bad depression, but if I always looked the way I felt, I would usually (about 85%) look like shit. I thinks there's something to be said about showering, grooming, putting on a brave face when you are hurting, "crippled" inside.

Don't get me wrong, I love this song by John Lennon......both the melody and the lyrics.

I was looking at another website and like someone else said the title comes from the poems by Hawk Moon. 269 is the number of mixes it took to make the song. Also, Bono was partying pretty hard in LA around the time the song was made and he described his hangover. He sings,
"When the night has no end
And the day yet to begin
As the room spins around
I need your love"

@[MDC1975:16644] They wrote the album right after the Soviet Union's Iron Curtain came down and Germany was no longer West & East Germany (where East Germany was controlled more or less by Soviet Union). U2 witnessed the Berlin Wall being taken down. So, you are right about "Never Again" could mean Nazi Germany, that period was not as long but 1 could argue even worse, but "Never Again" could mean that, and more....no longer will another nation control us like Soviet Union controlled Poland, E.Germany and the other nations in the Warsaw Pact.

U2 – Dirty Day Lyrics 7 years ago
@[iowaporsche:16643] The line, "You can hold onto something so tight, You've already lost it" I can relate to very well. There's a couple examples....instances where someone loves someone or wants something really bad. Suppose there's a guy or gal who hasn't been in love before, isn't socially adept, or coming off a bad relationship...
Have you ever seen a person "smother" or obsess over every little thing their lover does? They take pictures of them, they talk too much about them, calls her/him up in the middle of the night when your trying to sleep? Have you ever seen that?
The other person gets so tired of all the attention they leave. The obsessor "held" the other person so "tight", the other person had no choice but to get out of the relationship.
in the other instance, I knew a guy who wanted a job real bad and actually got it. He made more pay per year than he ever did in his life. He "held onto" that job "SO TIGHT". He worked 1 or 2 hours past when everyone else left. He worried himself sick over his mistakes. He not only double checked his work....he triple- and quadruple checked his work!!
After only 3 months, he's fired. Why? Because it took him so long to do the work, he wasn't productive. He wanted the job so bad, he didn't want to make a mistake, he sweated over his workproduct so badly that he was obsessed. & he was fired.
Bono talks about the person who holds on too tightly and losing it.....don't smother the one you are in love with, don't obsess, don't be so high-strung at work, you're SCARED of making a mistake.

there's some good interpretations here but I wanted to add my 2 cents to
"get it right, there's no blood thicker than ink"
I think that he was referring to writing a song, it being published. So, ink is not used like it commonly was before for newspapers, books, etc, but I think that Bono is saying to himself and other lyricists that they better not mislead their followers or say something stupid. When you have something published, you have people's attention. Say something that helps someone out even if it's a joke & you made someone laugh.

She & Him – Christmas Wish Lyrics 11 years ago
beautiful song, one that I listened to over and over and over this Christmas. The lyrics are straight forward. There's little that's hidden, obscure here.
One highlight is that the composer revels in the joy that comes with Christmas. Look at the lyric that gets repeated over and over and what ends the song, "I look at all the toys under the Christmas tree
It makes me think about the way things could be
If people all over the world could just see them too."
If only the poorest and most wretched from planet Earth could see presents for themselves just as we look at our own Christmas tree and see our presents. If only there were more joy among those in such a dire place/situation !
He also writes, "If we open our hearts, our wishes would come true
They'd come true" In reality, not necessarily true, but a sweet lyric, nonetheless, it's along the same vein of this hope and wish that things could improve. If we could improve our situation, if more people could experience the joy of Christmas.....

Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb Lyrics 11 years ago
you can say the song is about drugs as there is obviously drug references.
But there's a despair, a depression
"The child is grown,
The dream is gone."
During the times where I felt despair, I would recite those 2 lines. The fact that there is often so much hope when you are young, but then setbacks, circumstances crush that hope, crush the ambition, obliterate the idealism.
Those 2 lines really are for all those who feel terrible that dreams & hope were replaced with an ugly reality that ends up reminding them of how they didn't measure up, how they fell short, the mistakes made and those who rubbed your nose in those mistakes.
Very very painful indeed
