Iron & Wine – Prison on Route 41 Lyrics 2 years ago
@[Hartyhar:39366] ha, I think you're right! Or maybe "if not for the righteous path Virginia's laid"?

Either way, I do think this is pretty plainly about the church. The visiting on every weekend, the mention of Christ the Lord, the talk of precepts and a creed, etc. Also, like I said, he's got many songs that do similar things.

Iron & Wine – Prison on Route 41 Lyrics 3 years ago
The "prison on rt 41" is the church. He's the only one in his family who isn't imprisoned there, because his savior "is not Christ the Lord," but Virginia, who has lured him away from the faith with her sexy legs and the "precepts of her purity," which he obviously sees as more pure than the church.

This is what Iron and Wine is basically always singing about anyway, cf songs like Sacred Vision, Upward Over the Mountain, Father Mountain, Sodom South Georgia, etc.

Low – Will the Night Lyrics 7 years ago
The melody of this song is incredible. It never repeats, just builds and builds till the heartbreaking word "other," and then resolves.

A mature love song by someone who knows what it's like to be in a relationship for a long time. Will our closeness (the night of passion) last? Or am I on the other side? - the inevitable distance and separation we feel, even from those closest to us.

Low – If You Were Born Today (Song for Little Baby Jesus) Lyrics 7 years ago
A challenging song that undermines our cheap and easy holiday cheer and points to something greater. "We'd kill you by age eight" might not work as theology (our wickedness can't subvert God's plans) but it works perfectly as a subversive artistic sentiment. The redemption of the world through Christ, which we celebrate at Christmastime, is only meaningful when we understand how dark and ugly our world really is. There are times when the peace and joy of Christmas seem like saying "peace, peace" when there is no peace. (This year, 2016, is a great example.)

So the hope of Christ at Christmastime has to come after we admit how fearful, how weak, how ugly and selfish the world has become. It's a difficult song that doesn't offer any hope in and of itself. In the context of the song, all the lovely things that Jesus said - "joy to the world, peace on the earth" etc. - are nixed by our violence, killing him by age eight. But listen to the rest of the album :)

Low – One Special Gift Lyrics 7 years ago
Simple little song that points beyond the consumerism of the season to the "one special guest" in whom we hope.

On one level, you could read this song as a sweet love song, about saving a little money to buy one special gift for your special someone. But in the context of this album it means much more. Think about "Just Like Christmas," and especially the challenging "If You Were Born Today," which both work to subvert our cheap, easy holiday cheer and point beyond it to something greater.

I think the key to this song is the "all the money" in the first line. All the money is gone. Who is this special guest, to whom we can give "one special gift" that doesn't cost any money?

Low – Weight of Water Lyrics 7 years ago
It's about baptism and spiritual renewal, and the cost that it exacts. Mimi and Alan from Low are Mormons, and lots of their music draws on their spiritual convictions.

"Till you're called by your secret name" (also the name of the record) refers to the new identity we are given when we are made new in Christ. "The weight of the water" is the idea that baptism is something you have to carry. It both frees you, and binds you in a new way of living. The weight of the water "has brought me back" to a place of emptiness, waiting to be filled again. "I have no power to ward it" - God's redemption has the power over me, not the other way around.

"How I cower to the weight" - a lovely line - speaks to our fear at being so vulnerable before God. And the song ends with a confession of hope and trust. "Still I'll make this water home."

Dead Meadow – Let It All Pass Lyrics 12 years ago
not sure about the second verse, but i think it should be closer to:

To the higher heights I can't lift it
Don't know??? I get with it
Not since God's son, oh, walked the earth
Not since the virgin birth, for what it's worth

That last line, "Not since..." is good. The second and third are still pretty iffy, though I am fairly sure it's "God's son...walked the earth."

For what it's worth.

J. Tillman – Year in the Kingdom Lyrics 12 years ago
It should be "No more mine to reclaim..." instead of mind...

I know Tillman used to be a Christian and lost his faith somewhere along the line...not sure but it seems these lyrics might be a reference to that, to his "year in the kingdom." Lovely song.
