A classic from the under-appreciated Sir Mix-a-lot. He turns the boasts of rappers around with this great parody.

Pink Floyd – Eclipse Lyrics 3 years ago
The key to understanding this song lies in the final words - "but the sun is eclipsed by the moon." The point of the song is that everything is futile and ultimately doomed. Everything living creature ultimately dies and everything in the universe ultimately comes to nothing. Or, as they say in physics, "Entropy increases."

Rob Base – It takes two (feat. DJ E-Z Rock) Lyrics 6 years ago
@[vice115588:23079] That's because the meaning is obvious. The MC is rhyming about what a great MC he is. Every line is him boasting about his talents.

Literally, the chorus "It takes 2" is simply stating that it takes both Rob Base's rhymes as well as DJ EZ Rock's turntable talent to put together this great show for the people at the club. But metaphorically, it also refers to sex.

Boston – My Destination Lyrics 6 years ago
A virtuoso performance by the Greatest Rock Vocalist of All Time, Brad Delp. I love the words at the end - "It's not where you can be, it's what you can see that takes you there," and Brad sings it magnificently.

Boston – More Than A Feeling Lyrics 7 years ago
@[phantomlaw:18958] I would like to add that I think the ending of More Than a Feeling is one of the most beautifully powerful 45 seconds in the history of rock music. Delp's high note at "she slipped awaaay" is obviously famous, but the build up that follows immediately after with the one extra bar and the double-timing on the drums before hitting that famous riff one last time, with its deep warm sound while giving that extra sustain on the top note of the guitar lead, then just holding that chorus in the background to the end, is completely awesome. Sometimes it gives me goosebumps.

Although "Until the referee rings the bell" could be understood to mean "until life lets up on you," I think more generally it refers to death.

@[barium6262:14340] I'm not sure I can proclaim any song to be greatest ever, but I can identify a small set of songs that I believe are on the very highest rank and would merit serious consideration for that title, were it actually possible to bestow it.

"Where the Streets Have no Name" would definitely be on my short list of the greatest of the greats.

U2 – Pride (In the Name of Love) Lyrics 7 years ago
I think the lyric "Free at last / they took your life / but they could not take your pride." is one of the greatest in rock history.

@[jayschif:14337] i believe the song lyric is "what more" in the name of love, not "one man" as you describe in your analysis.

The same lyrical phrases in the song are inherently ironic and represent contrary positions. "What more in the name of love" refers both to the evil men do while justifying it, and the prices some men have paid in their quest to better humanity.

For instance, both the Loyalists and Republicans in Ireland's struggle for self-determination believe their side is in the right and are willing to die for it. The second verse literally refers to armed conflict. I would consider Ireland's "Troubles" are an example of the kind of conflicts U2 is referring to. In this context, when U2 writes "what more in the name of love," they are criticizing warfare and terrorism and asking how many more people have to die in this needless fashion.

The 3rd verse is obviously about MLKJ. In this context, "what more ..." obviously refers to the price he had to pay as he pursued his just cause.

Queen – Under Pressure Lyrics 8 years ago
The song is obviously about the pressures of life. The question is, "what pressures, specifically?"

I don't think the songwriters meant to specify or limit it to one particular kind. Everyone faces many pressures. There's the pressure of what others in our lives, such as our family and friends, expect us to be. The kind of person they expect us to be. The religious values they expect us to adopt and uphold. The schooling and career choices they expect us to make. The kinds of families we choose (or choose not) to have for ourselves.

There are the financial pressures of trying to pay the bills and provide for our families. This pressure by itself can "put people on streets," either directly through eviction or foreclosure, or indirectly through the destructive ways people sometimes cope with these pressures, such as drug or alcohol abuse.

In the workplace there is pressure to perform at a high level.

The authors encourage us to love our fellow man and help each other through difficult times, but they regret that often we are unwilling to do so, because loving others requires us to give of ourselves in a variety of ways.

What is the "last dance" the authors refer to? I believe it refers to life itself. Each of us only get one. This is our only chance to love others and be the people we are capable of being. And the true nature of our character is revealed in the way that we handle ourselves despite the fact that each of us faces a variety of pressures. It is easy to give of yourself when things are going well and you have an abundance. Our character is revealed by our willingness to give when things are not going well and we are not in abundance.

I'm an old-school classic rock fan, but this song lifts me up every time I hear it. Yes, it's catchy. But that's not why I love it. The lyrics are powerfully inspiring. Sometimes they bring tears to my eyes. The author is right - we really ain't got it bad.

Boston – Don't Look Back Lyrics 8 years ago
I love Boston and this one of my favorite songs. Like most Boston songs, the meaning of the lyrics is straightforward. Be the person you can be, were intended to be, today. Don't be held back by previous successes or failures. Focusing on the past blinds you from the present and impedes your vision of the future.

Boston has affected me profoundly over the years. I can only describe their music as a spiritual rising. The lyrics, Tom's warm guitar tone and Brad's amazing voice have elevated me during the most difficult times in my life.

Tom Scholz is notorious for taking the better part of a decade to record each album. I was born in '74 and the first Boston album I remember coming out was "Third Stage" in 1986. My best friend was the first person I knew who had a CD player and I remember sitting in his room, listening to this album over and over. When I was 14, I could sing along and hit all the high notes in Hollyann! Alas, by the time I got to college, I could not longer impersonate a soprano, but my friends and I spent many an hour in the dorm, listening to Brad's majestic voice on Boston's debut album, desperately trying to keep up with this lyrical virtuoso.

I can honestly say I spent years hoping for the next Boston album just to get another glimpse of Brad's voice. When "Walk On" came out in 1994, I bought it immediately, went straight home to listen to it, and was disappointed when I realized the voice I was hearing was NOT the Voice of Boston. Fran Cosmo, who sang the leads, is a wonderful singer and he sounded great, but Brad was nonpareil.

I waited eight more years and picked up "Corporate America." Unfortunately, Brad only sang lead vocals on three of those songs, and the rest of the songs on the album sound so little like Boston's previous works that you would never guess it was a Boston album if you listened to it for the first time blindfolded. Of course, Brad died about 5 years later so I've given up the dream of another Boston album with his voice. The one true outstanding piece on the album is "I Had a Good Time."

Their latest release, "Life, Love and Hope," hasn't done much for me. Bummer.

@[werumm:4819] "Obscure guitar riff from a faggy '80's band with little to no real artistic relevance?"

Dude, if that's what you honestly think, you are completely mental. This is one of the most famous, most-loved guitar riffs in rock history, played by a guitarist famous for his phenomenal tone, in a song recognized by millions as one of the greatest songs ever written, sung by one of the greatest voices in rock history, on an album recognized by millions more as one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

As far as Nirvana is concerned, Kurt Cobain's voice sounds like shit

Queen – Killer Queen Lyrics 9 years ago
I think you can interpret this song in several ways. Obviously, the high-class prostitute is one interpretation.

I enjoy thinking of it in a little more creative fashion, a la "La Femme Nikita." She's a beautiful, elegant woman who is really a covert governmental operative. The reference to "Kruschev and Kennedy" certainly supports this interpretation, as do the references to various weapons.

Another similar interpretation is that this is simply a dangerous woman to get involved with. She's irresistible but the men who fall for her end up getting hurt emotionally.

Finally, one much looser interpretation is that "she's" a drag queen.

The similarity is obvious. SLTS is the Boston riff, played in a minor key instead of the major key of Boston. Cobain himself acknowledged he took it straight out of Boston.

One of rock's most beautiful, touching ballads. The lyrics are intensely personal and authentic.

Boston is #1 on my list of the greatest bands ever. Tom's guitar tone is amazing and Brad Delp's voice was simply untouchable! It's a combination no other band has matched. I think Boston is underappreciated because of their small volume of work and lengthy delays between albums.

Boston – Foreplay/Long Time Lyrics 11 years ago
This is a fantastic song. The lead guitar at the intro to Longtime is one of rock's all-time great solos.

I want to reply to the commenter who wrote that Tom Scholz made Boston, not Brad Delp. There's no question this is true from the creative and engineering perspectives. However, Delp was truly one of rock's greatest vocalists, and his unique, hauntingly beautiful timbre and outstanding range gave Boston one of the greatest and most distinctive vocal sounds in rock history.

I have always thought both Tom's incredible guitar tone and Brad's amazing voice were what made Boston sound like Boston. Look at the liner notes to Third Stage; Tom thanked Brad for his vocals and wrote that the album would not have been the same without him.
