The Mars Volta – Miranda, That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore Lyrics 9 years ago
@[cassandragemini5:2445] TMV gave up drugs right around the time of their first album due to a friend's death. Their older material (At The Drive In) is very heavily drug influenced, but not this.

Haken – As Death Embraces Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is just the epitome of musical emotion. I feel the speaker is feeling lost, not knowing what to do with his life. He scrambles for answers throughout the album, wanting to become somebody important, but it never seems to happen despite his best efforts. It's really tragic, but this tragedy is expressed in the music.

I recently found out about this song and wow, he really sounds different in my recording. Talk about amazing lyrics though. Very classicly JD.

I think this song may be about remembering times in your past. You want to not forget them, but even the ones you do will come to the surface whether you like it or not. It's all about preservation.

This isn't really true. He's said many times that the only autobiographical albums are The Sunset Tree and We Shall all be Healed. Outside of those two albums, I have no idea what's going through his head.

The Mars Volta – Empty Vessels Make The Loudest Sound Lyrics 11 years ago
I know this was written before the breakup, but it almost sounds like Cedric's attempt to say goodbye to the band. Lines like "If I trust in the wind..." show that he is wondering if he has to go in a different direction. Similarly, "the rest I deserve" could mean that after 11 or so years of TMV work he wanted to take a rest, which was seen by the band's hiatus. Then, another line like, " Of the flowers that grew" shows the good things that have sprouted up, even if he was sort of playing second fiddle to Omar for most of the time the band was around (it is well known that Omar was controlling and wanted to write all the music and let Cedric write lyrics).

Just a thought.

Beardfish – Without You Lyrics 11 years ago
This could really be about almost anything, but to me it brings to mind the thought process of someone who is left at home while their husband/wife is out on a long trip, or perhaps playing with their band.

Dream Theater – Cover My Eyes Lyrics 11 years ago
Definitely an awesome song. This was during the phase of Dream Theater where they were being pressured to write a few "radio songs" (see "You Not Me" and "Burning My Soul"). I wonder if this was some sort of response to that...or maybe it's just a cool song with no real meaning. I don't know.

No, she was murdered. It's part of the concept album.

Beardfish – Green Waves Lyrics 11 years ago
For me, the song is a metaphor. The narrator/song writer is a sailor on the seas of his life, realizing finally that he is going to die soon enough ("moving towards the beyond"/"Realized I wasn't immortal"/"It's all coming back to me"). This song is a look back at his life, his feelings, and almost a tribute to what he's done, and ultimately the realization, as aforementioned, that he is going to die.

I also think it is interesting that he mentions not being given wings. I wonder if this is the writers way of saying that if he had wings he could have escaped all of this and lives his life differently, or that he could have gotten to "heaven" faster?

Those are just my thoughts as I listen to this now for the thousandth time without really wondering about the lyrics.

This is truly one of the most heartwrenchingly sad songs ever penned. John, I'm so sorry for whatever caused you to write this. It's just pure, unfiltered sadness. So beautiful in it's desperation and honesty.

I just listened to this for the hundredth or so time, and I broke down for the first time, like it was the first time I'd ever heard it.

Not sure what it's actually about, but the first stanza sounds a LOT like House of Leaves.

Beardfish – Sleeping In Traffic Lyrics 11 years ago
This is all dreams being experienced by the protagonist on the concept album. He falls through each dream, telling us what he is experiencing, and by the time it ends he has learned some lessons. I love this song, one of my top 10 of all time.

The Mountain Goats – Song for Lonely Giants Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is all about adjusting to being on your own. No one is around to help you, you are always alone, and you have to rely on yourself to provide some entertainment. Sometimes you hope that you can escape for a while, and you take a big leap of faith (fall through the air, hoping to float). But, in the end, you just grow older, get bitter, and learn that life is not always everything it is promised to be.

The Mountain Goats – Moon Over Goldsboro Lyrics 11 years ago
Without a doubt in my mind this is one of the most meaningful songs he has released in years. You can tell he is just writhing with emotion in this song by the way he holds back his voice. Not only that, but the lyrics are just masterfully created. This is probably the best chorus ever penned.

The Mountain Goats – Half Dead Lyrics 11 years ago
When things get tough in life, you have no choice but to remove yourself from the situation and hope for the best. Here, Darnielle or his character feels like they need to erase what happened in the past and move on, but they are constantly haunted in a way by their old lover/mate/family member.

I love what he does with this song and the electric guitar too by the way.

The Mountain Goats – New Monster Avenue Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song, like most of the album, is about someone who feels they are all alone in the world due to various circumstances...sometimes beyond their control, sometimes not. They are afraid of the way they see the world, and how the world sees them.

The Mountain Goats – Wild Sage Lyrics 11 years ago
In that concert mentioned below, he said that this song was his first real attempt at writing about mental illness, so that confirms that it is at least about something related to that field.

For me, this is all about someone who is struggling with the differences between reality and fiction. They are constantly wavering between the two worlds, and gain life experiences along the way...for better or worse.

Dream Theater – Scarred Lyrics 12 years ago
See, I have a different thought on the meaning of this song. The narrator is going through a tough bout with a disease or something and his wife/spouse is not there to comfort him/her. As seen by the "thirty years" part and rising and falling of their marriage. You could also go into the literal meanings of "blood heal me" being transfusions, and "fear change me" being his experiences in this situation changing them for the better.

I mean parts of it start to fall apart, and it is not the perfect interpretation, but it is the one I have been getting lately (been listening to the song for probably close to 8 years now).

The Mars Volta – Trinkets Pale of Moon Lyrics 12 years ago
While I am not completely sure what this is about, it just struck me (after looking up some of the more obscure words in here) that it mentions old, aging things (usually regal in nature) several times. I know it mentions trinkets in the title, but I feel like there is more to it. I think it may be about the narrator losing someone important to them, or the narrator killing someone. For example, they mention "I burn the clothing before I dig into the ground." So, they are burning the evidence before burying them. Then they mention they sing a song before burying them (their epicedium). Plus, they keep saying "your going to wish you hadn't run" which could be interpreted as saying "this is what you get for being a coward" or just "this is what you get for running away."

Something like that.
