Black Sabbath – God Is Dead? Lyrics 5 months ago
A few other important things to note about Nietzsche: he was trained as a theologian, which is what informed his ideas about God and why he was so obsessed with the idea of a dead God, and the God is dead quote was actually from a character of his, Zarathustra, though he was using Zarathustra as a mouthpiece. Finally, Niethzche's nihilistic existentialism is a direct result of his atheism, it's interesting to compare his philosophy with Kierkegaard's (a devout Christian) as a result.

Black Sabbath – God Is Dead? Lyrics 5 months ago
@[Yobbo14:20783]

Nietzche was definitely an atheist, but that's not what the God is Dead quote is about. You need to understand the historical context, where at the time most philosopher's were theists, but they were also naturalists. That's what Nietzche was criticizing, he's saying God had no purpose in their model. In another quote, he said he could believe in a dancing god, as it's the dead god of the philosophers he found absurd, but he was still an atheist.

Black Sabbath – God Is Dead? Lyrics 6 months ago
@[Yobbo14:20075] It should be noted that Nietzche's quote is often misinterpreted. It's not a statement that God doesn't exist, and it's not just saying God is irrelevant in non-existent in the eye of culture, but that God is DEAD, meaning he's very much a part of culture, but in a very static way. If God were alive, metaphorically speaking, people would still believe in miracles instead of explaining them away with science, that is the point he was getting at.

All Shall Perish – There is Nothing Left Lyrics 6 months ago
Seems to be a response to "you saved my life" type of comments many bands get, in turn saying "you don't need me to save your life, you only saved yourself".

Thrice – Black Honey Lyrics 7 months ago
The great part about this song is how sardonic it is about the narrator's lack of understanding of cause of effect. "I DON"T GET IT! WHY DO I KEEP GETTING STUNG?"

submissions
Low – Murderer Lyrics 7 months ago
The core message of the song is self-deprecation. The narrator is begging for God to use them as a murderer, because they feel that's all they are capable of contributing. By murdering for God they are trying to repent, they have no more concern for themselves at this point, thinking they're going to die soon. It's not about the murder as much as about submission to God; while the song does show a dark side of God, the act of murder is chosen because it's an act which will destroy the murderer as it's such a disgusting, immoral act. What it is NOT about is religious fanaticism, that's people completely missing the point because they came from a non-spiritual background, so they're just associating with their perceptions of religion.

Hozier – Take Me to Church Lyrics 8 months ago
People often misinterpret this song as being anti-religious, but it's much more complex than that. I don't think it has a single logically coherent narrative because it's a rush of emotions, the man simultaneously both loves and loaths church due to his relationship with it.

Did you even read my comment beyond the first line? I addressed all the stuff about suicide. Anyway, this song was clearly meant to be read through the eyes on Armenian ethnicity considering the Armenian flag is thrown during the music video, and some of it's lyrics were allegedly taken from a poem by Father Armeni.

Marilyn Manson – Cryptorchid Lyrics 1 year ago
A cryptorchid is a male born without a full set of testicles. This song is literally about a "worm" overtaking a boy, and it's part of the "Inauguration of the Worm" cycle. The boy, the worm, and the cryptorchid all seem to be the same entity. Seems like the backstory for the antichrist.

Do any of you people even know what muzak is? It's a synonym for elevator music. Replace "music" with "muzak" in the first line, and it makes twice as much sense. The song is complaining about how music has been replaced with muzak.

Tool – Parabola Lyrics 2 years ago
While it's almost certainly unintentional, especially given Maynard's thoughts on organized religion, I just released the lyrics to this song are Mormon as hell. It appears to contain the theological concepts of premortal agency (We are choosing to be here right now), the veil (We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment), body/spirit duality (This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal), the divine purpose of life is to be happy (Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing), and eternal life (Remember. We are eternal.).

Disturbed – The Night Lyrics 2 years ago
I think that in order to understand this song you need to understand Draiman's heritage. Looking at the chorus, there is the line "Are you going to deny the savior
In front of your eyes". While I do think this line alludes to Jesus, I doubt it's referring to Jesus considering Draiman is not only a Jew, but on non-practicing one. Rather, we need to look at the Jewish concept of Messiah. There are actually multiple Jewish saviors prophesied, the first of which is Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, the son of Isaiah, the second is Cyrus, the Persian King who freed the Jews from Babylonian captivity, and then there is the legendary Messiah. Here the savior being referenced is a personification of the night. Looking at the line "are you going to remain a slave for
The rest of your life" seems to allude to the fact the Jews were literally freed from slavery by Cyrus. I think this is extending the jewish idea of the savior of their people, but here it's emphasizing that dark is not evil. From a christian perspective, I think it's similar to how the Jews rejected Jesus because they found him to be a heretic, and thus dark, even though he was the savior.

The Beatles – Yesterday Lyrics 2 years ago
This song actually sucks and is a demonstration of terrible lyricism. Notice the line "Oh, yesterday came suddenly". However, in the narrative being shown in the song, TODAY came suddenly and he longs for Yesterday. The Beatles just lack the intelligence to notice that, or they knew their fans wouldn't be smart enough to pick that up.

Tool – Stinkfist Lyrics 2 years ago
Literally the song is about progressively more depraved fisting, figuratively it's about how the media desensitizes us and ultimately destroys. In the space between, I think it makes an excellent song about pornography addiction, and Maynard's voice is the perfect voice for satan, pretty sure there was a reason he was chosen for that role in the bikini movie. From that angle, it's like a duet between satan as the tempter and the man being tempted.

Tool – Pushit Lyrics 3 years ago
The song is almost certainly about an abusive/destructive relationship, but you need to be shallow to the point of stupidity to think any relationship must be based around sex, let alone the one in this song. More likely, it sees to be between parent and child, if it's even between two different people. As another commenter said, it may be between two different personas of one person.

Tool – Pushit Lyrics 3 years ago
"yes, "stinkfist" is about penetration, but he is talking about penetrating someone until they open up completely, much like the theme to "4 degrees". "

WTF, that's not what the song is about AT ALL. It's seems you based that entirely on the line "I'll keep digging Till I feel something." which is like saying Harry Potter is about how morality is bunk because Voldemort said “There is no good and evil, there is only power and those too weak to seek it.” There are many ways to interpret the song, but the way you are interpreting it is a 180 from the intended meanings, the key is that the "fisting" in the song is destructive. And yes, it IS a metaphor, no quotes needed, it's a metaphor for the media and how it's destroys are sensitivity through mindless sensationalism.

Deftones – Sextape Lyrics 3 years ago
Now that you've actually posted an interpretation rather than just an extremely condescending yet vapid comment you've gone up a few points in my book.

I love Deftones, one of my favorite bands, but I'm slightly less fond of their lyrics. I respect the poetic aspects, I just don't relate to most of their specific meanings (well, as specific as they get) as life expiriences and Chino Moreno's (and the rest of Deftones) are very different, we come from quite different backgrounds and I'm not as old and experienced as him. In relation to this song, I've had experiences with romance, but not with sex as I'm choosing to remain chaste until marriage (plus my current girlfriend is aesexual anyway). In interpreting this song I didn't closely analysis this lyrics, just focused on the romantic feelings the song gives, a few lines that stuck out while skimming over the whole thing, and the title in relation to those factors. I'm by no means the most emotionally intelligent person around (in fact I'm mildly autistic), but I can do that much. I think it's okay to tackle the song in that manner because if I recall correctly Chino Moreno said his lyrics are more meant to invoke feelings than tell a concrete narrative, and can be interpreted multiple ways (don't see why Digital Bath is an exception, it has clearer narrative than most the songs, but it's still got stronger emotional undercurrents that suggest a deeper meaning). An easy example is "Rocket Skates", where I have no idea what's going on with the title, but it's full of a mixture of violent and sexual imagery, including some double entendre like "I like you red, soaking wet", so the song can be interpreted multiple ways.

"They all secretly want to be dominated in the bedroom" The "they all" part is rather sexist, and how you supposed to know what all people secretly want, but otherwise good insight. Real nice insight into the sex tape thing.

"Overall the song is a motivation track to make people have sex more and watch less pornographic videos. (the sound of the waves collide, TONIGHT!)" Well, it does sound like he's trying to get someone to have sex with him again, but I don't think the song is that preachy. Those seem like a message Chino would send though, and a pretty positive one. Sex is something often demonized by the focus on pornography, but it's really beautiful thing.

"He used current tense terms. " Didn't notice that before, but I don't see how the implies it's referring to current events rather than a personal experience. Anyway, "Take me one more time" is the part that implies the past, as it's one MORE time. I didn't say reliEving emotion, I said reliving emotion. He's going through the experience of the first time again, and tonight he's going to do it a another time. He usually just relives it in his head, but now he's "out of [his] head".

I think your explanation is plausible, but the song seems too subtle for it to be trying to push such a message to the world. In the very least I think it has multiple meanings. The things you said about sex and pornography certainly are important. I'm not sexually active now, but I'll keep that in mind when/if (haha) I start getting it on.
