Soundgarden – Head Down Lyrics | 12 years ago |
iwas_at nailed it. It's hard to see a 'happy go lucky' especially if, like so often in our time, other people have to work so hard to support them and they can be so carefree about life.(not that that's what you were sayin) I myself have staunched the happiness of a loved one who seems to live in a sort of peewees playhouse sort of mentality. I don't want to, but the world demands and the price is heavy for those who are slow to grow up into responsibility. Another side of me kicks myself and is heavily grieved/ashamed for my consultation because her stream of happiness is what brings so much life into my sometimes dreary responsibility laden reality. I'm a 39 year old professional singer/lead guitarist. Started playing in nightclubs at age 16, smoking weed since age 9 so i know full well about how that favorite song is what sustains our happiness in a world that can seem hopeless. My advice is: choose your place in the scheme, play your role but do not make a self out of any of it. Don't make an identity out of it because it is a very confined/limited program the world offers and that includes the happiness we are emotionally attached to even in the form of the entertainment we use as an escape mechanism. Meditate, deal with your fears, be willing to feel your pain without grabbing a hold of it and making a self/ identity out of it, give to others, and always remember that you could be in their shoes, you could have been born them instead of you. Choose compassion. |

"Harvest the fold" "For the rest of the slide"-first hook "For the rest of the ride"= 2nd hook "Heroes and Stretchers" not "stretches" [misinterpretation is due to his accent] "Blowing to pieces" [to comes out "ta" [common american slang] Hope this clears things up some. |

A good listen easily reveals that it isn't "heroes and scriptures." Religion is only part of the equation. He is painting a picture of an actual wreck for the listener despite all of the meaning we try to derive from the song. Get out your headphones people, you all have ears. Turn them down and your ears won't be so fried. I am a 33 year singer/guitarist. Discreet listening has been my practice for that long. |

Swallowing rivers is a reference to channeling the power in the world into the belly of the controlling exploiters. Why do you think the Rockefellers, Rothchilds, Warburgs, Morgans, Vatican, Queen of England, etc... hold the majority of the worlds wealth? Keep up your research and it will become clear to you. |

If it's harvest the souls then it's a reference to what angels do. You can find the idea of soul harvest of the dead in christian religion or occult tradition and elsewhere. I'm not going to discredit the Sumerian record or the idea of the possible and logical idea of the creation of/domestication/exploitation of man by the et's but i believe you are missinf the the simplicity of what he is saying through a misunderstanding of the words he is pronouncing Maximan. |

Maximan, stretchers is how someone with Chris' accent says stretchers. Stretchers are for victims to be transported to the hospital or morg. |

Get out even a cheap set of headphones Maximan and you will agree that he's not saying "harness" at all, the word is "harvest" and the "v" sound is very easy to hear even without a pair of phones. They are harvesting something. Sorry man. |

He is not gold, it is not even fall. He says "Fold", listen for the "D", it is clear and unmistakeable. |

I'm sorry Maximan715, but i have a very discreet ear and he is not saying gold, not even once. The sound he makes on the word is an unmistakeable "F". Listen with a high quality pair of headphones [mine are a $325.00 pair of Roland] and you'll realize that "G" and "f" are not easily confused by the ear. It is either fall or fold my friend. |

I want to add that Chris says slide on the first hook and ride on the second. |

Through discreet listening i heard "harvest the fold." Fold can mean group, flock, sheep, churchgoers, etc...also can mean collapse, go out of business, ruined, bankrupt, lose everything, go under. Chris is not trying to say "heroes in stretches", it's "heroes and stretchers". Stretchers are what the lifesavers, emt/ambulances bring to the sight to take away the bodies of the living and the dead. I am a singer and i know that the word "in" and "and" can be indistinguishable in a song. Also, it's blowing to pieces. In a song, "to" very often comes out "ta". proper pronunciation is often deviated from for the sake of opening the throat and creating a different sound or feel. Also, we must factor in the use of slang/dialect. For instance "eeeee" is a very "white" and constricting vowel sound that is strenuous to the vocal chords so it is often replaced with "aaaahhh" which opens the throat, is far easier to project, sounds warmer/smoother. Listen to soul music for an example. I'm a white male who has had to learn this to emulate soul artists in order to survive in the "variety band" cover scene. Lyrics are not always what they sound like. Often the quality of the take on whatever vocal track that comes out the best is what the band and producer deems most important and chooses to leave on the record. Also, the band and producer know that it is not always necessary for the listeners to understand every lyric for the song to become a hit. The best sounding cut is what is most necessary. |
