The English Beat – Save It For Later Lyrics 10 years ago
yeah, pearl jam led me here, because I'm guessing eddie liked the Who's version. Which I assumed was the original until I found this. Music is such a portal that leads you backward toward the beginning, the most beautiful part about it. It always seemed to me to mean: yeah this isn't going to work, this is going to break, but lets wait until tomorrow, don't end it yet. In terms of a relationship. Hearing Betterman live is always a great thing but when he tacks this on... it's a pure thing of beauty. You can feel it when he sings it.

The Hold Steady – First Night Lyrics 10 years ago
Great tune, the music alone is so beautiful. And sad. One thing I want to know -- craig sings about so many girls/women in his life. Now I love Craig Finn. I'd probably marry him if our relationship could be platonic (I'm a guy). But how does this guy have so many women in/from his life? I know being a rock star is probably a huge part of it but he doesn't exactly look like Johnny Depp (women feel free to weigh in here and yes I know intelligence and musical ability are supposedly sexy to women so don't remind me that I am/have neither). But he must have some magic secret, that, as an average looking dude on my best day (and that's a compliment from a lying person, I'd like to know) I mean he seems like the kind of guy that would meet/be with one woman but there are a thousand different names in all the songs and he seems like he writes from a place of experience as much as anything (which is creepy if you listen to Chips Ahoy enough, as I have). That comment only because I just love this song and its true and what else is there to say? Craig, yes that's an official proposal if you read this. I live in MA so we could pull it off. Just saying, you wouldn't have to be faithful. Just -- free concert tix would be in the prenup. Also any thoughts on how he seems very religious but experienced with drugs, and lots of them? I read an interview where he said he regularly goes to church.... so...

The Hold Steady – We Can Get Together Lyrics 10 years ago
Wow I never knew any of that stuff, so thanks guys, I did assume "Makes no sense at all" was a lyric, band or track. Just the way he phrases it. I always wondered if this was a song about someone craig knew, or didn't know or just a sad treatise about people that die too young. Those seven words might be the best definition of heaven I've heard though.

The Hold Steady – You Can Make Him Like You Lyrics 10 years ago
I never thought of the double meaning of LIKE. That's genius whoever posted it. I like the interpretation I didn't think about almost more than the obvious one. I think there are girls who get into a serious relationship so young, that they mature without being able to define themselves as a whole without someone else, so like somebody said -- when you want to travel and have fun and carefree you choose that kind of boyfriend, when you want a house and kids, you change boyfriends. I don't think it's sad what she's doing to the boyfriends (hey they weren't innocent) I think its sad she can't be comfortable alone. That's why I love the line "you only have a problem when you start sleeping alone" -- which implies you clearly have a problem if you're not cool sleeping alone, at least for a while. Anyone older than 20 knows girls/women like this. its the ones that on FB never have to change their relationship status to single, haha, because they swing from guy to guy like monkey bars (anyone under twenty will probably not know what those are because kids today "play" on facebook) Great song, great band. Wish they toured more in the Northeast.

The Hold Steady – Stuck Between Stations Lyrics 10 years ago
Yeah the great thing about the Hold Steady is you wonder about a lyric and google it and its a line from a novel or a book or a another song. This got me into reading Berryman, which I suggest. Kerouac I already loved. Finn is amazing with words, reminiscent of an early bruce with a more serious tone. I wish they had more stuff out. I don't know if there's a band in america that's more pure rock and roll, I mean they're not some alt, or grunge or punk band just rock. The Foo Fighters maybe but people now pretend to hate them because they were successful and liking a band that makes money isn't cool. Hopefully (and not hopefully) this will happen to the Hold Steady. The first six lines are so true.

The Gaslight Anthem – Great Expectations Lyrics 10 years ago
Never knew Estrella was from Great Expectations, so thanks for that guys. Anyone ever hear "Everybody lives so, why, why wouldn't you?" Which could mean two things: the singer is dead and the love of his life is living on without him and/or they're seperated and she's moving on. Taillights/old life is the only thing that makes me think it could be a metaphor for death and rebirth. I think it's leaves too but both are interesting. The line about a consolation sigh is great. Bartenders and diner employees must see so many stood-up guys and girls. Any thoughts on the name behind the band? If you've never heard of "gaslighting," google the term. And if you don't know where bruce played his first audition for a record contract, google that too. Both are interesting and possible reasons for their name. I've never seen an interview where he disclosed the reason for the name so if anyone has I'd be interested.

The Gaslight Anthem – American Slang Lyrics 10 years ago
Never made the American connection, always thought it was literal. I think it's cool someone from outside the US saw that. I mean I have a dead father and a girls name tattooed on my arm so... it's all how your relate to music I guess. I never understood the American Slang lyric but figured it must be important if they named the album that. Interesting insight. I think the queen and cards lyrics about how women or girls always hold the cards in a situation and you can never really tell. Is it "taught" or "told" me (as in leave) drive. If its taught I'd think it could be about his Mom. There's no real romantic lyrics. *that would be too eddie vedder esque* The cards/queen stanzas remind me of Hold Steady lyrics: "In the end only the girls know the whole truth." One of my favorites. The GA will be the next estreet band. I like when people tell you that's bs because someday they'll be wrong and quiet and it makes me happy. Bruce wasn't famous after three albums either. If any of you like them and want more check out The band THIS CHARMING MAN on itunes, its brians older band and sounds like the GA and they're good. Hold you over until they come out with a new album.

Man gotta be one of the great GSA songs. Fallon works so many allusions into his lyrics. Yeah -- sleep on the beach is from bruce. Little Eden is a reference to Asbury, which was founded to be a "little eden" on the shore. I've slept on that beach, haha, partly out of economic necessity and partly to say... "i've slept on that beach." I don't know if the 4th st. payphone is still there. Cookman's got some beautiful houses. I think it's funny that he calls every girl he met "maria." I read somewhere that Bruce originally used actual names in his songs (there is a rare version of Thunder Road with a another name, I forget which). In Red Bank, where Brian lived and I used to live, there's a heavy mexican population (they are not fat, just there's a lot of them). So it's funny he changed mary to maria. Great town. Who hasn't gazed at houses with some girl talking about which one they'd buy someday? Great lyrics.

great tune, love the anger. Who is this woman that left the next greatest rock star of our generation and can we have sentenced to a lifetime of shame and regret? I'm guessing she's living it already. Saw Brian and the guys at the Pony once, great show. With the hold steady -- dream lineup.

The Horrible Crowes – Sugar Lyrics 10 years ago
Great song. I can't see it being about cocaine, as I think fallon is pretty religious I can't see him being with a drug addict. Never thought of that though. I think its him getting the last laugh, which is great. It struck me that maybe she was just with him cuz he's a rock star (my love was a season that you wore..." -- what's your horrible crows tattoo? That's gotta be sick -- I have a GSA one. I used to live in Red Bank and run into Brian on ocassion out and he was like the coolest most down to earth guy in the world. He asked where we lived (gf at the time) and then he's like oh I live on such and such a street. I was like dude you're a rock star my gf is going to be camped out on your lawn. Really cool. Hard to miss him with the tats in public. He was behind me in line at the PJ 20 trailer.

The Gaslight Anthem – The Navesink Banks Lyrics 11 years ago
Love this song. I think it's about going into something a relationship, even though you know it's doomed to fail, because you can't resist. Didn't know the Dante thing, so thanks for that guys. I lived in the same town as Brian Fallon, the Navesink is a river. You could hit it with a stone from my dilapadated house on the wrong side of the tracks. We used to walk by it, catch blue crabs, bring a bottle of wine and stay in an abandoned gazeebo til sunrise. Met him a couple times there. Great tune.

Pearl Jam – Wishlist Lyrics 11 years ago
I think I mean relationships are always in flux, you could be loved one day and alone the next. But your Christmas ornaments, your car's brakes, those are pretty reliable. So I think it's saying, I wish you could depend upon me as much as you can other things, and know I'll always be there. The alien/sun thing I don't get, though. Unless it's being removed from that need to depend upon someone else, out there in the midst of nothing.

Pearl Jam – Bushleaguer Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this shows Vedder's intelligence despite any formal education. It takes courage to write a song against a specific person, especially the president instead of just something vague. Agree or disagree, it's a bold statement. I once heard a concert where Ed said "If they elect Bush again people are going to storm into the streets to riot." Well, it took a while, but Occupy seems to be pretty much what he predicted.

The Hold Steady – Citrus Lyrics 11 years ago
To me this song is dedicated to hypocrits. Like those condemning pre-marital sex or drinking. Like, bars are places where people meet, have a good time, so what's wrong with that? And like is love any less meaningful without a ring on your finger. I think he's saying like "You know all these things you think are sins, well maybe they're actually a few of the remaining good things in our lives," And pointing out the actual bad things like drugs and guns with biblical imagery I think is genius. Love these dudes. Just pure rock.

The Hold Steady – You Can Make Him Like You Lyrics 11 years ago
I mean, think about it. If you're a beautiful woman, you've got the world at your fingertips. There is some rich person out there that will do anything and everything for you just to be with you. And all you've got to do is put out. And I think beautiful girls are faced with that indecision. Do I take advantage of this, or be who I am and find someone I care about regardless of my looks? And I think this song is about the girl that's like "Hell, I'm hot, I don't need to do anything except be hot and some guy, whoever he is, will take care of the rest." But it only gets inconvenient when you have to go home alone," I think that means there will always be an emptiness inside you unless you ignore the superficial and just be who you are.

Pearl Jam – W.M.A. Lyrics 11 years ago
I don't think it's even as defined as racism. Take a white guy in a suit and a white guy in ripped jeans with a mohawk. Who is going to get harrassed. You don't have to be black. I think it's like about people with power that abuse it. Police, politicians, whoever. I love it when he changes it up to tackle Bush or McCain. It's like "So yeah I want to wear ripped jeans and you have a badge and a gun, what right does that give you to strip or deny me of freedom, did I shoot anybody?" You know, a cop can go 90 mph and not worry, while the rest of us watch our speedometers. "He can do no wrong," And there are some amazingly brave and honorable policemen out there, but like with anything, there are those that abuse the privelage and it's a shame, especially since the rest of us stand to lose from it.

Pearl Jam – Given to Fly Lyrics 11 years ago
Yeah this has been said, I see, but definitely I see the bible in this. "Floated back down?" That seems to me Jesus descending after being crucified. "Stripped and stabbed?" Didn't that happen to Jesus. It's like a person that's above, morally and spiritually the rest of us, flying above all the shit we deal with on a regular, trying without success to show us that we're sometimes our own worst enemies. I think it's at the same time about people that weren't meant to be bound by chains to the cotidian humdrum shuffle and want to fly. That have some part of that religious understanding in them.

Pearl Jam – Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is about: like we all go through phases in life, teenager, college, adult. And like you separate them in your mind. Then you go back to a place and it brings you back to a time. And it's like "damn, I'd forgotten that whole period of my life and it meant something to me, but I've lived so many lives since I've lost it, and it's a shame that isn't still ingrained in me as part of the fabric of my soul." Even though it might be to a degree. I think it's like you go into this grocery store and there's this woman that always asked how you were doing and told you about her kids and you knew her name and her favorite cigarette and now you walk back in and it's like "Shit, that was a part of my life that completely fell away from my memory and I can't even remember her name." I think it's about wanting to live a lot of lives, but being sad that they couldn't all just be one, even though in a way they are.

Pearl Jam – Come Back Lyrics 11 years ago
Man this song is so damn sad it's beautiful. TO me, it's reminiscent of "wish you were here," like- what's sadder than a person you care about that could be there but isn't. The absence of humanity has got to be the depth of despair. The image of keeping a door open and no one walking through it, time and time again, just breaks your heart. An open empty door. Plus the imagery of a dream conversation, and the shattering awakening to a reality that the doorway's still empty. Just a way to wrap words around a heart-wrenching emotion we've all undoubtedly felt.

Pearl Jam – Better Man Lyrics 11 years ago
Yeah, I don't think the "red," has any significance as such. It's just a vibrant color that means life in so many ways, love, death, blood. I mean "She dreams in color she dreams in orange," wouldn't seem terribly meaningful would it? I always remember that book "the giver" where they don't have color in their worlds, so they don't know what it is, and the first color they see is an apple, and it's red. I think Red is just symbolic of the beauty of color, regardless. I thought it was funny that he used this song as analogous to the nation's relationship with Bush. It was like "is this guy the best for us?" No but he's pledging to protect us from terrorists so let's vote for him again. It's like "Is this the best man for me, no but hell I don't want to be alone." It's funny how if a song is written truly enough, meaning can come to it, before it even has that meaning. I think it's about a guy that makes a woman feel like such a piece of shit she feels like she's lucky to be with such a piece of shit. Something too terribly common in the world. Lift people up and they'll do the same.

The Gaslight Anthem – We Came to Dance Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm guessing Fallon pulled the line from Springsteen's song, though, since he's a Jersey guy. He probably knew the history of it though. Sometimes I think he uses too many allusions and he's just piecing together other songs into one. Still love it though. And when you hear it, and know where it's from, it's like you're in the know. This song just spells Rock N' Roll to me. It's like "Hey we're not hear to bemoan our celebrity, break guitars, ruin dressing rooms, we came to dance and have a good time." If that's not your bag, there's the door. THE GLA to me is just a good band bringing back rock for Rock's sake. Rock and roll, to me, is only meant to be rock and roll. Fun, loud, and a party. Not drugs, destruction and anger. Maybe angst, or justified indignation, but not screaming.

Love this song. You always hear about the guys in high school that never amount to anything after being popular. Wind up used car salesmen. But what about the "hot girl" from high school, who was head cheerleader and winds up divorced and broken, begging for her popularity back. I think that is what this song's about. I think decent hardworking honest people survive, and shallow people that thrive on attention wind up wishing for the "glory days" back when all that mattered was who got invited to the most parties

scars, like the number of the stars. Pearl Jam, Springsteen, lyricists as good as Fallon are a one-in-a-million occurrence. Love "Trying to be a man, tough just like your father." Because guys, all of us know we probably hold our father as the image of absolute masculinity, even though he's just a human being. And you spend your life trying to live up to that God of a human that held you on his knee. I think the Boxer is him. A guy that kept getting hit but kept getting back up. And he's remembering when he knew himself that way. And how he's changed. Stitches on the radio is a great line.

The Gaslight Anthem – Even Cowgirls Get the Blues Lyrics 12 years ago
This is a great song. I think it's about how like people mature at different rates. Like some people are 30 and still want to hang out, have fun, have another beer, go surfing, stay up all night, and some people get to a point where they're like "I want a warm glass of milk and to see who's on Letterman." And I think it's the one saying to the other "Come on, what happened? Why aren't we out doing shots, what happened to the good old days?" Yeah, Little Eden, when they built Asbury Park, they wanted it to be this paradise on the shore, and it got that nickname. Every GLA song is so packed with allussions you never get tired of finding them and having that "ahh that's what he meant," feeling.

The Gaslight Anthem – Blue Jeans and White T-Shirts Lyrics 12 years ago
Love this song. Couple thoughts. One, Springsteen refers to every girl in his songs as Mary. I lived in Red Bank, NJ, where Fallon grew up, and there's a thriving mexican population. Maybe Brian took a note from the Boss and just changed Mary to Maria. We lived on the wrong side of the tracks in Red Bank and were the only white people on our street. It was a safe and fun neighborhood, but very ethnic. Secondly, I love the "sleep on the beach" lyrics. I read somewhere that when Springsteen was starting out, he was so poor he'd sleep on the beach during the day and play clubs all night. So living in NJ I was like "hell that's a great way to save on rent," so I tried it for a while after my lease expired. I slept on the beach, no one bothers you in the morning and afternoon. And hung out around the area all night. Public restrooms, beer, etc. I wouldn't try it for long though. You're either sunburnt or wet when it rains. A roof isn't absolutely necessary, but it's pretty convenient. Once met Brian and offered to have him back to our place for a few beers, he was busy, but hell it was worth a try. Next day he was getting out of his car on the street side as I was driving by and he stepped into traffic and I nearly took him out. You're welcome gaslight anthem fans for swerving and preserving the life of the band.

The Gaslight Anthem – The '59 Sound Lyrics 12 years ago
Love this song because it's such a unique way to look at loss. Like, he's looking at it through music. "I wonder which song, they'll play when we go?" It's like you see the world through music as a lens, and death is no exception. It's not like "will it be an open casket, what should I wear, will I cry?" It's like "What song will they play." Because music is the most important thing to you, that's the first thing you think about when you consider loss. God I hope they play a song that attempts to do your life some justice. ANd it's so cool because you know he didn't have to think about this much, it's just how he considers death, and an artists perception, if they're good, never gets old. It always makes you think.

Love this song. It's like such a thing all guys go through. You fall in love in middle school, in high school, in college. and if you're lucky, like me, you wind up with the girl you were meant for all along. You treat her like a princess then you get to say to the other girls: "This is what you missed out on, and you know what, I'm not even bitter and heartbroken because I found the you that wasn't you that I'd been waiting for all along. Hope you're having fun without me." It's like a fuck-you song without any anger. I hear so much of backstreets in this. Obviously Fallon loves Springsteen. Hiding on the Backstreets and "In the back seat just trying to find some room for our knees," seem to be about the same thing, trying to find some place to fit, whether it's a car or an alley. Love the GLA

The Gaslight Anthem – Bring It On Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song kind of has equal parts insecurity and confidence. Like, yeah, he wants her back, but at the same time he's saying "Hey if somebody else's love is so much better than mine then go take it." Bring it on. Like he knows he's the best thing for her, and she doesn't, and she's going to be the one with regrets. So many of Brian's songs are about some girl that left him. WHy the hell would you leave Brian Fallon? I've met him a couple times, we lived in the same town. He's such a humble cool dude. Last time I saw him he was with a gorgeous woman, so maybe living well is the best revenge.

Foo Fighters – My Hero Lyrics 12 years ago
Love this song. I think it's been overplayed, wish it was a deep album track that only the faithful appreciated, but how can you stop a great song from becoming popular? For me, I think of people like my father. Just an ordinary guy that works his ass off. Who is your hero? Some guy that can slam dunk or make a million dollars? Some hollywood actor? $#%# that @#!$, the people in your everday lives that support and protect you should be your heroes. Cried when I heard this in concert. My dad has cancer, still works his ass off, I remember watching him go out the door to work at like 6 am. There goes my hero, damn it.

Foo Fighters – The Deepest Blues Are Black Lyrics 12 years ago
I definitely think this song is about a relationship, with a person. It seems to me like someone that wants to trust the other person, but knows they can't. "Will you do, the thing you've always done?" He seems like he wants so badly to believe she'll (or he'll) change their ways for him or her, but subtly knows they won't. And you get the blues when you think about it, and when it gets closer to reality, it becomes a black. Funny, and probably know connection, but remind's me of Pearl Jam's BLACK, a song about losing someone to someone else. "Why can't you be mine?" You could see that lyric in this song I think. Love Dave and the Foos. He seems so light-hearted and funny in person, or at a concert, but his lyrics are always so dark and meaningful. Never understood the contradiction. Maybe he's just been through so much with Curt and Nirvana that he's like "fuck it I'm going to have fun." I always thought rock and roll was about just and only being exactly what it was. A party for no reason, because... it's a party. And The foo fighters embody that for me.
