The simple poetry enmeshed in double/triple entendres (and how ever many more you want to creatively conceive), combined with the beat, and the fact it's sampled in one of my favourite rap tracks; I Can't Go To Sleep by Wu Tang Clang, makes this a beautiful creation.

And this is why I love Songmeanings; it totally enables lovers of music to expand their joy of their favourite music, at times effortlessly - such as this time thanks to your comment, and other times with a little digging through comments.

Prophet 600, SH-101 - the iteration and 'progression' of music. You, the creative, want to look at it like a progression, the breaking of a new day, a love for the exploration of love itself, but to the instrument it's a painful betrayal of the relationship you built up. Prophet 600 may seem like a lightswitch moment, apparently, but SH-101 was the last thing your fans were spinning as your sound, perhaps the thing that got people orbiting your sphere of presence in the first place, and has every real opportunity to kill your future - wicky wicky, as you say. Passion does not always amount to success. Moreover, better be sure you're in step with your fans if you wanna talk in (our) collectives because they, as much as your instruments, have the power to determine your ascension or downfall.

Realistically, however, music at it's depths is a constantly flowing state of change. From the beginning of it's birth to last days end it will have never stopped moving forward, evolving, iterating. And to keep up with the times, to pursue your passion etc. so must you, sacrificing your lifesblood to an undying hunger. Life is bitter-sweet in so many ways, all you can do is keep moving forward. Walk on.

It wasn't me, that was @[CaptSibigeu:18407]! I've snorted many things, but never ritalin lol. You're forgiven though, because I too confused whose comments who's.. And found myself thinking... Fuck man.. How high was I when I wrote this if I thought I was snorting ritalin....

I can confirm though, the writing above that one is definitely me, 100% my writing style and language.

Since I'm here might as make the most of it... I also don't understand why he's so mad.. And though I can appreciate girls can easily misunderstand us at the best of times, it's not exactly fair to reduce them as though they're some inferior subspecies ha.

Thoroughly enjoyed returning to this chat... Revisited "Sail" while I read

@[kimmisty50:1171] Thanks, I really appreciate that! :) there's actually a lot more to this song (+vid) - someone requested I finish the bits I left out, but they didn't even read it after I'd finished typing it all out -_-"

Let me know if you want that and I'll happily share it.

Agree with everything in the explanation but the last bit.. I think he's saying sail because that's what he does. He ponders these things but his conclusion is the always same - blame it on his ADD and then sail right on. Spot on really; try as you might, sometimes its just not possible to behave the way people want you to exactly because you have a condition, but nothings stopping them from accepting you for who you are. If they're not prepared to do that then just sailed right on!

Love how many are commenting on their own condition as though its the only true form, all conditions such as this one have a wide spectrum/different intensities. I don't have ADD but do have OCD and can still relate to the explanation, experience the same things in many cases. And yeah lol defs not an intellectual disability XD

Feist – Caught a Long Wind Lyrics 10 years ago
Absolutely beautiful song. Sublime. Timeless.
I've also added correct lyrics.

The overall message in this I believe is don't question yourself, believe in who you are, and go with your instincts. Here are my thoughts, I will use a bird as the first person as it ties in nicely with the lyrics.

Little bird
Have you got a key?
Unlock the lock
Inside of me
Where will you go
To keep yourself afloat?

Feeling old
Until the wing
Unfolded
Caught me a long wind
Where will we go
To keep ourselves afloat?

Para-1
The opening scene to this story begins with an insecure bird, feeling trapped and unsure of herself and the world. She meets a little bird and asks them if they are able to help set her free. Assume the lock is unlocked the moment she has asked for it to be. Simply being freed does not make her free at all, she is still insecure and seeks a role model in the little bird; she wants to know their path in life, how they can survive.

Para-2
Being trapped in her own cage so long, the bird feels as though she has let life escape her, until she dared to spread her wing and catch the wind. The direction of the wind is unpredictable, and the use of her wings to go in an undetermined direction represents her doing new things she has never done before. Still, the bird remains unsure of herself and so she stays by the little bird's side and looks to them for the guidance, or perhaps reassurance. "Where will we go..."

I caught a long wind
A long life wind

Hook
The wind breathed life into her existence - it gave her life. The wind in my opinion represents instinct and impulse; to go with your heart, something that requires courage, confidence and self-assertiveness - something the bird was missing. So from the end of Para-2 to the Hook the story unfolds that she has gained these things; she has found "herself". If we gather these are the things the little bird has taught the bird, we can assume, then, that its disappearance from the story is because it has followed its own path once more, with the knowledge the bird will be ok.

I got to know the sky
But it didn't know me
I got to see the land
And land on top of the sea
And be the bird and be the key
And the current tells
What the wave withheld
And the lightning sang
Of where the light would land
Where will you go
To keep yourself afloat?

I caught a long wind
A long life wind

Para-3 + Hook
And so the bird goes out with a sense of reassurement and experiences everything she can. The saying "the sky's the limit" comes to mind; she dared to dream, and dared to pursue her dreams and in so doing "got to know the sky". She saw the land - and land on top of the sea; demonstrates she travelled far and wide, even to small pieces of land in the middle of the sea. She got to be "the [little] bird" and be "the key"; she was able to free others from their little cages and set them free, and show them what it is to live!

A wave is a repetitive motion, with no place to go, its routine - her previous life - yet now she goes with the current, which has a known path and a set direction. The symbolism in the lightening I believe represents the bird having become a powerful and instinctual force in herself, and she determines where the light will land. I believe the crossover between the metaphor of a bird to elements (lightening) is to demonstrate a level of respect. We can all be liked, but there are some people in life who we unhesitantly show deep respect for, much the way we do for the powerful elements in the world. It's a metaphor to demonstrate how much she's grown.

Yet still the bird returns to those small questions of insecurity we can all face in life. This time, however, she knows the answer and so takes flight once more and follows her heart and her instincts and navigates the wind.

Like a swallow
A night owl
A little chickadee
Sad sparrow
Good morning bird
Good nightingale
I took a deep breath
And caught a long wind

The bird ends her story in a beautiful way, by telling that her existence is no different to anyone elses, all birds/people are the same, we are all capable. How? "[Take] a deep breath", trust your instincts, follow your heart, and pursue your dreams, go wherever the wind takes you.

Ok, so I've read the lyrics on the official website and listened to the track, she says what she says. But I've given this a one up because having listened to it with your lyrics, it sounds like she says this too!! XD

I really like this 'version', if you can call it that, especially "This drug in us, split the earth down" and "Alice attack". Sick ^ ^

Please people don't start arguing over this comment, I'm just saying, I like both and I kinda prefer these lyrics, even though she doesn't say it. It's my opinion, everyone's allowed one.

I've just stumbled across this song and it's blown me away. It's almost haunting; its that youthful love that for most us fell between the cracks, of which you now only catch nostalgic glimpses when songs like this come about.

Anyway, I'm surprised AlikaReine had a -1; her explanation was very good, although perhaps you need to watch the music video to appreciate it. I think AlikaReine's done a fantastic analysis so I want to expand on that - based on the music video's representation.

The song in my opinion is about wild romance and true love, heartache, loss, and growing up, underpinned by the opening line that set's the scene as her having already lost; journeying the road to recovery and reminiscing on the journey they travelled together (and that she desperately wants to turn back to).

-- this will definitely be long, so if you don't want to read a detailed analysis recommend stopping here. if you do read please share your thoughts --

I've studied film and music video's for over a decade and I have to say this music video is one of the best I've seen in years. The video is so well put together I must conclude the director worked very closely with the artist to replicate meaning of this song through moving image.

About the video: The video is strongly metaphorical and the connotations are pleasantly obvious. There is a basic narrative theory called Todorov's Theory that runs through this video, the basic outline of this is: Equilibrium, Disruption, Recognition of the disorder, attempt to repair, leading to Equilibrium once more (5 stages). Watch most films and you'll see it, it's the fabric of films that determines whether you leave the experience feeling closure and happiness, or discomfort and lack of closure. Interestingly, the video places "the lovers' [American] dream" before and after the Equilibrium which emphasises its perpetual presence, as well as possibly highlighting it as a memory/vision.

As I already noted the song opens with her pushing ahead with life but experiencing pain and loss over the decision she's had to make. When you've truly loved and lost, that person keeps returning to your thoughts and I know I've also repeatedly felt as though I hope we end up together again one day; "But I’m hoping at the gates, They’ll tell me that you’re mine" i.e. in the end we'll be together forever - "the gates" a reference to heaven.

The symbolism in the Catholic church is open to interpretation, in my view it relates to the stereotyping of a 'good, moral girl' i.e. a good upbringing and a traditional foundation. Being a representation of her moral foundation also serves as a representation of her home which based on the stereotype was likely stable. This is contrasted by his stereotypically "rebellious" image, which suggests his was likely dysfunctional. It's also important to note she's much more 'dressed' in this shot, the relevance of this is the next scene and second verse.

The second verse and the chorus is about her adolescence to love and relationship. Everything she was she gave up for this man, she changed her image, her style, her moral standpoint, and even left home to pursue this journey with him - a metaphor to emphasise sacrificing everything. She believes it'll be home if she gives herself to him "Can you make it feel like home, if I tell you you’re mine" - remember, this is her reminiscing on how she was, not how she is. It's interesting she says "if I tell you you're mine" as one would usually say "I'm yours." She may have written it this way to show her naivety, as well as the possibility she had to tell herself he was hers because he never did.

In the hook she sings the same as the verses and it's clear she's singing from her point of view. However, there is a distinct separation in her singing style in the chorus to everything else, which connotes she is reflecting on what "he" was like; 'walking on the wild side, kissing hard in the pouring rain (i.e. passionate) and insane - the way he also wanted his partner to be, like him, which is why she changed.

Verse three she reminisces from a mature perspective about how naive she had been in the way she thought and felt; trying to take what she could get by changing who she was, because she was scared if she didn't he wouldn't want her and it'd just be her, alone.

The song and video go together so well and tell the complete story. Driving the car being the metaphorical journey they travelled together. You see him making the first sexual and drug oriented moves which suggests he was the dominant influence on her.

The crash is a powerful image and represents the end to their relationship; it killed her to leave, she was the one left bleeding, broken and bruised. You see he's injured too but his is mild in comparison, his suffering begins at the point of her metaphorical death; when he must carry the knowledge it was him that ripped her to pieces and destroyed her, and all he is left with is darkness and flames. There is also a much milder, unintentional undertone of realisation that he must know it's her that's moving on and getting better having 'gone on to the next life'.

Read AlikeRaine's comment for a more apt analysis. This song is absolutely not as you have described, albeit I appreciate it's possible to make biblical references to it, given the size of the bible, you can do that for most things.
